Let’s face it. It’s a long time until next summer. But that doesn’t mean we have to sit and twiddle our thumbs. Straight from the desk of Ronald Springs, we present your guide for surviving until next summer.

How to Survive ‘til Next Summer, part II

Gooooood Morniiiing!

Get a copy of Ron’s “Good Morning” routine and wake up with it every morning.

Camp is right around the corner! You are probably getting excited and even preparing yourself for the summer; thinking about the skills you want to take, what activities you’re hoping to do, who your counselors and cabin mates will be. We hope you’ll also take some time to prepare yourselves for what God may teach you. Our theme this summer is “Fully Known” which comes from 1 Corinthians 13:12. It says, “Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” Throughout the session you will be attending, you will learn about how you are known by God and how we are to know Him, how you are to know yourself and be known by others, and how to make God known. It’s important

to understand that God knows us inside and out. He created us and knows every little detail about us. If we can better understand ourselves and who God created us to be, the better we will come to know God. If our lives have been changed by knowing God, wouldn’t you want that change to be seen by your friends and family around you? Get ready to learn and discuss what it means to be Fully Known and the effect it can have in your relationships around you!

Sock War! Keep several socks filled with sawdust beside your bed. You never know when you’ll be called to battle in a Sock War. You must start training now! We anticipate that this summer’s sock wars will be more brutal than ever. But we have just the thing for you. Here’s an insider tip. There are actually two types of sock-ammo. Long-range and short-range. Know your strengths and weaknesses.

Hide Stuff! Hide things from yourself. Lots of things. So many things that you can’t possibly remember where you put them all. Then, wait a few weeks and see how many you can find. This is perfect training for counselor hunt. Those sneaky counselors don’t ever want to be found. You must train in the art of seek.

Gush Positions!

Practice your gush position. There is always room for improvements. Bend your knees, clap your hands, and gush! Extra points for style. We’ll see who has been practicing.

being Sock War, dodge ball games, and Council Ring. He also said camp has taught him some life lessons that even helped in his NFL career, “I learned about helping each other and people looking out for each other and having great enthusiasm in everything you do”. He said those are lessons that helped him in life. Brad also had some very fond closing memories of camp and how camp has affected his life, “I just think of great memories, and how you meet people from camp who were in a certain cabin you were in and asking what rank they were and what sign they carried”. He talked about how great it was to be a part of Camp Ridgecrest. “It is just great to run into camp people and hearing their camp memories. Camp made a huge impact on my life and a lot of other people’s lives and continues to do so”. We are very lucky to have so many great alumni like Brad Johnson who believe in camp and what we do! So just remember no matter where you are, there may be a Ridgecrest alumni, even in the Super Bowl!

Here’s a list of staff that will be returning this summer. And maybe more on the way!

Did you know Brad Johnson, Super Bowl XXXVII Champion QB, was a camper at Camp Ridgecrest for Boys? Better believe it! Brad Johnson was raised in Black Mountain, NC and went to high school at Owen High School in Black Mountain. He was an excellent football and basketball player for the Owen Warhorses. He then moved on to play Quarterback for the Florida State University Seminoles in college. He was drafted in the NFL by the Minnesota Vikings in 1992. Brad played 17 seasons in the NFL, 9 with the Vikings, 4 with the Buccaneers, 2 with the Redskins, and 2 with the Cowboys. What he may be most known for is the season he led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Super Bowl Championship with a victory over the Oakland Raiders. Brad had a great career, where he said some of his favorite moments were his “First touchdown pass that lead to beating the Detroit Lions, coming from behind, and my dad had just had heart surgery a few months prior to the game”. He continued, “having my dad witness that and tossing the game ball to him afterwards was a great memory”. Another of his favorite memories was, “winning the Super Bowl and then doing the ‘we are going to Disney’ commercial with my wife and son Max”. These days Brad lives with his wife and two sons, Max, 9, and Jake, 7, in Athens, GA. He fills his time coaching a varsity basketball team and volunteering time in the local youth athletic scene, and enjoying “ a lot of ping pong and racquetball”, he joked. Brad was a camper for 3 years starting in Cabin 1 where his counselor was our very own Ron Springs. Brad said Ron “taught me everything I know”, but I think we all know the truth about that statement. Since his dad, Rick, was the Director at the time, Brad spent more years around camp, around 8 he said. He talked about some of his favorite memories of camp
