ENTRANCE ANTIPHON
O people of Sion, behold, the Lord will come to save the nations, and the Lord will make the glory of his voice heard in the joy of your heart.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
Response: Lord make us turn to you, let us see your face
and we shall be saved.
I will hear what the Lord God has to say, a voice that speaks of peace, peace for his people. His help is near for those who fear him and his glory will dwell in our land. R
Mercy and faithfulness have met; justice and peace have embraced. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth and justice look down from heaven. R
The Lord will make us prosper and our earth shall yield its fruit. Justice shall march before him and peace shall follow his steps. R
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia!
Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all people shall see the salvation of God.
Alleluia!
PARISH PRAYER
Lord God, may we, as St Augustine’s Parish, be a united and welcoming community recognising the need for Christ in our lives and serving the Christ in others. May we, as community, continue to face challenges together serving and supporting individuals and our families through our own personal efforts and our parish support groups. Guide us with your patient love. Fill us with your infinite Wisdom. Pour out your rich blessings upon us as we reach out to one another to fulfil our spiritual and pastoral needs as One in Christ, in community, and in faith, hope and love. AMEN.

ST AUGUSTINE’S PARISH VISION STATEMENT St Augustine’s Parish is a community striving to be Christ to one another and to welcome and serve the Christ in those around us. We
seek ongoing spiritual formation as individuals, as families and as a community. We hope, through pastoral care, to strengthen, support and enrich one another and reach out to others in witness and evangelisation.

PREPARE A WAY - John the Baptist is an interesting character. He wasn’t someone who kept up with the latest fashion. We are told he wore strange clothes, ate insects and lived in the desert. And yet John was very popular as we hear that ‘all of Judea’ came to him. There was obviously something very attractive about John. People could see something in him; something that inspired them; something that gave them hope. John is clear that he is not the one they are looking for; rather he is someone who is pointing to the one they are looking for. John shows the way for people, he is a signpost to God.
The world says to God, ‘we no longer need you, we know what is best’. And then we look at the wilderness of our modern world and hear the voice of one crying, ‘Prepare a way’. How do we prepare for welcoming God’s love into our hearts? God is crying out for us to welcome him again and again. It is us who are blocked; we put so many things in the way. John is urging us to clear the path, to let go of all the things that are preventing us from experiencing God’s love. John is calling people out from despair into hopefulness.

Two hydrogen atoms walk into a bar. One says, “I’ve lost my electron.” The other says, “Are you sure?” The first replies, “Yes, I’m positive …”
A man takes his Rottweiler to the vet and says, “My dog’s cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?” “Well,” says the vet, “let’s have a look at him.” So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then checks his teeth. Finally, he says “I’m going to have to put him down.” “What? Because he’s cross-eyed?” “No, because he’s heavy.”

Medical science has advanced rapidly in the past two decades with wonderful achievements improving the quality of life for many people, especially for an ageing population. In some instances it leaves doctors and family members with a dilemma as to how much intervention is appropriate. This past week my brother-in-law had an operation on his heart which was more complicated than expected and he was alive but not living, surrounded by countless machines in an attempt to repair damage. As there was little progress, family members after hours of discussion took the decision to remove the ‘extraordinary means’ of intervention and commend him to his Creator. What would you want? This is a subject you need to discuss and your wishes need to be made clear to family members.
Envelopes for Sacrificial Planned Giving are available this weekend. I am extremely grateful to those parishioners who contribute to our SPG and give generously to the running of the parish. At the same time I am conscious of the increasing costs and the smaller number of contributors. Are you in a position to contribute more this year, or perhaps you are not in the SPG and could become a member? The answer is between you and God.
There have been significant additional costs associated with the development of the Dutton Street townhouses. Approval was given just this past week for another $150,000 for rock removal, fire hydrant and new fences.
Scholarship for the poor in Timor Leste would be a wonderful Christmas gift, see the message below from Leylann Hinch and Tim Matthews.
YASS/GUNNING BELUN OECUSSI SCHOLARSHIPS PROGRAM
Members of our parish family are invited to support the Oecusse
Scholarships program as part of the Yass Gunning Belun.
Scholarships are at all levels of education and costs are available,
no donation is too small. You could help Domimgas and Quella
who have recently commenced nursing studies. They have moved
to West Timor to attend Kupang University at a cost of $2500 each
year for study and living expenses. Domimgas and Quella will
return to Oecusse to staff the medical clinics which Yass Gunning
Belun have constructed. Jumito has commenced Engineering
studies at Dili University at a cost of $600 per year. Sergio and
Vladermiro are in secondary school in Dili at a cost of $300 per
year. At the Dominican convent in Pante Makassar, there are more
than 60 girls from the mountains of Oecusse who need support
throughout their primary school education. Education is a first
world expectation and an essential step towards lifting people out
of poverty. Please contact Tim Matthews at Gunning or Leylann
Hinch at Yass if you want to be a part of the program. Direct
deposits can be made to the following account.

COMMUNION REFLECTION
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT – YR B
The voice of John the Baptist was a lonely voice
which many contemporaries ignored.
There are many lonely voices in our world.
Somewhere, at this moment, a child is crying -
crying for love or maybe, simply, for bread.
Somewhere a young person is crying -
crying for a listening ear or an understanding heart.
Somewhere an old person is crying -
crying for a visit or a word from his/her children.
There are a thousand unheard voices in our world,
coming from victims of injustice and neglect.
Lord, help us to listen to these voices.
Above all, help us to listen to your voice,
whispering to us in the wilderness of our hearts,
telling us that we are loved by you,
and that we are to love one another.
Our Parish Bulletin is made possible each week by our generous sponsors please support them.
