In today’s professionalism of football, how can players still be getting it so wrong with

off-field issues?

With all the education they receive, it is hard to believe that we continue to hear of the use of banned substances, unauthorised betting and even physical abuse.

Even after the past two years of news articles on Essendon players agreeing to be injected with unsubstantiated supplements on the advice of club officials, Fremantle’s Ryan Crowley is now testing positive to a drug banned under the AFL’s anti-drug policy after the use of a non-prescribed painkiller.

Crowley has been through the system long enough to know what he should have done, such as some kind of club discussion on what he could have taken.

However, his career is now in jeopardy, with premature retirement most likely for the

Dockers’ pesky tagger.

Many of the league’s best players would welcome seeing the back of him but he’ll now be remembered for being a ‘drug cheat’.

It shouldn’t have got to this.

Then later in the week we hear of Western Bulldog rising star Lachlan Hunter, along with a VFL player, being alleged of betting on one of their own club’s games.

Despite being a young player, naivety cannot be used as a defence because, once again, of all the education presented at club level.

The excuse that the AFL is reflective of society is rubbish. Few other sections of society receive the training and education AFL players receive about all these issues – mistakes are more unforgivable than ever.

The club is trying to play it down, but even with the AFL having to investigate these

types of activities shows that the message isn’t getting through.

This case sounds ingenuous enough though, where the VFL player may have simply used Hunter’s online account to place a bet. But it shows the days of lame excuses are gone.

These incidents show how easily it is to make a simple error in judgement, but the results can prove to be extremely costly.

It is time that the players take the responsibility on themselves to ensure further issues do not arise.

It is just a plain lack of thought beforehand and they should know better.

These players are supposed to be professional footballers.

The public don’t want to see these types of stories fill the pages of our papers either as it used to be, and still is, in the domain of the NRL.

A new season is about to start so let’s have the game take all the headlines from now on.

Stop the excuses!

For the first time in Head of the River history the one school in Scotch College has taken out both the boys and girls eights at the annual rowing regatta.

The boys finished ahead of Prince Alfred and Saint Peters colleges, while the girls beat Walford and Pembroke schools.

The new equipment must have worked a treat for the boys, who hadn’t won their event for 20 years.

The 2015 Sydney International Rowing Regatta is on this weekend as well, featuring the Australian Open Rowing Championships where the King’s and Queen’s Cups will be decided. South Australia is looking good to bring home some strong results.

The fall from grace of former West Coast champion Ben Cousins is sad to watch.

Cousins’ demise since leaving the game has been ongoing and disappointing to see, continuing to find himself in uncompromising positions.

Many have reached out to assist the troubled star, but it has all been to no avail.

This week the one-time Brownlow medallist has been back in police custody facing further health assessment.

Let’s hope he gets the help required to get back on the straight and narrow.

Adelaide Crows may have gained the early bragging rights with success at the weekend, but the real stuff is still a week away. One thing revealed from the pre-season Showdown was that we will have two highly competitive clubs in this state in 2015.The NAB Challenge has also shown:• Phil Walsh’s endearment to players’ family

is a key trait that will see him succeed – he consoled the fortunes of the Crouch family this week after Brad suffered another fracture that will see him out of the Crows’ side for the opening weeks of the season

• There is some fight in the old and new Dogs, but can they transfer it to the season proper and a whole year?

• Bucks may have to watch his back as the knives come out, if the Pies continue to struggle

• Mitch Clark looms as a serious presence alongside Tom Hawkins at the Cats

• St Kilda’s 106-point defeat at the hands of reigning premier Hawthorn, albeit in a trial game, is concerning for the club’s season ahead

• The Saints cannot afford to lose senior players and Leigh Montagna will already miss the start of the season with a knee injury. Maybe he was cursed by his encounter with a presumed snake before last week’s game, which was later found to be a ladies snakeskin sandal that required a snake catcher’s assistance and a costly $180 call-out fee

• Close the damn roof at Etihad Stadium – the AFL’s experiment to have it half closed last weekend caused more problems than with it open so just close it

• Loving the way we have hardly seen or heard from the Scott brothers – softly, softly, the quiet approach is a good plan

• Please commentators stop saying Juddy’s back better than ever. He’s 31 years-old and still can’t kick more than 40m

Footy footnotes

Each year certain players are under more pressure than others to keep contracts for future seasons.

It is usually those who have been on their club’s list for several seasons and haven’t been able to find a settled place in their side or been given a chance yet.

There are definitely a few at both the Power and the Crows who will feel added weight on their shoulders to perform or they could find themselves out the door.

Assessing Port Adelaide’s list, there would be no player under more pressure this year than forward John Butcher.

He has always shown glimpses of his skills, but he has been unable to display them consistent to make himself a regular in the side.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2011, kicking 11 goals in four games including six from just six kicks in a match against the Western Bulldogs, Butcher has become erratic with his goal-kicking, blemishing his ability to get the ball through his strong marking capabilities.

He has started 2015 well and was a shining light in the Power’s loss to crosstown rival Adelaide last weekend.

Now is his time to cement a place in the side or the so-called “Future” of the club will not have one.

Adelaide Crow Cam Ellis-Yolmen appears ready to step up following another impressive pre-season. Photo: AAP

Pressure’s on

Kane Mitchell is another who has been in and out of the Port line-up.

Coming off the rookie list in 2013 Mitchell was well recognisable with his flashy pace and flowing ponytail.

However, he has never been able to secure a spot. More often than not he was the side’s

substitute before being dropped back to the SANFL when key players returned from injury.

Butcher’s the type of player who simply fills gaps when presented, but his foot skills have prevented him from being a permanent fixture in the side.

He will have to step up this year or younger players will be given a chance to surpass him.

A couple of those youngsters on the cusp of selection in recent years have been Karl Amon (drafted in 2013) and Brandon Ah Chee (drafted in 2011).

Despite being close on several occasions, named emergencies a few times, neither have played their first game for the club in the regular season.

They need to grab their chance now to ensure they remain on the list as the club gets closer to success.

At the Crows there are several players in the same boat.

Cam Ellis-Yolmen will be one feeling the pinch.

Often showing the goods during the

pre-season, he is yet to really present with only one minor round appearance.

Under new coach Phil Walsh the 22 year-old looks like he may have come of age, again showing he is ready to become a dynamic ball-winner in the middle in early trial form.

With the absence of Scott Thompson and Brad Crouch, Ellis-Yolmen may get his opportunity in Adelaide’s round one side against North Melbourne next week. But he must take it from the outset.

Midfielder/forward Jarryd Lyons also has struggled.

He has shown that he has something to persevere with, but has been out of favour with past coaches to receive regular call ups.

Lyons has proven to be damaging around goal, but usually has been pushed aside for a better skilled player around the ground.

This year looms as his last chance to succeed at the top level.

Forward/ruckman Josh Jenkins is an enigma.

He has all the skills to take a game apart, but just doesn’t do it often enough.

Fans are regularly puzzled by his inconsistent output.

It’s as if he doesn’t believe in himself, as he should.

However, in a Crows’ forward line with the talent of captain Taylor Walker, Eddie Betts and Tom Lynch with others champing at the bit to fill spots, Jenkins needs to become a strong presence in attack and be a valuable contributor.

At the same time, as a ruckman, youngster Rory O’Brien could be elevated quickly so the pressure’s on all-round.

Only a flag will satisfy Sydney this year as the Swans seek to expunge the nightmarish memories of their 2014

grand final capitulation to Hawthorn.

Of course the notoriously low-key Swans are unlikely to make a public declaration along those lines, but few will doubt the fire of intent that burns within the breast of each player associated with that awful day last September.

“If you don’t show up on the day ready to play, then you’re going to get beaten by anyone and I think we’ve learnt a lot from that,” Swans’ 2014 best and fairest and midfield dynamo Luke Parker said.

“We know how we’ve got to go about it to get back there and give ourselves another opportunity.

They say honesty is the best policy.

Still, nothing could quite prepare Brisbane captain Tom Rockliff when

prized recruit Mitch Robinson described the Lions as “walkovers”.

Robinson revealed that he was asked what his former AFL club Carlton thought of the Lions when he joined his new team’s pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast.

And it’s fair to say the response did not quite agree with the passionate Rockliff.

“At the Noosa camp we spoke about how we (Carlton) perceived Brisbane and it was like coming up here, trying to get the win and come home,” Robinson said.

“We felt it was a bit of a walkover team.

“We will try to change that now, have a game structure, be a hard aggressive team.”

“The boys are really driving this year and willing to do everything it takes to get back there.”

On paper, the 2014 minor premier is well placed to compete for a third flag and fifth grand final appearance in 11 seasons.

Sydney has retained one of the most powerful lists in the competition, with plenty of proven performers across all lines.

The only major loss from their 2014 grand final team was All-Australian half-back Nick Malceski.

Coach John Longmire has no shortage of potential replacements, among them Jarrad McVeigh, who won All-Australian selection in 2013 playing in the back six.

Longmire said other options included

Robinson admitted the home truth did not go down well with Rockliff at the team meeting.

“Tom Rockliff stood up straight away and said, well I can’t say the word,” he said.

“But it hit home a bit and you could see the passion in the boys.

“I think that spurred on the pre-season a little bit.”

A revitalised Brisbane was unbeaten in the pre-season NAB Challenge, backing up two wins with a hard-fought last round draw with rivals Gold Coast.

Robinson this year chimes into a classy Lions midfield that also features fellow new recruits Dayne Beams and Allen Christensen.

Yet the jury is out on who will kick the goals as Brisbane begins life without retired

speedsters Gary Rohan, Lewis Jetta and Harry Cunningham, plus Jeremy Laidler, who along with back-up ruckman Tom Derickx, last year added to Sydney’s long list of valuable recruits from interstate over the past two and a half decades.

Always a prominent player in the trade market, Sydney couldn’t participate last year, but Longmire believes he can squeeze more out of the talent that was already on the roster.

“The players we’ve got on our list, I’m confident with our younger kids coming on,” Longmire said.

“We would expect those to keep improving.”

The likes of Lloyd, Cunningham, Tom Mitchell, Zak Jones, Brandon Jack, Dean Towers and emerging ruckmen Toby Nankervis and Sam Naismith will ensure the Swans have plenty of youth to supplement and push their more experienced colleagues.

Highly-rated Swans Academy prospect Isaac Heeney has impressed in the pre-season and could be the next young gun to break into the senior side.

forward Jonathan Brown.

However, Robinson said Carlton’s small forwards may have provided a sign of things to come from the Lions this season.

“There are a few guys there who have proven they can play the small forward role,” he said.

“Josh Green led last year with 33 (majors).

“We’ve got a bit of pressure on Michael Close and (Daniel) McStay and those blokes coming through – but they are young so it will take a few more years for them to settle in.

“But it has been proven before you don’t need big forwards to kick goals and still win games – we know what we have to do.”

SANFL team PREVIEWsBY CHRIS KENDALLMore in-depth SANFL discussion FROM CHRIS KENDALL can be found at www.sanfl.com.au this season.

part TWOSOUTH ADELAIDE

INS: Ben Darrou (Richmond), Ben Haren (Port Magpies), Scott Dixon (Geelong Falcons), Mitch Farmer (East Ringwood), Adam Flagg (Lavington)

OUTS: Tom Fields (Carlton), Keegan Brooksby (Gold Coast), Caleb Daniel (Western Bulldogs), Darcy Hourigan (Hahndorf), Cam DeVisser (Ironbank), John McDonald (Bridgewater), Todd McKay (Meningie), Josh Thewlis (retired)

On paper, the outs look to outweigh the ins from the 2014 preliminary finalist, but, realistically, the losses of Brooksby and Daniel were long anticipated. It is the departure of Fields that will really throw out the Panthers defensive structure, with his raking left foot hard to replace on the rebound. Thewlis’ leadership will also be a major loss but the selection of co-captains Nick Murphy and Brad Crabb should prove astute choices.

The inclusions will add depth, but the real pressure test will be on those who have been at the club for three to four seasons without consistently consolidating a senior spot. The midfield of Nick Liddle, Joel Cross and Xavier Gotch remains top echelon, but there is also more tall support needed for Brett Eddy in attack to spread the load. Replicating last year’s position may be tough, but finals look well within reach.2015 PREDICTION: Fourth

WEST AdelaideINS: Jason Porplyzia (Adelaide), Brad Helbig (returns – Richmond)

Ryan Willits (returns – Montmorency), Corey Solly (Port Magpies), Errin Wasley-Black (NT Thunder), Joe Cua (Red Cliffs), Ben Klemke (Wodonga), Matt Schreck (Dalyston), Nick Westhoff (returns)

OUTS: Sam Durdin (North Melbourne), Michael Still, Ben Macreadie (Victoria), Scott Bricknell, Kurt Thompson (Blackwood), Ryan Anderson (work), Drew Gallard (overseas), Tom Carter

Steady turnover at Milner Road, with a number of dependable but injury prone performers departing, while some solid AFL experience returns. Macreadie and Bricknell were reliable ball carriers and Still very good in front of goal, but all had difficulty stringing games together in the last couple of seasons. At his best Porplyzia can be devastating and add leadership. But he really needs to string games together, while Helbig should add grunt. Willits will be one of the best additions, with his height and mobility adding plenty to a team that struggled in the air last year.

The big question mark over West remains goal-kicking options and pure pace. At times, it struggled for winning scores last year and the season-ending injury to Andrew Hayes further weakens its key-position stocks. Will cause its share of upsets, but looks short of the top echelon.2015 PREDICTION: Eighth

Woodville/West TorrensINS: Nick Hayes (returns – Brisbane), Luke Thompson (returns –

Adelaide), Fraser Thurlow (Essendon), Aseri Raikiwasa (Port Magpies), Jared Petrenko (returns - Adelaide, but is currently a top-up player for Essendon)

OUTS: Luke Powell, Chris Kane (retired), Adam Grocke (Onkaparinga Valley), Scott Blesing, Travis Lane, Todd Culley, Sam Heinjus, Tasman Fitzgerald, Jack Muirhead.

Careful recruiting for the Eagles, with two returning from AFL stints and the underused Thurlow aiming to add to coach Michael Godden’s big man stocks. Raikiwasa will be an asset in an undersized defence, but the biggest loss will be the leadership of Powell after a fine career in the green, gold and blue. The majority of the other departures had never found a regular league spot, so the promotion of a number of Under-18 players to the senior squads should leave plenty of hunger for spots.

The Eagles looked to be almost limping to the line last year, so a focus on a more gradual fitness development looks the key for them to go deeper into September this year. Grocke’s loss leaves them a little vulnerable for marking power at the top of the 50, but given their taller options, it hands opportunities for crumbers to work around the arc. Should see finals again, but how much of a rise remains to be seen.2015 PREDICTION: Fifth

SturtINS: Jackson Allen (Gold Coast), James Battersby (returns –

Adelaide), Will Paynter (returns – Adelaide reserves), Mark Evans (Norwood), Angus Bruggemann (Port Magpies), Lee Staple (W/WT via Bordertown), Richard O’Grady (Glenelg via North Gambier), Ben Dougall (resumes SANFL after SACA contract)

OUTS: Dean Gore, Tom Read (Geelong), James Rose (Sydney), Mitch Curnow (North Adelaide), Richard Tambling (Northern Territory), Ben Kane, James McLeay, Luke Panozzo, Tom Hurley, John Hinge (all retired)

The 2014 first semi-final thrashing at the hands of South has burnt deep at Unley in the off-season as the Double Blues outfit felt it could have gone deeper into September. Losing a number of senior players will be tough, but it’s fair to say the best was behind many of them. Tambling’s clearance work is hard to replicate, but Battersby will benefit from a year on an AFL list and could step into that breach.

Staple’s recruitment should not be underestimated either, as his movement at the top of the 50 will clear space for the likes of Matthew Duldig and the underrated Evans to work in. Bruggemann’s surprise crossing from the Magpies will give much-needed support in ruck for Angus Kurtze. Pure pace still looks a slight issue, but there is no doubting the class around the park. Looks well placed to rise on last year.2015 PREDICTION: Third

A delaide United is still within reach of top spot despite last week’s 2-all draw with fierce

rival Melbourne Victory.

The Reds can regroup for a trip to Newcastle to face the Jets at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle will be buoyed by its 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers last week that lifted it off the bottom of the A-League ladder. But it would also be mindful of the 7-0 drubbing it received from Adelaide United the last time they met at Coopers Stadium in January.

Reds defender Dylan McGowan, who scored his first goal for the side in last week’s draw, was

disappointed the side could not hold on with 15 minutes to play against the Victory to claim the full three points, but believes they are ready to focus their attention on their next encounter.

McGowan has been a vital inclusion to Adelaide’s defence this season. Although it got caught out last week, he still declared it’s one of the best defensive units in the league, which will prove a key factor in the chase for top spot.

He said the side was right in contention to fight for the Premiers Plate by winning its last five matches.

“I think there will be a lot of twists and turns for the rest of the

season.” McGowan said.

“We have two games coming up now that if we hopefully win, will put us right back in the mix for top spot.

“As long as you win as many games as you can, you’ll be right in with a chance of the premiership.”

The first of those games is against the Jets on Sunday.

E verton manager Roberto Martinez hopes his side can use its 2-1 victory

over Queens Park Rangers as a springboard for a strong end to the campaign.

The Blues were made to work for the crucial win, but it has significantly reduced the lingering relegation fears for the Liverpool natives.

It was back-to-back league wins for the visiting team, giving them a nine-point gap over the bottom three with eight matches remaining.

“The desire and application we showed gives me more satisfaction than any other

victory,” Martinez said.

“Now we have to make sure this performance is an incredible platform for the rest of the reason. We need to climb the table as high as we can.”

QPR boss Chris Ramsey vowed to keep fighting to ensure the club beats the drop.

“Fortunately for us the other clubs around us haven’t won and it keeps us within touching distance,” he said.

“We can get out of it, other teams have done that in the past.”

Hull, Aston Villa and Sunderland are the clubs that are still not clear from possible relegation.

Everton finds springboardThe Tigers and Villa are just three points ahead of 18th-placed Burnley on 25 points, while the Black Cats are only two points ahead.

Queens Park Rangers and Leicester languish at the bottom of the English Premier League ladder in 19th and 20th on 22 and 19 points respectively.

At the other end of the ladder, Chelsea maestro Jose Mourinho is confident the Blues are on course to claim their fourth Premier League title.

Chelsea is six points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table.

“The title race should be over, in

normal conditions Chelsea should have eight, 10 or 12 more points than we have but football is unpredictable,” Mourinho said.

“At this moment we have a six-point lead with one match in hand, which could help us or not. I’m pretty confident, I believe in my players, I believe we can do it but I know it’s difficult.”

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini insists though that Chelsea is not a “winning machine” and says his side can still claim the Premier League title.

“I’m sure from now until the end of the season every team will drop points…and we’ll see what happens with Chelsea.”

weekend full of confidence knowing we need to keep them out to get three points,” he said.

“We are definitely not happy by conceding two goals on Saturday, but I think we will correct that on the training track this week and hopefully get it right against Newcastle next weekend”.

oming off the Ford-favoured Albert Park track, Prodrive Racing Australia teammates Mark Winterbottom and

Chaz Mostert are hoping it’s not the same story at the usually Red Bull-dominant Symmons Plains this weekend.

The Pepsi Max entries of Winterbottom and Mostert cleaned up in the non-championship event at the Australian Grand Prix two weeks ago, taking one-two results in qualifying and all four races.

However, they had a mixed round in Adelaide, where Mostert was fast but crash-prone, and Winterbottom struggled with understeer for

Despite its slow start to the 2015 championships, Red Bull still believes that it can have an impact on the season,

beginning with a turnaround in fortunes in this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix.

Chief Engineer Paul Monaghan is hoping for similar improvement as last year when the team lifted from its testing output to perform well at the 2014 season opener in Australia.

This year though the two Red Bull cars struggled around the Albert Park circuit.

Daniel Ricciardo was lapped to finish sixth and

much of the weekend.

Winterbottom, who led Mostert to the chequered flag in all four Albert Park races, believes that the team has the basic package to compete at every meeting, regardless of circuit layout.

“If we go there (Symmons Plains) and get beat then we haven’t done a good enough job,” Winterbottom said.

“We’ve proven that we have a good car but on the day we just have to get it right.

Red Bull enjoyed a comparable level of domination at Tasmanian track last year where

Daniil Kvyat forced out on his way to the grid.

Monaghan is taking heart from the team’s remarkable gains in the part of last season.

“Last year the progress we made from the third test to the first race was significant and one of our strengths is our development rate,” he said.

“We have the best team in place to repeat our success and we are working as hard as we can to improve as much as possible ahead of Malaysia.”

Ricciardo, who was the only non-Mercedes driver to triumph last year, said there were obvious areas in which Red Bull could make progress.

Holden drivers Jamie Whincup and Craig Lowndes combined to win all three races.

The team is wary of its opposition’s improvements, but quietly confident in the ongoing strength of its own package on circuits like Symmons Plains.

“The Prodrive boys had a really good set-up at Albert Park, which is a credit to them because they maintained the pace throughout the weekend,” said Lowndes.

“But we won’t know how good they are until we get to Tassie and a couple of other tracks to see if they keep that form going.

“Our cars were obviously very good there last year and we fully believe they will be again this year.”

“I’m feeling good going to the next race,” he said.

“I know we have a lot of things to improve on and I’m optimistic that we can achieve some of those in Malaysia, which will give us some more performance.

“The season has started and I think if anyone had any first race jitters they’re gone and I think Malaysia should run a lot smoother for everyone.”

Meanwhile, McLaren driver Fernando Alonso is set to return to racing at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, pending clearance from governing body FIA.

Alonso missed the Australian race after suffering concussion in a testing crash in Spain back in February.

Grant Elliott will have to miss an important family occasion this week, but he’s sure to be forgiven after

producing one of the great moments in New Zealand cricket history.

The Black Cap’s six off the penultimate ball of a pulsating, seesawing encounter against South Africa at Eden Park carried New Zealand to a four-wicket win and a place in the World Cup final.

The team flew out of Auckland on Wednesday bound for Melbourne, where it will meet either defending champion India or tournament co-hosts Australia for the title on Sunday (result not known at the time of

where to from here for cricket in South Australia?

The downward spiral of cricket in this state just continues with another cellar dweller finish for the Redbacks in the Sheffield Shield, leading to the demise of Darren Berry’s coaching tenure.

There is much hype around the return of favoured son Jason Gillespie to be our saviour, but it cannot be left solely in his hands either. And would he want to do it?

Gillespie has been doing really well at the helm of English county side Yorkshire, masterminding a championship victory for the first time in 13 years for the club.

It is understood he has agreed to terms to coach the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League, with the blessing of his county side. But taking on the South Australia jobs in all forms is still to be determined.

Gillespie is understood currently to not be

“My sister has a wedding on Friday and unfortunately I’ll miss her wedding,” Elliott said.

“Can you put it in the press that I’m sorry? I saw her earlier. She was pretty happy for me. I’m going to have to give her a special gift.”

Elliott’s lofted shot over long-on off pace Dale Steyn meant New Zealand will appear in a final for the first time after its seventh appearance in a semi-final.

South Africa, which came into the tournament having to bear the “chokers” tag because of past cup failures, stumbled at the penultimate stage for the fourth time.

interested in taking on the full-time role with the Redbacks, happy to remain with Yorkshire.

He has even been touted as a possible coach of England too.

The ‘global search’ is on to find the future coach of the South Australian Shield side. That will be with the assistance of former Test star Adam Gillespie, Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Team Performance Pat Howard and former AFL coach David Parkin alongside SACA chief executive Keith Bradshaw and high performance manager Tim Nielsen.

Berry and the SACA came to an amicable agreement to be relieved of his duties on Monday after four years trying to lift the Redbacks back to a successful cricketing state, but to no avail.

The closest they got was the 2013/14 season when they faded badly over the last three

But Elliott read little into the Proteas’ latest demise other than it was “just a game of cricket”.

“There are things that happen, small moments in the game,” he said.

“You can’t look at the result all the time. You can’t be too result driven. There are a lot of processes that go towards it.”

Born in Johannesburg, the 36-year-old Elliott shifted to New Zealand in 2001.

He didn’t see any great irony that he had played a major part in putting out the country of his birth.

“When I emigrated to New Zealand, I wanted to become a New Zealander,” he said.

“I’ve made New Zealand my home and it’s great to repay the hospitality every one has shown me.

“I’m pretty stoked to have got New Zealand to the final with the shot at the end.”

games when just one outright win would have seen them rise to the Shield final.

South Australia won a one-day trophy under Berry’s tutelage during the 2011/12 as well as winning the 2010/11 Big Bash competition.

Where are the Chappells, Favells, Phillps, Hoggs, Sleeps, Parkinsons, Cunninghams – the characters of grade cricket coming through to carry the state’s colours with pride?

It all seems very Gen Y, with their ‘who cares’ attitude chasing the money – it’s not all about the IPL.

This is a crucial decision to be made, but more change at the top is not the only thing needed for success to be achieved.

Everyone needs to be committed to the goal as the future of cricket in South Australia depends on it.

Saturday as he looked to get him back into winning form over more suitable distances following two unplaced Melbourne essays over 1800m and 2000m.

“It was by far the best he has worked since entering my stable,” Lees said on Tuesday.

“He could go into the Sydney Cup without another run, but it might not be the most suitable preparation without a further lead-up over more ground.

“The horse is doing well and I feel the 2400m of The BMW will top him off the Cup.

“I’ve got until acceptance time in the morning to make a final decision, but it’s more than likely he will run with Craig Williams his rider.”

Protectionist has 58kg topweight for the Sydney Cup – only 1.5kg more than he carried

HORSE RACINGI s last year’s Melbourne Cup winner

Protectionist just a one hit wonder?

He is yet to show the form that produced a stirring Cup’s victory, albeit over distances not usually to his liking.

It makes this week’s run in the Group One BMW Stakes (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens a crucial gauge to his future chances in Australia, as he moves towards the Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick on 11 April.

Trainer Kris Lees was pondering with the idea of not running the import again before the Sydney Cup but now feels it will be preferable to start him in the BMW this weekend.

Lees was buoyed by Protectionist’s Broadmeadow course proper gallop last

when romping away with the Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington last November.

The Australian Bloodstock ownership of the five year-old may have to reconsider its options if he doesn’t come up this week, with even a possibility of returning the Monsun horse to former German trainer Andreas Wohler to just run in preferable UK races for less prizemoney.

Lees is also likely to back up Ranvet Stakes placegetter Lucia Valentina in The BMW with Jim Cassidy replacing the suspended Hugh Bowman.

As with Protectionist, Lees is hoping for predicted rain in Sydney for the mare to take the jar out of the Rosehill track, which was firm last Saturday.

One hit wonder?

I mported stayer Renew and Tony McEvoy’s Big Memory are both set to have their lead-up runs to a Sydney Cup in Saturday’s

$350,000 Mornington Cup.

Victorian trainer Archie Alexander prepares OTI Racing’s UK Import Renew and is confident the five year-old is a big show come Cup time

He proved the distance was to his liking after coming through his last start third in the Adelaide Cup with no problems.

With over a month separating the Adelaide and Sydney Cups, Alexander was conscious he had to fit another race into Renew’s program and has preferred to keep him in Victoria for the Mornington Cup (2400m) as the preferred lead-up.

He is convinced Renew, winner of the Sandown Cup last November, is an out and out stayer who will relish the 3200m of the Sydney Cup at Randwick.

“He looks a million dollars just like he did going into the Adelaide Cup and I’m excited about his future,” Alexander said

Big Memory can confirm he is on target for the rich Sydney race as he also tries to lock in a Caulfield Cup start when he runs at Mornington.

Mornington Cup carries a ballot exemption into the 2015 Caulfield Cup for the winner.

A Mornington start has been in trainer Tony McEvoy’s plans for Big Memory all campaign, with the Sydney Cup on 11 April 11 his ultimate goal.

The stayer was beaten less than three lengths when 10th in last year’s Caulfield Cup.

That was after winning his way into the race in the Herbert Power Stakes.

He missed a Melbourne Cup start by one place in the ballot.

McEvoy acknowledged it was a chance for Big Memory to shore up a Caulfield Cup place if he won on Saturday and said the race fitted in well with the horse’s program.

“I wanted to go through the Melbourne program which I thought suited him better to get to the Sydney Cup,” McEvoy said.

“The Sydney Cup has been his goal all the way along and the Mornington Cup route was the best one I thought for him.”

Big Memory was a close fourth in the Carlyon Stakes first-up before his third to Index Linked and Extra Zero with 60kg in the Mornington Cup Prelude.

He was beaten more than seven lengths in the Australian Cup last start after settling back in the field.

McEvoy believes the horse is as good as he can be for Saturday though – “fit and happy”.

First Seal is ready to redeem herself in the Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday following her shock

last start defeat.

First Seal was pipped on the post by the Peter Moody-trained Plucky Belle when she was sent out the $1.60 favourite against the older mares in the Group One Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on 14 March.

Trainer John Thompson reported that the filly had pulled up in fine style and was ready to do battle again against the fillies.

“She has come through the race very well,” Thompson said.

“She just did it a little tough there, the early effort told in the finish. I’ll probably say the winner didn’t run past her, she probably stopped.

“She covered a bit of extra ground and Blake probably went a little fraction early in hindsight. The filly is good and that’s the main thing.”

First Seal was coming off a win in the Group Two Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on 28 February before her defeat in the Coolmore Classic but was also beaten first up when second to Adrift in the Group Two Liberty International Underwriters Light Fingers Stakes

(1200m) at Randwick on 14 February.

She will once again face the Waterhouse-trained Adrift on Saturday, along with Victorian Oaks winner Set Square, Victorian Oaks runner-up Thunder Lady, Alister Clark placegetter Maastricht, Peter Moody’s Sweet and Speed, in-form trainers Lee and Shannon

Hope’s Fenway and Chris Waller’s Ballet Suite on their way to the Australian Oaks at Randwick on 11 April.

Following the Vinery Stud Stakes, First Seal will take on the old mares again in the weight-for-age Group One Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) also on the second day of ‘The Championships’.

Golden Slipper winner Vancouver will not attempt the juvenile triple crown with trainer Gai Waterhouse keen to protect

his three year-old prospects.

A dominant winner of last Saturday’s Slipper, the unbeaten Vancouver will come back in the spring to pursue Cox Plate glory, which is the only major race on the Australian calendar Waterhouse has yet to win.

The Waterhouse-trained Pierro in 2012 is the last horse to claim the Slipper, Sires’ Produce and Champagne Stakes triple crown.

He then went onto finish third in the 2013 Cox Plate behind Ocean Park and All Too Hard.

“I’m very mindful of his three year-old career,” Waterhouse said after her colt’s win

in last Saturday’s Golden Slipper.

“He is a superior colt.”

Vancouver beat English and Lake Geneva to give Waterhouse a sixth Golden Slipper win, equalling the record of her father TJ Smith.

Blue Diamond Stakes winner Pride Of Dubai from the Peter and Paul Snowden stable is now the $4.60 favourite for next week’s Sires’ Produce ahead of the Waterhouse-trained English at $7.50.

Meanwhile, Waterhouse has more high expectations this weekend.

This time it’s around her smart three year-old filly Adrift’s chances in Saturday’s Group One Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill.

Adrift burst onto the scene first-up this

autumn when lowering the colours of gun filly First Seal in the Group Two Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) in February when backed from $101 into $41 before a seventh placing in the Group Two Surround Stakes (1400m).

Adrift that stepped out in the Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes (1500m) and wasn’t disgraced when beaten 2-1/4 lengths behind Plucky Belle. But Waterhouse says there are two significant factors on Saturday that can see the daughter of Zabeel return to winning form this weekend.

“The 2000 metres is exactly what she’s looking for and has been for a little while now,” Waterhouse said.

“She was purchased to be an Oaks filly and from the first moment I laid eyes on her I thought they were on the money.

“We’re also putting the blinkers on her this Saturday. I think they will also make a huge difference.

“Zabeels and blinkers are a winning formula. When you add to that the extra distance, I think you’ll really see what she’s capable of on Saturday.”

HARRY HAD BOUGHT HIMSELF a new BMW convertible for his 60th birthday and one afternoon he was enjoying a drive on the open road at 100kph.

He decided to see how fast his new baby could really go pushing the pedal to floor, but he soon had the police hot on his tail.

“I can get away from him with no problem,” Harry thought as he sped away at over 150kph, before he realised the better of it and pulled over to the side of the road.

“Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes and today is Friday,” the officer said. “If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I’ve never heard before, I’ll let you off with a warning.”

“Years ago my wife ran off with a copper and well, I thought you were bringing her back”

“Have a good day,” replied the officer leaving.

Trainer Robbie Griffiths is hoping Angelic Light will shine again under lights in

Friday night’s William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Angelic Light finished less than a length behind Buffering in the Group One Moir Stakes (1200m) last September before going down narrowly to Lankan Rupee in a closely fought Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) on Cox Plate eve.

She nearly fell in the Manikato Stakes before jockey Damien Oliver unsuccessfully protested against the winner.

Oliver and Angelic Light will team up again as Griffiths said his five year-old mare was in terrific order, resuming from a spell after an unsuccessful trip to Perth late last year.

“She’s got all the right form at the Valley,” Griffiths said. “I’m very happy with her.

“She’s had two trials and she galloped on Monday morning on the grass. She ran her last three (600m) in 35.5 (seconds) and she went really well.”

Her toughest contest will probably come from Group One winners Bel Sprinter, Earthquake, Rebel Dane, Tiger Tees and Famous Seamus as she attempts to break through for her first win at the highest level.

However, another threat could emerge from Griffiths’ own stable in the form of the Moonee Valley specialist It Is Written.

It Is Written has posted six of his 10 wins at the venue and split the subsequent Group winners Mourinho and Dissident in the Group Two Australia Stakes (1200m) three starts back.

The son of Written Tycoon then defeated the subsequent Oakleigh Plate placegetter Fast ‘n’ Rocking at Listed level on 6 February before running seventh in the Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield a month ago.

“He’s in good order too,” Griffiths said. “He’s worked well. He loves the Valley and he can’t be disrespected in that race either.

“His Oakleigh Plate run was very good. His Moonee Valley form is impeccable and he’s a very fit horse.”

Light ready to shine on William Reid
