Intermediate Level Waste: Resins, filters, reactor core components

Highly radioactive and long lived (100,000 years)

Low level radioactive waste: Clothes, rags and other industrial items

OPG Planned Deep Geologic Repository (DGR)

Reasons to be Concerned

• OPG only considered one site 1 km from the Great Lakes

• Lack of public consultation

• Toxicity/longevity of nuclear waste

• All 3 DGR’s on planet have leaked

• Kincardine DGR sets precedent for high level nuclear waste DGR in Great Lakes Basin

First Nations Speak Out

Vernon Roote

Saugeen Ojibway Nation Chief

“If something were to happen with the disposal or the leakage of nuclear waste

I wouldn't want to be drinking the water downstream," said Roote. "That means

the balance of Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and also anyone drinking

from those lakes, even into the U.S.A."

Clinton Phillips

Mohawk Chief

“While the Bruce Power plant is hundreds of kilometers from Kahnawà:ke, any

potential nuclear contamination problem could nonetheless affect not only us

but the 40 million-plus people who use the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River for

drinking water.

“On this basis, we have an obligation to remain vigilant and to support our

brothers and sisters at Saugeen,” he concluded. “There needs to be a much

better and safer plan for the disposal or storage of this dangerous material.”

Homer A. Mandoka

President, United Tribes of Michigan

“The United Tribes of Michigan stands firmly opposed to the

construction of a nuclear waste storage facility at the Bruce

Nuclear Power Plant site in Ontario, or any other site

situated in the drainage basin for the Great Lakes.”
