Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you should:
• Know the different types of injuries and illness associated with sports participation
• Be able to deal with injuries and illnesses associated with sports participation
• Understand risks and hazards associated with sports participation
• Be able to undertake a risk assessment relevant to sport.
• Pupils will understand the difference between a chronic and acute injury.
• Pupils will be able to recognise the common sign and symptoms for injuries.
• Pupils will be able to categorise common injuries as acute or chronic.

What is an injury?
is damage or harm caused to the structure or function of the body caused by an outside agent or force, which may be physical or chemical.

Types of Injury
Chronic Injuries
usually the result of a single, traumatic event
Acute Injuries
Common examples include: fractures, sprains,
shoulder dislocations, and muscle strain.
Result of repetitive micro-trauma to the tendons, bones and joints & occur over time
Common examples includetennis elbow, runner’s knee,
and shin splints.
Why do overuse Why do overuse injuries occur?injuries occur?
The human body has a tremendous capacity to adapt to physical stress.
In fact, many positive changes occur as a result of this.
With exercise, bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments get stronger and more functional due to remodelling.
The remodelling process involves both the break down and build up of tissue.
HOWEVER! HOWEVER!
There is a fine balance between the two and if break down occurs more rapidly than build up, injury occurs.
What are the What are the symptoms of chronic symptoms of chronic
injuries?injuries?Common symptoms of overuse injuries are:
Muscle aches and numbness
Swelling and soreness
Decreased strength or speed (weakness)
Pain with exercise or activity.
What are the What are the symptoms of acute symptoms of acute
injuries?injuries?Common symptoms of acute injuries are:
Sudden, severe pain
Swelling
Inability to place weight on a lower limb
Extreme tenderness in an upper limb
Inability to move a joint through full range of motion
Extreme limb weakness
Visible dislocation / break of a bone
