MirFazeli,MD,PhD(c)Dr.FazeliisaphysicianandaPhDcandidateintheExperimentalMedicineProgramintheDepartmentofPediatrics,UBC.Heistrainedasaclinicalepidemiologistandhismainfieldofexpertiseincludesresearchmethodologyandclinicaltrialswithafocusonmeasuringtheactivityoftheautonomicnervoussystem,systematicreviewandmeta-analysisofrandomizedcontrolledtrials,andimplementationandevaluationofcomplementaryandalternativemedicineinterventions.TeachingAssistant:HéctorA.VelásquezGarcía,MDMSMPHDr.ValasquezGarciaisaprimarycarephysician(UniversidaddelRosario,Bogotá,Colombia),withtraininginMedicalInformatics(MS,UniversityofCalifornia,Davis)andPublicHealth(MPH,EpidemiologyandBiostatistics,JohnsHopkinsBloombergSchoolofPublicHealth).HeiscurrentlyaPhDCandidateatSPPH;thefocusofhisresearchiscancerepidemiologyandcausalinferenceinobservationalstudies.InstructionFormatStudentswillbeintroducedtosystematicreviewmethodsviaavarietyoftopicsrelatedtoeachcomponentofasystematicreview,forexample,questionformulation,theprocessofdevelopingasearchstrategy,applicationofstudyinclusionandexclusioncriteria,dataextraction,assessmentofriskofbias,andmeta-analysisofstudyresults.Oncestudentshavecompletedthiscoursetheywillhavesufficientknowledgetoparticipateinasystematicreview.Studentswilllearntousethefollowingsystematicreviewsoftware:ReviewManager(RevMan)(meta-analysisandriskofbias),GRADEpro/GDT(summaryoffindingstables)andCovidence(studyscreening).Courseassignmentsincludebothindividualandgroupworkandwillbuildtowardsteamdevelopmentofadraftsystematicreviewprotocolandapartialsystematicreview.Feedbackoneachassignmentaimstocontributetodevelopmentofsubsequentcomponentsofthedraftreview.Thecourseisorganizedinto13weekly,3-hoursessions.Inaddition,thecourseinstructorswillbeavailabletomeetinformallywiththestudentstoaddressquestionsanddiscusstheirresearchtopicandreviewprotocols.Thisincludesoptionallabtimefrom8:30amto9ampriortotheclass(search-relatedQ’s),and12:00pmto12:30pm(anyQ’s)aftereachclass.Additionalofficetime,meetingsandtutorialsareavailableonappointment.ScopeofthisCourseThefocusofthiscourseissystematicreviewsinvolvingclinicalandpolicyquestionsthatareaddressedprimarilythroughrandomizedcontrolledtrials(RCTs).Systematicreviewsofobservationalstudieswillalsobecoveredinthecourse.StudentsareencouragedtocarryoutareviewthatincludesRCTevidenceinordertobuildanexperiencebasebeforeaddressingmorecomplexdesignsbutmayincludeotherquantitativestudydesignsifappropriatetotheirtopic.Interventionsusingqualitativemethodsarebrieflydiscussedbutthecourseisnotdesignedtoprovidein-depthdetailonsystematicreviewsofqualitativeormixedmethodsstudies.

Eachyear,thecoursealsocoverstwoorthreespecialtopicsorinnovations.Thesetopicsmaychangefromyear-to-yearorsubsequentlybeincorporatedintothecorecurriculum.PrerequisitesStudentsshouldhavebasicunderstandingofhealthresearchdesign/methodologyandanintroductoryunderstandingofmedicalstatistics.TherearenocourserequisitesforstudentsenrolledinSPPHmaster’sandPhDprograms.Studentsinothergraduateprogramsmayenrollwithpermissionfromtheinstructor.ResearchTopicStudentswillselectaninitialresearchquestionappropriatetoasystematicreview.Thesequestionswillbeusedasabasisforthedevelopmentof‘reviewteams’oftwotothreestudents,whowillworktogethertocarryouteachstageofadraftsystematicreview.Eachmemberofareviewteamwillhaveprimaryauthorshipandresponsibilityforasectionofthereview,butallteammembersareexpectedtoprovidesubstantivecontributionstotheentirereview.AssignmentsCourseassignmentswillcomprisethedifferentstagesofareview:1)developmentofaresearchquestionandscopingsearch;2)developmentofaliteraturesearchstrategy;3)developmentofasystematicreviewprotocolincludingplansformeta-analysis;and4)a3-studydraftreviewwithcriticalappraisal.Studentswillalsopresentabriefsummaryoftheirtopicinaclasspresentation.FullassignmentdetailsandguidancewillbepostedinCanvasduringtheterm.StudentEvaluationStudentswillreceiveindividualgradesonparticipationandonthesectionofAssignment#4onaspecificclinicalstudy.Therestoftheassignmentswillbecarriedoutasresearchteams,withasinglegradeforallmembersofateam.
