Dear Students, Parents and Caregivers

A very busy sporting start to the Term has seen the participation of our students sky rocket to 680 across all our codes. The brilliant spell of weather has enabled coaches and players across the school to embrace trainings with a real vigour and zest. Judging by participation figures and representation in our top teams it is very evident we have a strong sporting prowess amongst our Year 7 cohort. It is a spectacular sight to see our field awash with the colours of our ten different houses each day.

Congratulations to our NZ Cup 1st X1 squad for a resounding victory in the first of their regional inter-school clashes. We wish them every success in their future matches. Outside of school there have been a large number of achievements from our students especially in swimming and surf lifesaving and these can be read in more detail on pages 12-13.

On the inter-house front “Cricket Max” has proved to be a very popular initiative. While still in the round-robin phase strong performances from Totara and Miro have them firmly ranked as favourites and we wish all Syndicates the very best of luck in their pursuit of the “Holy Grail” and the ultimate bragging right of being crowned Spirit Trophy champions for 2013.

Finally the first of our school sporting events (swimming sports) takes place at the Greerton Aquatic Centre, we look forward to many records being broken and encourage as many parents to attend and spectate at what is always a great start to the schools sporting calendar of events.

Good luck to Brett Hampton who travels to Invercargill this week as part of the Northern Districts one day squad to play Otago.

NZ CUP BOYS CRICKET

HOCKEY

2013 Hockey Trials commenced this week for girls and will continue next Monday and Wednesday 4th & 6th March 3.00pm - 4.30pm on our Turf - Teacher in Charge Mrs Flynn Rm 27.Boys Hockey trials are Monday/Wednesday 11/13th March and 18/20th March 3.00pm - 4.30pm on our turf - Teacher in Charge Mr Plummer Rm 36

We have been advised by Tauranga Hockey Association that their fees have increased by 22% this year and unfortunately we have to pass this cost on. School fees will be confirmed shortly.

We had our first NZ Cup Cricket game here at school this Wednesday against Bethlehem College. I think most of our team were feeling pretty nervous as this was their first NZ Cup match. Before the game we went through our drills and had a net session.

We won the toss and decided to bat first which turned out to be the right decision. Marcel Collett Rm 19 opened the batting and had a blast out in the middle proving unstoppable finishing with a magnificent total of 115 not out. Taylor Bettelheim Rm 17 contributed with 23 runs bringing up a team total of 177/3 off 20 overs. Bethlehem bowled a lot of wides giving us an extra 20 runs.

After lunch Rhys Mischewski Rm 19 and Finn Sears Rm 13 opened with bowling with good success. After the first 6 overs Bethlehem were 23/2. Bethlehem kept their wickets intact during the middle of the match but they fell short in the end with only making 97/9 in the 20 overs. Rhys and Alex Smith Rm 37 were the most economical bowlers on the day.

We played really well but still have a lot of work to do in bowling and fielding. It it really good to have that first win under our belts.

Tauranga Synchronised Swimming Club is on the lookout for new swimmers to join their team. If you are a good swimmer, and enjoy music, dance or gymnastics – this could be the sport for you. Trainings are on Saturday mornings at Baywave, from 9 to 10.30am for new swimmers. New swimmers that join this term will have the opportunity to swim in a team at the North Island competition which will be held here in Tauranga in July, and at the Nationals in Auckland in October. Their coach, Julieta Diaz, is a very experienced Argentinean synchronised swimming coach – so you will be coached by the best! Several of Tauranga Intermediate’s former students have become National Champions since she joined the club. If you’re interested, please call Angela Thomas on 552-5416 or 027-259-1150, or email her on [email protected] to to arrange for a free trial lesson.

Parkour /Free Running

(Parkour is a method of physical training that develops oneʼs ability to overcome obstacles (both physical and mental). It involves movement that will help if one is in a reach or escape emergency situation. Underpinning this is a philosophy of altruism and useful strength, longevity, self-improvement and self-understanding.

The skills of Parkour do not only apply to an urban environment, they can be utilized anywhere, in a forest, desert, mountains etc. It is not just the way you move that makes you a practitioner of Parkour, but the movement combined with the philosophy that defines it as Parkour. Parkour and Free Running are not the same thing.)

Parkour classes are once again available at Tauranga Intermediate. Classes are every Wednesday lunchtime in the Ivan Aitken hall during term 1. The Parkour class will also run in term 4.

There is no cost and no equipment needed.

Unfortunately due to the popularity of the classes some students will miss out this term. Those students will be allowed to try out for the class again in term 4.
