Many years ago, I was pastor of achurch in Aberdeen. Our wider familylived a long distance away and visitingthem was rather like embarking on anexpedition. Each time we’d start ourjourney, we wouldn’t even get outsidethe city before our little daughter wouldask “Are we nearly there yet?” For yearsI’ve struggled with the same sense ofimpatience whenever I’ve had a longjourney to make. I’ve been impatient toreach my destination and looked on thetime spent in travelling as wasted time.My sister and her husband visited us forthe first time in Inverness recently. I wasastonished that, instead of flying, theychose a nine hour journey by train. Butwhen I met them at the station andasked how the journey had been, theysaid how much they’d enjoyed it. Thescenery had been stunning, the trainhad been comfortable and – mostimportant of all - the train had run ontime and they had made their connec-tions!Life itself is like taking a journey. Weneed to make adequate preparations for

life’s journey. That means investingpersonal time and energy to train anddevelop our abilities for our chosencareer. It means having objectives andknowing what we want to do with ourlives – being clear about our destination! And, of course, it means preparing forour long-term future through savingsand putting aside for our pension. Butwe shouldn’t forget that there arespiritual preparations we also need tomake. Jesus told the story of the manwho made careful plans to increase hiswealth by building larger barns. Hisreasoning was “Then I’ll have roomenough to store all my wheat and othergoods. And I’ll sit back and say tomyself, “My friend, you have enoughstored away for years to come. Nowtake it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’What he failed to factor in to his prepa-rations for this life was the need toprepare adequately for the life to come.“But God said to him, ‘You fool! You willdie this very night. Then who will geteverything you worked for?’ “Yes, aperson is a fool to store up earthly

wealth but not have a rich relationshipwith God.” Our journey is not just for thislife but for the next, and heaven needs tobe our ultimate destination. To preparewell for that journey, we need to get toknow Jesus as our Saviour and throughHim enter into “a rich relationship withGod”. But we should also remember that Godwants us to enjoy the journey, not just toendure it. Michael Card, the Christiansinger songwriter, produced an album Ihave which is called “Joy in theJourney”. And as we journey through lifewith Jesus, His love, companionship andsupport bring tremendous joy into ourlives. If you get to know Jesus, you canexperience something of this joy as wellas knowing you’re on your way to yourultimate destination and the experienceof life as God originally intended it to be.As Paul said in Rom.13:11 “our salvationis nearer now than when we firstbelieved”.

Part 1The Provost announced that Mrs SGraham, Council Officer would be retiringin January and thanked her, on behalf of theCity Committee, for her 37 years ofdedicated and loyal service to the Counciland in particular to the City. Mrs Grahamwas then presented with a bouquet offlowers and gift as a token of thanks andrecognition from the Members of theInverness City Committee.A bouquet of flowers was also presented toMiss M MacLeod, who was leaving her postas Business Support Officer in CEX Office,Town House, for a new position at the endof the year.Mr M Macleod, Head of Planning andBuilding Standards outlined the key areasdetailed within the draft City Centre Devel-opment Brief and invited the Committee tocomment on its contents, which would helpinform the report to the Planning, Environ-ment and Development Committee (PED)recommending approval of the Brief.Members thanked Mr Macleod for his pres-entation and commented as follows: thiswas a very important document whichwould help to create a vision for Invernessfor generations to come; the quality of theenvironment was essential to a City and theprovision of cycle ways, greenspaces andlinks to public transport would help towardsremoving motorised vehicles from the CityCentre. As the Inverness Common Good Fund wasa major property owner in the City Centre, the Inverness City Committee must play astrategic role in the development of the CityVision and the Development Briefs theInverness Common Good Fund should becontinually reviewed to look at ways ofinvesting in and underwriting the purchaseof properties to principally benefit thecitizens of Inverness; Farraline Park andStation Square were prime sites for creatingcivic spaces for the City. The formation of a cross party WorkingGroup drawn from the City Committeewould help produce a structured andmeasured response to the Brief; there weremany empty buildings in the city whichprovided opportunities for developmentthrough being renovated internally whilstretaining facades; the impact of the currentreview of the Councils office accommoda-tion and the economic impact of businessesrelocating out of the city centre were signif-icant factors when considering newproperty investments for the CommonGood Fund; there was a need for an indoorfacility for tourists and the Castle would be

a prime location for this purpose; an inte-grated approach to the needs of locals andtourists was required. It was important thatInverness be viewed as a City for youngpeople. Transport connectivity between theEast and West of the City was a significantproblem and needed to be addressed, withparticular attention to the needs of youngpeople. The left (West) bank of the RiverNess must benefit from the DevelopmentBrief as the River and areas adjacent wereessential to the development of the City. The Council must ensure that the Develop-ment Brief did not react to the short termfinancial pressures but think in the longterm. The Victorian Market was an underutilisedresource for the City as a tourist destina-tion. Bridge Street, the Castle and CastleStreet form an important hub in the CityCentre that needed to be developed fortourism purposes. The vision must allow forflexibility and change as ideas change.Retail development in the City would provechallenging because of the increase in pop-ularity of internet shopping. Depopulation inthe City Centre was a major problem andprivate landowners must be encouraged toprovide affordable housing - quality ofdesign MUST be of the highest priority. TheCouncil should be looking to the possibilityof using developer’s contributions toPlanning Gain made in respect of con-struction outside the city, in the City Centre.Academy Street must be a high priorityarea for development and improvements tostreetscape. The plan must look at ways ofretaining public conveniences in the city, some buildings were in a poor state ofrepair. Renovation and improvements tofacades would immediately help the ap-pearance of the city e.g. the VictorianMarket entrance on Academy Street. Therewas a need to find suitable alternative ac-commodation for the Courts and Prisonwhich were no longer fit for purpose, prefer-ably by co-locating them on a new site.Student accommodation in the City wouldprovide a fresh vibrancy to the centre. The current Bus Station was not fit forpurpose and a more appropriate locationshould be found possibly at the site of thepresent Morrisons Supermarket Car Park. The old BT Telephone Exchange, HuntlyHouse and 1/5 Church Street offered de-velopment opportunities.Inverness was a City and not a Town andopportunities to attract European fundingmust be taken. In response to some of the Members’comments, the City Manager confirmed

that: there had to be a strategic balancebetween Inverness Common Good Fund(CGF) investment and community benefitbut that it had to make the best use of op-portunities to move assets around. Themain aim of the CGF was to produce anincome. After the draft Brief had been approved bythe PED Committee, the City Committeewould still have an opportunity to contributeto the Brief. It was not the right time to setup Member engagement. Mr Haas and MrMacLeod were to work up a recommenda-tion for a Stakeholder Group to be formed, including representatives from theCommunity and Members. This would bepresented to the City Committee at the nextmeeting subject to the PED Committeeapproving the draft Brief.A report on Coach Parking would bebrought to the Committee in the New Year. The Academy Street entrance of theVictorian Market would be looked at as partof the current renovations but the stone wasvery porous and sensitive to abrasionmaking cleaning difficult. A report on thepotential for development involving theCastle Wynd Toilet Block and the adjacentarea would be made to the next CityCommittee set for 13th February 2012. ThePlanning and Development Service haddecanted from 1/3 Church Street becausethe office space was sub standard and a re-furbishment programme was being workedup for consideration by the City Committee. The need for a new Art Gallery andMuseum must be recognised and a clearimplementation plan with immediate actionsneeded to form part of the Brief.

Mr Macleod further commented that: allMembers’ comments would help to informthe report to PED Committee. Somefunding for Academy Street Streetscapework had been earmarked from thePlanning and Development CapitalProgramme fund and work was underway, involving Mr Haas, to ensure that otheravailable budgets could have the opportu-nity to contribute. Both sides of the river hadbeen included in the Brief. The Council wasworking with the Prison Service to find analternative site and, as part of the consul-tation, process events would be held incentral locations at appropriate times toengage with as many confirmed that a com-prehensive and updated list would bereported back to the next City Committeemeeting, with particular reference to 1-3Church Street.

They generally contract once or twice a second, but just by standing on it, the vibrations cause an automatic reflex muscle contraction of 30-50 a second.Just 10 minutes on the Vibrational Plate will have the same results as 60 minutes of conventional strenuous training.

This type of workout has actually been compared to doing about 3,000

leg bends, which of course would be impossible with a traditional workout. This means that not only does vibration plate training work, but it’s the best kind of workout that you can get! Many people who are excessively overweight have also said that it’s a great start to getting in shape because you don’t need to be extremely fit already to do it effectively.Training sessions are undertaken in a private room with a trainer, or alone, after your 3rd session – so no need to feel embarrassed about coming along!

Initial session £15, all following sessions £5.For bookings or further information call:

“ ”There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,

but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14;12

“I've Got My Own Religion”

Published by www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish Charity SCO41290

These are sayings which you will hear from many people today:

“I’ve got my own religion”“Whatever you believe is alright.”“Everybody has their own beliefs.”

“Just so long as you believe something.”

They sound nice, and help to make people feel good, since their own beliefs are said to be as valid as those of anyone else. "After all," some say, "can you really know anything for sure?" People who claim to have "the truth" are looked down upon as being arrogant and intolerant. For some reason, people can accept the idea that any religion is valid as long as it doesn't claim to be the only true religion!Do you know why that is? It's Satan's way of getting people to believe anything but the one thing that will remove his grip on their souls.

It is not true that all religious beliefs are of equal value. It is not true that "Whatever you believe is alright." The very fact that "Everybody has their own beliefs" is what God says is man's biggest problem--we have exchanged His truth for our beliefs. "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). Man's confused religions stand in opposition to God's simple way to everlasting life. Man's ways are the wide, tolerant, sin-ignoring way that ends in destruc-tion. "Broad is the way that leadeth to destruction ... narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that nd it" (Matthew 7:13,14).

There is one sense in which it is true that what you believe doesn't matter. What you believe, or what religious men have taught, does not change the

truth of God's Word! Just believing something doesn't make it so. Jumping o the top of a high building onto the street below will kill you, no matter how strongly you believe otherwise. Entering into eternity when you die with the rm belief that there is no God, or that your beliefs or your works are good enough to merit His approval will not change the outcome: "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of re" (Revelation 20:15).

There is no hope for you outside of Christ and your accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour –We have all oended a Holy God and are under sentence of eternal punishment – but there is a way of escape! Just as the Jews had to put their hand on the head of the burnt oering, as atonement for their sin, so we have to lay our hand on His head (as it were) and personally accept His blood as making atonement for us.

Truth is not a matter of opinion. Either something is true or it is false. Jesus Christ claims to be the truth. He did not say "I am a way," but rather, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6). When it comes to faith, it is not, "Just so long as you believe something," but "Just so long as you believe Christ." Faith in Jesus Christ, who laid down His life on the cross of Calvary and rose victoriously from the dead, is the only way to everlasting life, forgive-ness of sins and peace with God.

Just as everyone has turned to his own way, each of us must individually turn from our rebellion. No one can save himself, since salvation is "not of works" (Ephesians 2:8,9). Because God is the One who saves, salvation is as certain as His promise: "He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).

The Lord Jesus Christ is the only way. Stop rejecting Him, and by faith receive Him as your Saviour. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

DO YOU SEE IT ? Have repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. You have to receive Him for yourself; no-one can do it for you. In Him is abundant life; there is no other way for you.

As a MP and a Minister, you get accustomed tobeing interrogated by very capable and tough in-terviewers. Whether the questions come from theopposition benches or from infamous Paxman-typereporters, many interviewers pride themselves on

‘pulling no punches’. The trick is to do your research and knowthe subject matter inside out.It will come as no surprise to some that students from KingussieHigh put me through my paces in a robust question and answersession during my recent visit to the school. They had clearlydone their research! In a little over an hour I answered questions in depth on topicssuch as: education and opportunities for young people; mycampaigns to improve broadband coverage in the Highlandsand keep fuel duty low; Scottish independence; and my roles asan MP and as a Minister. It was a delight to talk to the thoughtful teenagers. I was veryencouraged buy their mature questioning and their honesty. Ifthere is one distinction between hard hitting politicos and thepupils of Kingussie, it is that they had no agenda to push. Theirquestions were probing and sincere.

“News that Castle Stuart has beenchosen as the venue for the Barclays ScottishOpen has cheered us all up, in these times ofgloom and austerity. From the 7th to the 11th July, the “spotlight” will be on the Moray Firth, Inverness.

The benefits to the area will be considerable. The gold courseGeneral Manager, Stuart McColm, has said that we need toattract 20,000 visitors a day to be sure of keeping the event, asthe Loch Lomond Club, which has hosted the event since 1996attracted between seventy to eighty five thousand – so put it inyour diary now! This will be a major attraction to bring visitorsnorth – and a boost for hotels, B&B’s and guest houses. Perhapsin Scotland, we tend to undersell our own manifold tourist at-tractions – so the potential to use the tourism trade to bolster ourjobs, livelihoods and futures may not be realised. We can bebackward at coming forward, and may not see Scotland asothers see us. This was brought home to me when a B and Bowner from Newtonmore told me that she had holidayed in theNile in January, and asked me how many visit ors I thought therewere in ships on the Nile, on any one day. She told me theanswer: one million! With our scenery, whisky, tartan, Gaelic, history, culture, heritage, beaches, mountains, lochs as well asgolf, fishing, sailing and countless other reasons to come toScotland, we could, should and will see more people fromcountries throughout the world coming for a stay here”.

Sam’s Indian Cuisine has

something for everyone.

I visited the restaurant recently

with my wife and teenage son

and it is clear that it provides an

excellent venue for small

groups, families and those

looking for a more intimate night

out with excellent food. With a

seating capacity of around 70,

it enjoys a fairly central location,

just off Academy Street, and is

definitely worth seeking out

amongst the other local

eateries. Trust me, you won’t

be disappointed!

We were greeted instantly by

the restaurant’s owner, Sam

Miah who has been in the

business for many years and it

shows. His attention to detail is

faultless and all his staff are

attentive – especially Stephen

who does a great job as ‘front

of house’. We kicked off the

night with Papadums accompa-

nied by the chutney and pickle

tray. Delicious and just what

you need to whet your appetite

whilst you flick through the

menu! And what a menu it is –

anyone looking at this cannot

fail to be impressed with the

selection of food on offer. As for

cost, the prices are extremely

reasonable making it an

affordable night out for

everyone. With so much choice

on offer we were happy for Sam

to recommend some dishes

for us.

For appetizers, we had Sam’s

Special (non veg) Platter

consisting of mixed pakora,

samosa and chicken kebab.

We also had The King Prawn

Butterflys which were utterly

delicious as was the stuffed

pepper filled with mixed

vegetables.

Next came the main meals

which Sam chose from his

‘speciality’ menu, and they

were indeed ‘special’. We had

‘Sholey’ which was chicken

cooked with onions, peppers

and tomatoes and topped

with coriander seeds and a

ginger sauce which was

flamed with sambuca – an

impressive sight, but not as

impressive as the taste! The

flavours were simply amazing.

If you haven’t tried ‘Sali Bolti’

then you need to. This consists

of tender lamb cooked in

onions, tomatoes and spices

topped with crispy straw

potatoes which I felt was an

unusual twist that worked

wonderfully. If you like

something a bit more spicy

then the Bengal Chicken is for

you – this is breast of chicken

stuffed with king prawns which

is then grilled and cooked in a

medium to hot sauce.

However, if your palate is a bit

more delicate then Chicken

Chasni provides a delicious but

mild alternative. The chicken is

cooked in a sweet and sour

creamy sauce with mango – my

son loved this. All of these dishes

were served with Pilau rice and we

had both the Peshwari and Kulcha

Nan – so light and freshly cooked

to perfection.

If all that wasn’t enough, we

managed to find some space for

dessert – we had a selection of

delicious sticky toffee pudding -

the old favourite served with ice

cream and cream, together with

the Cappa Cioccolato which simply

melted in your mouth.

All in all, we found this a most

enjoyable experience. The

excellence of the food against the

backdrop of a friendly, relaxing and

modern restaurant provided just the

right ‘ingredients’ for a really great

night out. We couldn’t recommend

‘Sam’s Indian Cuisine’ highly enough,

but go on, why not try it for yourself?

MarchThe Highland Tiger

Arguably our most enigmatic species, the Scottish Wildcat is the only surviving native feline in the UK. With just 400 believed to remain in the wild, the Wildcat is rarer than the Bengal tiger. After suffering centuries of habitat loss, being hunted for their fur and shot as vermin, they now face threats from vehicle collisions, disease and probably most significantly, interbreeding with domestic cats. This dilutes the gene pool and has disastrous consequences for the species.

The most significant surviving population is to be found in the Cairngorms, with smaller numbers in Lochaber and Aberdeenshire. Their preferred habitat is moorland and the margins of forests and mountain slopes, where their main prey is rabbits, hares and other small mammals. Like their domestic cousins, they are opportunistic feeders and will take anything of a suitable size.

Wildcats mate in the depths of winter with the kittens born in April or May, with a litter of between 2-4 the norm. The mother brings live prey to the den, often an abandoned badger sett or fox earth, from around 3 weeks old, allowing the kittens to develop their hunting skills. They will start to follow mum around from about 10 weeks old and will remain with her until around 5 months. The male takes no part in the rearing of the youngsters. Wildcats can breed from 1 year old, though males are unlikely to do so until they have established their own territory.

As wildcats are very similar in appearance to the domestic tabby it is difficult for the casual observer to make a positive identification but probably the most significant markers are the blunt tail with it's distinct rings, and stripes on their flanks and hindquarters that are mainly unbroken. Wildcats are also larger than the domestic tabby, with the average male coming in at over 5 kg and the female nearly 4 kg.

For the best chance to see them in the wild, go to an area they are known to inhabit, use a car as a hide and look for them around dawn or dusk – they are nocturnal creatures. For the not so patient, the Highland Wildlife park in Kingussie have captive animals.

If you'd like to find out more about the Scottish wildcat, report a sighting or help with the conservation of the species, have a look at www.highlandtiger.com. SNH also have a lot of useful information at www.snh.gov.uk.

EVERY BODY IS BETTER WITH BOWEN

What is Bowen I hear you ask and why does every body need it?It is a very gentle form of natural healing and to really appreciate it's depth and subtlety it needs to be experienced. This gentleness means it is an ideal therapy to use on people of all ages – from newborns to the elderly.

The Bowen Technique embodies a truly holistic approach to health care. It does not just address specific conditions and symptoms but encourages a healing response in the body by carefully stimulating the body's own innate ability to heal.

http://www.bowen-technique.co.uk/

Success will vary from person to person – the therapist will address the person as a whole, not just the condition, as one of the effects of a session is the feeling of well-being that it induces.

For many people, stress is a constant factor and long term it can lead to havoc within the immune system, digestion, sleep patterns and nervous system and by having a Bowen session the nervous system appears to slow down and a beneficial effect is felt in the whole being.

Dreamingof...

India is a diverse land of stunning contrasts and has become a very popular holiday destination over the years. In this dynamic and diverse country it is not surprising to find numerous rich glories of the past, varied traditions and values, and various interesting cultures. The bustling cities, rare wildlife, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, tranquil backwaters, barren deserts standing in contrast with rolling foothills, and innumerable ancient monuments - all this makes India a fascinating travel destination.

Northern India is famed for its sights and the monuments of the Golden Triangle, which include the Taj Mahal at Agra, The Pink City of Jaipur, the scenery of Tiger country, the splendours of Rajasthan and the rush of Mumbai and Delhi. The Capital of India is Delhi, which itself is a contrast of old Delhi, hectic and fast-paced with higgledy-piggledy streets thronged with millions of people with motorbikes and tuk tuks, and New Delhi neatly designed with floral parks, wide avenues and regal monuments. Tiger country comprises 4 national parks spread across hundreds of miles encompassing jungle vegetation and an abundance of wildlife.

Southern India is famed for Goa and Kerala in particular. Goa is distinct from the rest of India with its relaxing beach holidays and its tropical climate, scenery and paradise beaches. Away from the developed resort visitors discover remnants of Portuguese colonialism with medieval churches, mosques and temples to admire. Kerala has palm-fringed sandy beaches, lush green vegetation and still backwaters. It is big for growing tea and coffee, the plantations growing up from the sea.

In the very north of the country is the border with Nepal. Nepal sits uncomfortably between India and China, and a visit there brings together the greatness of the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains with the poorness of the people who live there.

October to March is the best time to visit the Northern states. December & January can experience light to heavy fog in the northern plains. October to April is the best time to visit the southern states. A valid visa is required to enter India. The flying time for Delhi is 8hrs, Mumbai (Bombay) is 9hrs and Calcutta is 10hrs from London.
