Published on January 9, 2012, all of us at camp commend Josh for all he has achieved and congratulate him on his healthy new lifestyle. Below is a recap of his transformation and how Greenwoods Camp was an integral part of it: The best six summers of my life were spent at Greenwoods Camp from 1989-94! As much as I loved camp, my peers and the counselors, I had many problems as a kid that led to struggles with my weight. It spiraled out of control to the point where I was 350 pounds in October 2010 and I could barely walk. I knew I had to do something drastic. Through eating Subway and many other nutritious meals, lifting weights, walking, jogging, playing basketball and jumproping, I lost 160 pounds, and now weigh 190 pounds and am living a healthy lifestyle! Ironically, I live in Clarksdale Mississippi, which is in Coahoma County - the most obese county in the nation. People Magazine was looking for stories about what was being done to fight obesity in Mississippi and learned about me. My story was featured in People Magazine in its first issue of this year. Looking back, my experience at camp played a role in my weight loss even though it happened more than 16 years after my last day at Greenwoods. At camp I learned how to be active and stay fit on a daily basis. I applied many things I did at camp to my exercise routine. I used to spend many hours shooting baskets on the court near the archery field on the boy’s side. The gym I work out at now has a basketball court, and I spend much of my time there doing the things I did at camp. Also, when I get discouraged, to this day, I think of those at camp who encouraged me. It reminds me there are good people out there and it inspires me to keep going. The big lesson campers could learn from my experience is to take what you learned at camp and continue to stay active in many of those ways during the school year. Every summer at camp I was very active, gave 100 percent at everything I did, lost a lot of weight, but was always back to my old habits when school started again. Do not do that. Take the activities you enjoyed the most during the summer and try to find a way to partake in them year round. Your body will thank you and you will be more likely to live a long and healthy life! Fashion is best when shared with friends- Just ask Paula Zacharia and Davida Berk, who met in kindergarten in Glenview, Illinois. They named their new Winnetka, Illinois boutique Willow after both their childhood subdivision and elementary school. The meticulously curated shop features an array of accessories at a variety of price points, including handbags by Carla Mancini, Liebskind, Lauren Merkin and Olivia Harris. The jewelry comes from numerous designers, Marcia Moran, Sonya Renee and Lisa Freede along with some local designers like Aviva Rose, Rachael Olesker and Sway. We are so proud of Lake of the Woods Alumni Paula Andrews Zacharia who attended LWC as a camper for three years and always looked forward to Color Days at the end of each session. Paula now sends her own daughters, Jacey and Zoey to Lake of the Woods each summer. In fact, the Zacharia Family has enjoyed several summers at camp together as part of our annual family camp week at the end of each August.

The best part about working with our families is when the entire family gets involved at camp. With the Sheks, not only did we get to meet Alex and Max over their years at Greenwoods, but their father Mitch got in on the fun when he decided to serve as a camp physician in our health center for five years (he even got his plaque). Mitch, a prominent dermatologist in the Detroit area has been a gem in the health center and has seen everything from rashes to dehydration to swimmer’s ear! We are thrilled to know that both Alex (University of Michigan) and Max (Ithaca College) are doing very well and keeping the Greenwoods spirit alive. Below is a family photo from a summer 2011 vacation to Greenough, Montana where the family enjoyed fly fishing, horseback riding and sleeping in tents. Nice camp tee, Max!
