RPII believes that play areas should be as safe as necessary – not as safe as possible. We currently undertake 15000+ inspections in the UK each year.

All of our playground inspections are carried out by fully qualified members of Register of Play Inspectors International (RPII) and who are DBS checked. We carry public liability and professional indemnity insurance of £10,000,000. We also operate under a quality management system to ISO 9001 that is certified by BSI – certificate number FS 522192.

Annual inspections and risk assessments are the recommendation of both the HSE and the British and European Standards (BS EN 1176). They are used to check the condition of the equipment and detail any

compliance defects. Faults and failures are risk-scored to enable you to prioritise works required. The annual inspection can also be used to check maintenance works carried out and determine any recurring problems that may arise.

Our annual inspection and risk assessment includes all fixed play equipment and associated surfacing as well as the site and ancillary items (seats, bins etc.).

Photographs of all items of equipment and photos of all matters that require work are included in the report. Paper reports can be provided if necessary but, as part of our commitment to the environment, we prefer to provide electronic reports whenever practical.

Leading the world of play safety

RPII works with Sportsafe to bring you annual safety inspections. Together we bring worldwide, practical experience to provide you with meaningful and sensible inspection reports – giving you the information you need to make your equipment as safe as necessary.

Climbing frames are one of the most important and versatile items of equipment in the modern gymnasium and sports hall. Sportsafe supplies and installs all ranges of climbing frames including the Trio and Spectrum frames through to rope frames. All work is carried out by a fully qualified team and booking times can be arranged to minimise disruption.

We offer a range of climbing and rope frames with an extremely wide choice of activities for all ages and abilities.

Single Frames ◄

Single hinged frames are the simplest units in the range, and are ideal for the low cost provision of climbing and movement activities.

Double Frames ▲

Double hinged frames are permanently connected and braced by a rigid bar that provides a unit of exceptional stability. This rigid bar also offers the possibility of attaching additional rope ladders, climbing ropes etc.

Our fantastic range of crafted equipment offers the user a variety of activities for developing movement and basic gymnastic skills with larger groups of pupils. The tactile and visual qualities of our timber units makes them firm favourites with children and schools alike and work well when sited in dual-use facilities.

Sportsafe offers an extremely wide choice of frames for activities for all ages and levels of ability. The standard units are 2.74m (9’) wide and 3.05m (10’) high, but ‘bespoke’ sizes are easily accommodated to suit individual sites and user requirements. These timber units can be fitted with traditional oval timber bars, or brightly painted ‘colour coded’ steel bars. To ensure safety and stability, each frame is wire braced and also fitted with a rigid connecting link, as appropriate.

The frame can be used in both ‘T’ and ‘Y’ configurations, and is braced by two steel ladders for extra stability. Each gate measures 2750mm high x 1830mm wide. Special sizes can be made to order.

The frame is supplied with gates in green, orange and purple, with purple ladders. Special colours can be supplied to order.

Gym Centre ►

An exciting addition to the Gym Time range, the Gym Centre consists of three frames each with a different range of activities. The frames are joined together and open out into a ‘Y’ configuration to present a multitude of activity and linking possibilities. At the end of the lesson the Gym Centre is easily folded away against the wall. The three frames folding one on top of another means that only a small wall space is needed.

The Gym Centre is equally suitable for use with traditional gymnastic equipment or other elements of the Gym Time range such as a bench, ladder, scramble net etc.

Space requirements for Gym Centre fixed in a ‘Y’ configuration: 3.0m from wall x 3.5m wide.

A further 2.0m circulation area around the equipment is recommended.

Gym Time ►

Gym Time is a range of trestles, tops and activities that are all compatible with each other to offer an unending number of variations.

To assist hand grip the equipment has been designed using larger tubes than conventional trestles, but the section of tube used also allows them to be lighter without sacrificing strength.

A unique fastening eases the job of assembly, allowing children to participate in setting up for class and even suggesting and trying out their own ideas.

£2,476Spectrum Frames ▼

Spectrum (Y-hinged) frames are perhaps the best option for modern junior gymnasia and, as such, are now one of our most popular product ranges. The space-saving Y configuration allows the frame to be used in quite small areas to full advantage. All three sections can be used simultaneously for a great variety of movement and exercise, and the unit can be easily opened and closed, even by quite small children. When stored, the unit only requires a relatively small wall area.

Kaleidoscope Frame ►

A very colourful timber frame particularly suited to schools where space is limited.

The frame comprises three gates, incorporating a fireman's pole, rope ladder with coloured wooden rungs, climbing rope with knots, and oval rings - in addition to the standard ladder sections.

Like the full size Spectrum Frame, it is manufactured from high quality selected timbers, but this version has a colour stain applied, providing a vibrant finish with the wood grain still visible.

The frame can be used in either a Y or T configuration, and is ladder braced.Dimensions : Each gate is 2438mm(96”) high x 1830mm (72”) wide.

ActivTower ◄

The ActivTower is a unique brightly coloured system designed with children in mind. It focuses on a range of gymnastic movements; balance, weight transfer, travelling, and flight and shape, but also offers a fun environment in which to perform these activities.

It has been called an indoor, outdoor climbing frame because it can be used in either environment. The ActivTower is made up of 5 frames, with 15 different activity panels or gates. It takes only moments to bring to life and when not in use rests against a wall like a traditional climbing frame.

The ActivTower is designed to work with both Gym Time equipment and traditional linking equipment. The ActivTower has already been tried and tested by some schools as part of an on-going Youth Sport Trust project. The design is by Niels Larsen, a company with over 100 years of manufacturing exceptional quality gymnastics equipment.

ActivTower

These are increasingly popular units, especially where an unsuitable roof structure prohibits the use of an overhead trackway.

The combination of a diagonally braced steel double top rail – unless the roof height is restrictive – and wire-bracingto the wall, offers exceptional stability and rigidity during use.

Manufactured in tough powder-coated steel, the hinged rope frames store flat against the wall when not in use.

The height and width of these units can be varied to suit individual client requirements.

Pendulum slip resistance test

As a professional Company we are ideally placed to offer a recognised and accredited service to establish the traction levels of all of your activity flooring.

The Pendulum slip resistance test gives a definitive answer whether your floor is fit for purpose under foot when wet or dry. The Pendulum slip resistance test (to BS7976) is the only procedure to be recognised by both the Health & Safety Executive and the law itself. If you have certified evidence that your floor meets the HSE guidelines you cannot be held liable for a slip injury.

The Pendulum test is carried out on the surface in dry and wet conditions using UKAS accredited calibrated pendulum and will identify the following:

• If the flooring is fit for purpose within the environment it is being used for• Where more slips may be likely to occur.

Following the test a report will be issued including all the slip test results and images of the locations tested. Where unsafe or unfit surfaces are found solutions and advice can be offered on how to overcome these problems quickly and efficiently. Cleaning techniques to help maintain slip resistance will be demonstrated if necessary.

The Pendulum test should be carried out annually as part of an all-round risk assessment policy.

The Sportwall, an 8ft x 4ft panel, was the first interactive product to hit the UK fitness market, offering hundreds of game combinations based on points/lives won and lost. Players score against the clock by zapping lights on the panels, simultaneously tracking a ball, targets, sounds, scores and a time clock, earning extra points for skill, speed, cardiovascular stamina and team cooperation.

Light and sound programs are available to coach specific sports, such as football, tennis, badminton, rugby and hockey, and ready made lesson plans can be provided for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the PE curriculum.

Nowhere is the excitement of the Sportwall more apparent thanNorthampton Academy, one of the first schools in the country to install the panels. The pupils' eyes light up when they realise their PE lesson will be ‘playing’ on ZigZag’s Sportwall.

The students use the panels to improve their skills in a variety of sportsincluding netball for passing, shooting, running and teamwork, and cricket, for batting, bowling, and increasing attention span and concentration under the pressure of a clock and a scoreboard.

The ZigZag Sportwall has even encouraged disaffected children to getinvolved in PE lessons.

ZigZag’s Sportwall combines the fun of a computer game with a powerful cardiovascular workout, which quickly develops excellent ball tracking skills, quick hands, fast feet and superior hand to eye coordination.

The Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy is a very popular canopy product due to its innate flexibility, which allows it to span to any length with a projection of up to 6 metres. It can also fix around corners or obstacles, providing cover in the most awkward of spaces.

The Coniston offers high UV protection to those underneath, and if fitted above a building's windows, it can also provide shade to those internal rooms. It is a popular choice for schools looking to provide playground shelter or an outdoor learning space.

The Coniston frame is entirely constructed from aluminium, including integral aluminium guttering, offering unbeatable durability and easy maintenance. It has a life expectancy of 25 years and comes with a 10 year guarantee.

With the increasing demand for a variety of sports both in the community and in our schools, it is difficult to provide individual facilities to cater for all sports in all weathers.

Worn out sports pitches and courts can be resurfaced using a range of different synthetic surface types, including:

• 3G rubber infilled synthetic grass for football and rugby • 2G sand filled or sand dressed artificial turf for multi sports including hockey• Needlepunch fibre bonded turf which can be installed in a range of bright colours for football, hockey and athletics

• Macadam and polymeric court surfacing for football, tennis netball and basketball.

Carrying out an upgrade to your MUGA with one of these durable artificial surfaces can improve the playing qualities of the facility, increase the longevity and ensure that the pitch is safe for use. Line markings can be applied to each of these surfaces in contrasting colours so the facility can be used to play a multitude of different sports.

Sportsafe manages new installations, repairs and maintenance of all MUGAs. MUGAs have evolved significantly over the last few years and the new era of synthetic surfacing has overtaken the old grit surfacing, improving the performance and safety characteristics of multi sports surfaces at schools and clubs.

With this in mind, our equipment is designed by fitness specialists to ensure children release as much energy as they can at break time - whilst enjoying themselves! Encouraging an active lifestyle as young as possible is growing in importance, particularly with health concerns associated with being inactive, it also teaches them good life skills. Our most popular pieces are…

Why our equipment is great for Schools

Create an additional outdoor classroom or outdoor training facility. We all know how important regular physical exercise is to children's health and well-being but PE lessons and traditional games are not for everyone. The solution: Fresh-Air Fitness’s outdoor gym equipment.

Children’s Tai Chi Spinners:Children love wheels and things that turn, they can use their imagination to drive a bus or a train or whatever while exercising arms chest and shoulders. Great for coordination and physical literacy.

Children’s Air Skier:This is one of the all-time favourites, it’s a fun swinging movement that gives a cardio workout and exercises hips and stomach, while developing balance, coordination and physical literacy.

Balance Beams:A classic piece of equipment to help children develop balance, coordination and physical literacy.

Children’s Elliptical Cross Trainer:A classic piece of cardio exercise for legs and arms. By using their muscles in unusual ways it helps children develop balance coordination and physical literacy. And anyway children like to copy what adults do!

Children’s Seated Leg Press:This is a strength exercise for the thighs but when you sit opposite your partner and chat away, you don’t even realise that you are exercising!

Children’s Rider:This is both a cardio and strength exercise exercising legs, arms and stomach as you would when riding a horse.

Children’s Double Air Walker:Another favourite because 2 children can exercise side by side with a fun but effective swinging movement, like walking on air. Cardio exercise for legs while improving balance, coordination and physical literacy.

Children learn through play from an early age – so learning in the playground is a natural progression! Children first learn to recognise shapes, colours, numbers and alphabets whilst having fun, but with the addition of some simple markings, lessons like Geography, History, Maths, English – and even World Awareness – can become more easily absorbed into a child’s memory through creative play.

All of these activities can be installed in your playground and lessons can be learnt whilst playing the games.

To get you started we will supply you with a games card for most new marking supplied.

Games played together encourage team spirit and awareness of the needs of fellow pupils. Children can show skills that bring out their personalities and achievements which cannot be assessed in the classroom.

Plan the playground for high activity (running) and another area for slower type activities (hopscotch, skipping). Music, dance and the theatre are very popular and take up hardly any space but is a great way to spend a playtime with your friends making up routines.

Let’s get teacher involved!

Lines 50mm or 100mm wide can be easily installed to create disabled bays and clearly marked car spaces for visitors or staff.

Crossings and hatched areas can also be swiftly laid to delineate areas that often get snarled up when ‘Authorised Personnel Only, Loading Bay or No Parking' areas are not clearly stated.

Wall signage also makes a huge difference as does clear indication of site access or clearly marked ‘Personnel Walkways’.

Enhance long stretches of dull wall space with bright, fun graphics i.e. sports figures, art, directional signs etc. Children love to look at directional signs and this can make changing classrooms for different lessons more easily managed with simple footprints, placed either outside or in.

Expert installersOur team of wet pour rubber crumb installers has remained unchanged for over 10 years, giving our customers confidence that our expertise in the field of laying this type of rubber safety surface is second-to-none.

We undertake complete groundworks, excavating and laying appropriate drainage materials before installing the base and top rubber surfaces if necessary. We install new surfaces and can also overlay new rubber over old rubber wet pour or tiled surfaces.

Work to European Standards

We work to European standards EN1176 and EN1177 which recommend the thickness of surface needed. The thickness of rubber ranges from 20mm to 90mm and is dependent on the critical fall height of the play equipment.

Brighten up your play area?

The predominant colour laid is black as it is the most moderately priced, but green and red are within most budgets and are often chosen to cheer up and brighten a shaded play area. Most other colours are also available.

We use only the best quality raw materials and alongside our installation expertise, this gives our customers the satisfying knowledge that they are receiving a quality safety surface, which will provide trouble-free use for many years.

Request a free visit

Every area requiring a safety surface is different, so we are happy to provide free quotations and a site visit if necessary to provide you with a competitive quotation for your required works.

Continuous wet pour rubber crumb is a popular safety surfacing as it provides many years of low maintenance use, along with a contemporary and colourful appearance. Its finished appearance is likened to tarmac but it is formed from either black or coloured rubber granules mixed with a specialist binder.
