We always like to be positive here

at SpotLight. You won’t find horror

stories and tales of woe within

these pages. We feel that there is

plenty enough of that on the TV

and in the papers. So our aim here

is to be supportive and encourag-

ing to local people to get involved

with local activities and to play a

part in your community. By

engaging with our neighbours this

is how we find a real

place in society, not by

pulling others down.

Decisions!Decisions are something we all have tomake, whether we are keen to makesome or reluctant to do so.

Some decisions are easy; should I buythis car or that car; whether to go to thisrestaurant or that one.

But some decisions we avoid like theplague. Sometimes we fool ourselvesinto thinking that we don’t have to makea decision; that we should stick with thestatus quo.

So, what decision or decisions are youputting off, or not even thinking about?Have you ever made a decisionregarding eternal life? Have you everthought that your decision will affectyour eternal destination?

In Joshua 24:15 it says,”And if it is evil inyour eyes to serve the LORD, choosethis day whom you will serve, whetherthe gods your fathers served in the

region beyond the River, or the gods ofthe Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we willserve the LORD.”

It is all about choice, or making adecision, either to serve God, or to donothing. What we decide to do willdetermine our course in life, either it is toGod or away from Him.

I have lost count of how many peoplethat say that they have no concept ofGod, and because of that, they don’tbelieve He exists. Most Christians werein that place until they took the step offaith to ask Jesus to come into theirlives, and repenting (turning away) fromthe sin on their lives.

Once that decision is made, a journeyin God begins, where there was anempty feeling inside, it is filled with thetangible presence of our Creator God,who so desires a relationship with eachand every one of us.

And even if life is good, we still have toface our individual eternity.

Matthew 16:26 says, “For what will itprofit a man if he gains the whole worldand forfeits his soul? Or what shall aman give in return for his soul?”

It is a bonus if we live a good life here onearth, although not everybody does, butwhat choice are we making to ensurethat we spend eternity in God’spresence or an eternity without God’spresence?

Having been on both sides of the fence,I know which one I have settled for.As it says in a Christian song, “I havedecided to follow Jesus, no turningback……”

Make the right choice today, choose thelife that God intends.

I had occasion recently to have a muscle injury

treated by a physiotherapist while working in

Edinburgh. In the obligatory small talk I was

asked where I lived, on saying Elgin the physio -

who lived in the Berwick area - informed me that

he was visiting Elgin that very weekend.

The weekend arrived and I had taken my older son down to

Boroughbriggs to watch the Elgin City game, only to spot my

physiotherapist playing on the right wing in defence for visiting

Berwick Rangers!

After being spotted by the physio in the enclosure and Elgin

giving Berwick a pretty sore 4-0 beating I am now a little

worried about visiting the physio again for fear of retri-

bution!

It’s Six Nations time again! Having enjoyedplaying rugby in my youth it continues to bemy favourite sport and, as usual, I’ve done mybest to try and work around the various SixNations games and, as usual, with variedsuccess at keeping the two hour slots free in

the diary.I think one of the reasons I like the game so much is thatthere is space in a rugby time for people to contribute re-gardless of whether they are tall, short, big or small, makingit a pretty inclusive game compared to other team sports.

It’s also good to see two teams who can walk off the pitch

at the end and leave any rivalry behind, stay polite with the

officials and after all of it get some food and a drink and a

laugh together at the end. A great example for youngsters

and in Moray we have some excellent rugby coaching to get

the best from the sporting talent coming through our

schools. With all that effort going in I am very hopeful of

Scotland producing better and better teams at the highest

levels of competition.

Fly the flag for Morayevent

The Moray Gig would like to promote Moray to a wide audience during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend in June. The gig, Bien Trouvé, is representing the county by participating in the Queen’s Pageant on the Thames on Sunday 3rd June with a crew of 8 youngsters and 6 adults. They

will have to row at 4 knots for over 2 hours ahead of the Queen’s Barge under the many central London bridges of the processional course in full view of the public and the world’s press. Looking well presented and smart, rowing as a crew and flying a Moray Standard in the bows the gig will undoubtedly draw attention

Bien Trouvé (transl: Well Founded) is a replica of a French design from the type of boat that would have carried the ship’s captain to and from his man o’war. Based in Findhorn this charity offers a challenge for all in a controlled environment by handling, sailing and rowing a fast traditional gig www.moraygig.com, www.thamesdiamondjubilee pageant.org It is intended to produce a booklet about Moray and what goes on in the county for wide distribution. There will be space for advertising, good luck

messages and promotion in this booklet. If you can assist then please contact Gary Hunt 01309 690410 for further information.

“ ”There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,

but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14;12

“I've Got My Own Religion”

Published by www.wordsbythewayside.co.uk Registered Scottish Charity SCO41290

These are sayings which you will hear from many people today:

“I’ve got my own religion”“Whatever you believe is alright.”“Everybody has their own beliefs.”

“Just so long as you believe something.”

They sound nice, and help to make people feel good, since their own beliefs are said to be as valid as those of anyone else. "After all," some say, "can you really know anything for sure?" People who claim to have "the truth" are looked down upon as being arrogant and intolerant. For some reason, people can accept the idea that any religion is valid as long as it doesn't claim to be the only true religion!Do you know why that is? It's Satan's way of getting people to believe anything but the one thing that will remove his grip on their souls.

It is not true that all religious beliefs are of equal value. It is not true that "Whatever you believe is alright." The very fact that "Everybody has their own beliefs" is what God says is man's biggest problem--we have exchanged His truth for our beliefs. "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). Man's confused religions stand in opposition to God's simple way to everlasting life. Man's ways are the wide, tolerant, sin-ignoring way that ends in destruc-tion. "Broad is the way that leadeth to destruction ... narrow is the way that leadeth unto life, and few there be that nd it" (Matthew 7:13,14).

There is one sense in which it is true that what you believe doesn't matter. What you believe, or what religious men have taught, does not change the

truth of God's Word! Just believing something doesn't make it so. Jumping o the top of a high building onto the street below will kill you, no matter how strongly you believe otherwise. Entering into eternity when you die with the rm belief that there is no God, or that your beliefs or your works are good enough to merit His approval will not change the outcome: "Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of re" (Revelation 20:15).

There is no hope for you outside of Christ and your accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour –We have all oended a Holy God and are under sentence of eternal punishment – but there is a way of escape! Just as the Jews had to put their hand on the head of the burnt oering, as atonement for their sin, so we have to lay our hand on His head (as it were) and personally accept His blood as making atonement for us.

Truth is not a matter of opinion. Either something is true or it is false. Jesus Christ claims to be the truth. He did not say "I am a way," but rather, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me" (John 14:6). When it comes to faith, it is not, "Just so long as you believe something," but "Just so long as you believe Christ." Faith in Jesus Christ, who laid down His life on the cross of Calvary and rose victoriously from the dead, is the only way to everlasting life, forgive-ness of sins and peace with God.

Just as everyone has turned to his own way, each of us must individually turn from our rebellion. No one can save himself, since salvation is "not of works" (Ephesians 2:8,9). Because God is the One who saves, salvation is as certain as His promise: "He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation, but is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).

The Lord Jesus Christ is the only way. Stop rejecting Him, and by faith receive Him as your Saviour. "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

DO YOU SEE IT ? Have repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. You have to receive Him for yourself; no-one can do it for you. In Him is abundant life; there is no other way for you.

Swiss Onion TartBefore buying the Knockomie in 1987, Gavin spent time living in Zurich in Switzerland as part of his training and this tart is typical of a Spring dish served in the mountains for lunch or supper. By omitting the bacon it is a great vegetarian dish too!

Pastry250g Plain Flour1 egg125g Soft Butterapproximately 4 dessertspoons cold water

Pre heat the oven to 220ºC

Method1. Place the flour in a large clean bowl or onto a clean work surface, make a well and place the egg and soft butter in the centre and gradually bring together all the ingredients by rubbing betweenyour fingers.

2. As they all come together add the water gradually to bind it and form it into a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge.

3. To make the filling, place the butter into a frying pan over a medium heat to melt.

4. Add all the sliced onions to the pan, and cook gently to soften, carefully making sure that they don't burn.

5. When softened remove from the pan and place on a plate to cool slightly.

6. Add oil to the frying pan. Slice the bacon into thin strips and cook in the pan until golden and crisp. Remove from the pan and place on kitchen paper to drain.

7. Place the eggs into a bowl and whisk with a hand whisk. Add the cream and a pinch of salt and pepper. Finally add the grated cheese and sliced onions.

8. Take the pastry out of the fridge and roll out on a clean, floured surface. Carefully line a greased 23cm flan case with a removeable bottom. Trim off any excess.

9. Take the cheese, onion, cream and egg mixture and pour into the pastry case. Lay the bacon on the top.

10. Place on a baking tray on the bottom shelf of the oven. Cook for 30 – 40 mins until golden brown.

This can be served simply with lambs leaf lettuce or any salad leaves and a dijon mustard dressing.

Filling50g Butter600g thinly sliced onions150g smoked back bacon4 eggs300ml Double cream1 tablespoon Olive Oil100g Gruyere Cheese GratedSalt and Pepper

It is estimated that there could be as many as 100,000 Young Carers in Scotland

The last week in March see’s the start of the busiest season for birders. Many of the winter visitors are still present and beginning to show signs of their breeding plumage and many of our resident species are in full song and trying to attract a mate or proclaim their territory.

However, much as the above are great things to witness in themselves, nearly all observers will be scanning the skies for the first arrival of our summer migrants.

One of the first to arrive are the Sand Martins, look for these small brown and white relatives of the Swallow as they hawk over beaches and sand dunes re-stocking their body fat supplies and also looking for suitable sandy banks in which to set up home.

At the same time the handsome Wheatear appears, usually first spotted in its typical upright pose as it perches on fence posts or areas of short grass, watch out for a flash of

brilliant white just above the tail, another sure way to identify this species.

As you walk along the beach towards the very end of the month listen out for loud harsh “kerrrick” calls of Sandwich Terns, a real sound and sight of summer, a large lanky tern with a striking shaggy crest and long black bill tipped with yellow. Surprisingly although it is one of the first to arrive, it is usually one of the last to leave.

Thinking of heading out to try and see these birds? Then head for places like Kingston, Findhorn Dunes, Burghead or Merkinch but wherever you go enjoy the longer evenings, warmer weather and the prospect of long hot summer days!

Next month we continue on the migrant theme and look forward to the arrival of one of our most iconic birds (and my emblem for “Birding Ecosse”) the Osprey.

So until next month Good birding!

Information kindly supplied by Birding Ecosse, offering Birdwatching for beginners workshops.

leisureThe Big Splash 2012

During the Olympic year of 2012 swimming is being

highlighted through a major advertising campaign

branded as "The Big Splash". The campaign is aimed

at all levels and ages and brings to the attention of

people the range of sessions and activities at local

swimming pools.

Across Moray at our five pools we offer something for

everyone whether it be a very young child attending

a class with a parent through to adult lessons or for

the more energetic you can join one of the local

swimming clubs.

Swimming is a fantastic all-round exercise and

because it is dynamic it improves muscle tone,

strengthens the cardiovascular system and just as

importantly no matter how gentle your swim is the

social and well-being benefits are great.

The "Big Splash" really does show pools to their full

potential - why not check out our timetables and

activities at www.moray.gov.uk and see for yourself

Dreamingof...

India is a diverse land of stunning contrasts and has become a very popular holiday destination over the years. In this dynamic and diverse country it is not surprising to find numerous rich glories of the past, varied traditions and values, and various interesting cultures. The bustling cities, rare wildlife, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, tranquil backwaters, barren deserts standing in contrast with rolling foothills, and innumerable ancient monuments - all this makes India a fascinating travel destination.

Northern India is famed for its sights and the monuments of the Golden Triangle, which include the Taj Mahal at Agra, The Pink City of Jaipur, the scenery of Tiger country, the splendours of Rajasthan and the rush of Mumbai and Delhi. The Capital of India is Delhi, which itself is a contrast of old Delhi, hectic and fast-paced with higgledy-piggledy streets thronged with millions of people with motorbikes and tuk tuks, and New Delhi neatly designed with floral parks, wide avenues and regal monuments. Tiger country comprises 4 national parks spread across hundreds of miles encompassing jungle vegetation and an abundance of wildlife.

Southern India is famed for Goa and Kerala in particular. Goa is distinct from the rest of India with its relaxing beach holidays and its tropical climate, scenery and paradise beaches. Away from the developed resort visitors discover remnants of Portuguese colonialism with medieval churches, mosques and temples to admire. Kerala has palm-fringed sandy beaches, lush green vegetation and still backwaters. It is big for growing tea and coffee, the plantations growing up from the sea.

In the very north of the country is the border with Nepal. Nepal sits uncomfortably between India and China, and a visit there brings together the greatness of the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains with the poorness of the people who live there.

October to March is the best time to visit the Northern states. December & January can experience light to heavy fog in the northern plains. October to April is the best time to visit the southern states. A valid visa is required to enter India. The flying time for Delhi is 8hrs, Mumbai (Bombay) is 9hrs and Calcutta is 10hrs from London.
