Hofstra Milestone Watch Career Player Stat Milestone Dane Johnson 64 blocks 36 to 100 Zygis Sestokas 85 three-pointers 15 to 100 Charles Jenkins 436 points 64 to 500 Season Opener: Hofstra is opening the 2008-09 season with a tough contest against ACC foe Clemson. In Head Coach Tom Pecora’s first seven seasons at the helm, Hofstra has compiled a 4-3 record on opening day, although it has lost the last two – road games at Charlotte in 2006-07 and Holy Cross in 2007-08. The other opening day loss for the Pride under Pecora came at nationally ranked Gonzaga in 2002-03. Its wins have come against Florida Atlantic (2001-02), Marist (2003-04), and Florida International (2004-05 and 2005-06). Hofstra Against The Charleston Classic Field: The Pride has a limited history against the other teams in the Charleston Classic, although it did have a home-and-home series with Clemson, its first round opponent, 20 years ago. Clemson visited Hofstra in 1988-89, with the Tigers coming away with a 77-63 win in the old Physical Fitness Center. The Tigers then won in South Carolina in 1989-90 on its way to an appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Those Clemson teams featured long-time NBA players Elden Campbell and Dale Davis. The one team in the field that Hofstra has an extended history with is Temple, with the Owls holding an 11-6 lead, although the last meeting was way back in 1980-81. Hofstra has one prior meeting apiece with both Western Michigan, falling in 1991-92 at the Boise State Albertson’s Classic 58-57, and Texas Christian, losing on the road in 1992-93 by a 66-63 score. The Pride has never faced Charleston, East Tennessee State or SIU Edwardsville. Hofstra Against The ACC: Hofstra has had several games against ACC teams in its history, with the last win coming in the 1998 Holiday Festival in New York City, when it blew out Georgia Tech 64-40. Last year, Hofstra lost to Virginia Tech at the Holiday Festival, in a game it played without leading scorer Antoine Agudio due to injury. Hofstra is 2-1 all-time against Virginia, 1-2 against Georgia Tech, 1-2 against Boston College, 0-1 against Virginia Tech, 0-1 against North Carolina State, 0-2 against Clemson, 0-3 against Florida State and 0-4 against Maryland. The Florida State and Boston College games were all played before those schools joined the ACC. Pecora Climbing Win Chart: Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora is now fifth on the Hofstra all-time coaching list with 115 wins (115-100). After three seasons, his record stood at 34-56, but over the next three years, he compiled an impressive 69-26 mark (.726). He is seven behind Jay Wright (122 wins) for fourth place, 31 behind Frank Reilly in third place and 37 behind Paul Lynner for second place.

Hoping To Pick Up Where He Left Off: Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) had an impressive freshman season last winter, earning Colonial Athletic Association and Metropolitan New York Rookie of the Year honors. He averaged 15.0 points per game and ended the season with a streak of 15 straight games in double figures. In fact, Jenkins scored in double figures in 27 of 29 games as a freshman, with one of the two exceptions coming on opening day against Holy Cross. On An Early Pace: Former guard Steve Nisenson (1962-65) held the Hofstra scoring record for 43 years (2,222 points) before it was finally broken last year by Antoine Agudio (who finished with 2,276 points). However, there is a good chance that Agudio might not get to hold the record for nearly as long as Nisenson. Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) averaged 15.0 points per game last year, putting him right on the same early pace that Agudio had (15.1 ppg as a freshman in 2004-05). In fact, after 29 career games, Jenkins has exactly the same number of points that Agudio did through 29 contests (436). Agudio raised his scoring average to 17.2 as a sophomore, 20.1 as a junior and 22.7 as a senior, and played in 122 games in his career. Here is where Jenkins stacks up to Agudio’s early pace at the same stage in his career: Career Career Points In Player Games Points Game 30 Antoine Agudio 29 436 16 Charles Jenkins 29 436 ?? Kings Of New York: In the last 10 years, Hofstra has had the best winning percentage in the Metropolitan New York area. Hofstra is a combined 187-122 (.605) since the start of the 1998-99 season, including six seasons of 20 wins or more. The next-closest metropolitan school in winning percentage is Manhattan with a record of 159-135 (.541) in the last 10 years, while Seton Hall is closest in total wins, 24 behind Hofstra at 163-140. Marist (158-136) and St. John’s (162-145) are also in the vicinity (see below).

Top Metro NY Winning Percentages – Last 10 Years School Record Pct. Hofstra 187-122 .605 Manhattan 159-135 .541 Seton Hall 163-140 .538 Marist 158-136 .537 St. John’s 162-145 .528 An All New York Five?: There is a possibility that Hofstra could have a starting five made up entirely of New York City residents this season. Returning starters Greg Johnson (Harlem, NY), Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY), Darren Townes (New York, NY) and Dane Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) are all from the five boroughs. Junior guard Tony Dennison (Long Island City, NY) and sophomore guard Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) are also strong candidates to start this year to fill the spot left by graduated guard Antoine Agudio. However, junior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY), and forwards Arminas Urbutis (Kaunas, Lithuania), Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania), Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) and Greg Washington (Centereach, NY) will all be in the mix as well and could break up the New York Five.

Page 3: sports mbb 111408notes - Hofstra University · Changing Of The Guards: The Hofstra Men’s Basketball program had three straight 20-win seasons from 2004-2007 (21-9 in 2004-05, 26-7

Home, Sweet Home: Hofstra compiled an 8-5 home record during the 2007-08 season. Despite the off-year at home, the Pride is still an impressive 38-6 in its last 44 regular season home games, and 39-7 in its last 46 overall home games (including two Postseason NIT contests in 2006). It is also 78-26 all-time at the renamed Mack Sports Complex (formerly Hofstra Arena) since the building opened on January 2, 2000, and is 94-26 in its last 120 overall home games, dating back to 1997-98 in the old Physical Fitness Center. The Pride won the 100th game played at the Mack Sports Complex 64-58 over Delaware on Saturday, Feb. 2. Changing Of The Guards: The Hofstra Men’s Basketball program had three straight 20-win seasons from 2004-2007 (21-9 in 2004-05, 26-7 in 2005-06, and 22-10 in 2006-07), thanks largely to a three-man backcourt of Loren Stokes, Carlos Rivera and Antoine Agudio. The triumvirate combined for over 5,600 career points and made up the highest scoring backcourt in the nation in 2006-07, when they averaged a combined 53.9 points per game. Agudio (2,276) finished as the leading scorer in Hofstra history, while Stokes (2,148) is now third and Rivera (1,225) is 18th.. The trio came to Hofstra in the same recruiting class, although Agudio took a medical redshirt as a freshman in 2004-05 and graduated last year. All three have now moved on, and sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) has accepted the torch after averaging 15.0 points per game last year, earning CAA Rookie of the Year honors. He will be assisted on the perimeter by junior college transfers Tony Dennison (Long Island City, NY) and Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY), senior Greg Johnson (Harlem, NY) and sophomore Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY). Forward Thinking: Hofstra enters the 2008-09 season with more frontcourt depth than it has ever had. Both 2007-08 starters return in seniors Darren Townes (New York, NY) and Dane Johnson (Brooklyn, NY), as well as all three back-ups: senior Mike Davis-Sabb (Queens, NY), senior Arminas Urbutis (Kaunus, Lithuania) and sophomore Greg Washington (Centereach, NY). The Pride also adds 6-9, 250-pound junior college transfer Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary), who led the NJCAA in rebounding last season at Broward Community College. Senior swingman Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) also started most of the 2006-07 season at the power forward position when the Pride had a small line-up. Return To Sender: Senior forward Dane Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) just missed setting the single-season record for blocked shots last winter, ending the year with 64, two shy of the record set by Adrian Uter in 2005-06. Johnson, who did not emerge as a full-time starter until midseason, figures to break that record this year and perhaps with a big season, even challenge the career record of 178 set by David Taylor (1979-83) despite only playing two years at Hofstra. However, he could face some tough competition for both records from sophomore forward Greg Washington (Centereach, NY). Washington had 43 blocks last year in only 12.2 minutes per game, an average of one per eight minutes, and figures to earn more playing time. A Hofstra Block Party: Hofstra set a team record for blocked shots in a season last year with 168, breaking the old record of 154 set in 2001-02. It was a huge jump from the 2006-07 season, when the Pride had only 74 blocks as a team. Current senior forward Dane Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) had 64 last year by himself.

Familiar Newcomers: Hofstra has brought in two new faces who should have some pretty decent chemistry on the floor. Junior guard Tony Dennison (Long Island City, NY) and junior forward Miklos Szabo (Szeghalom, Hungary) played for two years together at Broward Community College in Florida before coming to Hofstra this year. Both had successful junior college careers, as Dennison was a two-time NJCAA All-American, earning second team honors as a sophomore and third team as a freshman, when he was second in the nation in scoring (27.7 ppg). Szabo, meanwhile, led the entire NJCAA in rebounding last year at 15.3 per game. Szabo will miss the first two games of the Charleston Classic while serving a penalty imposed by the NCAA amateurism certification staff, stemming from his participation in one game with professionals in Hungary. A Winding Road To Hofstra: Junior Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY), in a manner befitting of his last name, did not take a straight line to Hofstra. Vines attended Henninger High School in Syracuse, where he graduated in 2004. He briefly attended Globe Institute in New York City, before playing for two seasons at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa. After earning NJCAA Third-Team All-America status last season, Vines joined Hofstra this fall. Vines Scholastic History: Junior guard Cornelius Vines (Syracuse, NY) had an interesting scholastic career, where he teamed with current Washington Wizards forward Andray Blatche at Henninger High School. Vines was also the quarterback on the Henninger football team, and had several head-to-head battles with Greg Paulus, the quarterback of Christian Brothers Academy (and current point guard at Duke). In fact, Vines engineered a big upset over Paulus and Christian Brothers in the Class AA football semifinals as a junior in 2003. Hofstra Televised 11 Times: Hofstra will have at least 11 televised regular season games this winter, starting with the Clemson game on CSS TV. The Pride could also have three other games televised as well – two in the Charleston Classic, and one in the ESPN Bracket Busters. Hofstra Picked Seventh: Hofstra was picked to finish seventh in the Colonial Athletic Association in a preseason vote of the conference’s coaches, sports information directors and media representatives. Defending regular season champion VCU was picked first, followed by Northeastern, Old Dominion. George Mason, Delaware, Georgia State and Hofstra. William & Mary was picked eighth, while James Madison, Towson, UNC Wilmington and Drexel round out the poll in the 12-team conference. Jenkins Named Second Team Preseason All-CAA: Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) was named to the Preseason All-CAA second team in a vote of the conference’s coaches, sports information directors, and media representatives. Jenkins was named the CAA Rookie of the Year last season, after tallying 15.0 points per game and scoring in double figures in 17 of 18 conference games. The first team was Marc Egerson (Delaware), Matt Janning (Northeastern), Gerald Lee (Old Dominion), Leonard Mendez (Georgia State) and Preseason Player of the Year Eric Maynor. Joining Jenkins on the second team were Junior Hairston (Towson), Abdulai Jalloh (James Madison), Larry Sanders (VCU) and John Vaughan (George Mason).

Jenkins Honored By College Hoops Net: Sophomore guard Charles Jenkins (Queens, NY) was named an honorable mention high major All-American by the website collegehoopsnet.com. Jenkins was one of three CAA players honored by College Hoops Net, as VCU’s Eric Maynor was the Preseason High Major Player of the Year and Northeastern junior guard Matt Janning joined Jenkins on the honorable mention list. Lester Comes Through In Clutch: Sophomore swingman Nathaniel Lester (Brooklyn, NY) showed an early propensity for making clutch baskets in his freshman season last winter. He made a game-tying three-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to help send the Dec. 1 UNC Wilmington game into overtime (the Seahawks eventually won). He also knocked down a key three-pointer with just over two minutes to play against Charlotte on Dec. 15, giving the Pride the lead for good at 66-65, and had eight points in the final 1:30 of a 77-74 loss to Stony Brook on Dec. 12. He had four points in the second overtime against George Mason on Jan. 17 in a losing effort, and hit a three-pointer with 47 seconds left at Delaware to pull the Pride within three points. Sestokas Closing In On 100 Threes: Senior swingman Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) enters the new season with 85 career three-pointers, 15 shy of becoming the latest member of the 100 three-pointer club. Antoine Agudio shattered the old school record, finishing his career last year with 357 three-pointers (the old record had been 192 three-pointers when Agudio broke it, although second place is now Carlos Rivera with 201). With the three-point line now moved back a foot, Agudio’s record will likely never be challenged. Lots Of Nailbiters: Half of Hofstra’s games last year (15 of 30) were within four points in the final 30 seconds of regulation, while nine featured tying or winning shot attempts in the last 15 seconds: Nov. 17 Manhattan made tying tip-in (1.1 seconds) Nov. 21 Antoine Agudio missed tying 3 at St. Francis (3 secs) Dec. 1 Nathaniel Lester made tying 3 vs. UNCW (0.1 secs) Dec. 12 Charles Jenkins missed tying 3 vs. Stony Brook (0 secs) Jan. 5 James Madison missed tying 3 (3 secs) Jan. 10 Antoine Agudio missed tying 3 at UNCW (6 secs) Jan. 17 George Mason missed winning jumper (0 secs) Jan. 26 Northeastern missed tying 3 (15 secs) Feb. 16 Antoine Agudio made winning jumper at JMU (9.3 secs) The Pride’s 85-78 double-overtime loss against George Mason on Jan. 17 actually featured five dramatic shots in the closing seconds. The Patriots had three winning shot attempts in the final six seconds of regulation (all missed), then made a tying three-pointer in the first overtime with 4.4 seconds left, while Hofstra missed a winning three at the overtime buzzer. Next Up: After the Charleston Classic, the Pride will return to action for its 2008-09 home opener on Monday, Nov. 24 when it takes on the College at Old Westbury at the Mack Sports Complex at 7 p.m. Old Westbury is located on Long Island and is coached by former Hofstra player Bernard Tomlin (’76), who was a member of the program’s first NCAA Division I qualifying team in 1975-76, which lost in overtime to Connecticut.

Agudio Breaks Hofstra Scoring Record: Former guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) became the all-time leading scorer in Hofstra Basketball history on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Delaware, breaking a mark which stood for 43 years. The school record of 2,222 was set by Steve Nisenson in three years from 1962-65 (during the freshman ineligibility era). Agudio also finished his career fourth in CAA history in scoring.

All five starters from Hofstra’s 26-7 team in 2005-06 have moved on to professional careers (Agudio, Loren Stokes, Carlos Rivera, Adrian Uter and Aurimas Kieza), making up five of the 13 Pride alumni to play professionally since 2000. Rivera began in Poland for Polonia Warsawa, where he played with another Hofstra alumnus, Norman Richardson (’01), before recently returning to Puerto Rico to play for the Arecibo Captains. Loren Stokes began his professional career playing in Cyprus for Aspis APOEL, before joining Okapi Aalstar in Belgium. Kieza (’06) is playing in his native Lithuania for Siauliai, while Uter most recently played in Portugal for Illiabum last year. Kenny Harris, a reserve forward on the 2005-06 team, has also played professionally in Kuwait and Australia. Speedy Claxton (’00) is currently in his ninth season in the NBA, but is on injured reserve with the Atlanta Hawks. Rick Apodaca (’03), who is a member of the Puerto Rico National Team, is playing in Puerto Rico after finishing fourth in the Italian League in scoring in 2006-07 for Scafati. Wendell Gibson (’05) most recently played for Atenas in Uruguay, while Roberto Gittens (’01, Czech Republic, Finland), Jason Hernandez (’01, Puerto Rico), and Lars Grubler (’03, Germany) also have had pro careers.

Odds And Ends: Some strange, unusual, and sometimes relevant facts regarding the Hofstra Men’s Basketball program: TGIS: Strangely, 10 of Hofstra’s 12 wins last year came on Saturday afternoons. The only exceptions were a Monday, Jan. 28 win over Longwood and a Wednesday, Feb. 20 win over Towson. Chairmen Of The Boards: Eight different players for the Pride had a 10-rebound game last season. What’s unusual is that six players have accomplished the feat one time apiece. Dane Johnson and Darren Townes each did it four times, while Greg Washington (Virginia Tech), Mike Davis-Sabb (Charlotte), Greg Johnson (Longwood), Antoine Agudio (Charlotte), Nathaniel Lester (Marist) and Charles Jenkins (Iona) each did it once. Can We Come Here More Often?: Hofstra had its best offensive performance of last season on Saturday, Feb. 16 at James Madison, winning 86-85. The previous year, its best offensive performance was also on the road at the JMU Convocation Center, where it won 98-78 in the 2006-07 regular season finale. Saved By The Buzzer: Over Head Coach Tom Pecora’s seven seasons, opponents are 0-15 on meaningful (tying or winning) buzzer beaters, including each of his first three collegiate wins as a head coach in 2001-02. Hofstra has had game-winning three-pointers from Aurimas Kieza (vs. ODU in 2005-06) and Carlos Rivera (vs. Columbia in 2003-04) in that span, and a game-tying three-pointer from Nathaniel Lester last year against UNC Wilmington with 0.1 seconds left. Overall, though, Hofstra (3-20) and opponents (0-15) have combined to shoot only 3-35 on meaningful last-second shots in the Pecora Era (not counting desperation shots beyond 25 feet). Working Overtime: Hofstra has played a total of 13 overtime games in the last four seasons, a normal average for a Division I team. What has been odd, however, is the number of times it has gone to overtime against the same opponents. The Pride has played four overtime games against Drexel since 2004-05, including both meetings in 2006-07 (with the road team winning each game). Last year’s overtime loss to UNC Wilmington on Dec. 1 marked the third time in the last three years that Hofstra has gone past regulation against the Seahawks, including a double-overtime game in 2006-07 and a triple-overtime game in 2005-06. The Pride also earned an overtime win over Manhattan on Nov. 17, the second straight year that Hofstra has gone to an extra session with the Jaspers. Just One Left: With its 70-65 win at Northeastern’s Matthews Arena on Jan. 26, Hofstra has now won a CAA road game in every conference arena, with the exception of VCU’s Alltel Pavilion. The Pride is 0-6 at Alltel, but has picked up at least one road win in every other gym as CAA members. The Pride had been 0-2 at Northeastern in the CAA, but it did win one game at Matthews Arena in 1996-97 when the schools were in the America East.
