CaPtaiN’S MeSSaGe

Dear Members,

I hope you had a festive time celebrating the Lunar New Year with your family and friends.

Here at Orchid Country Club, members can expect the year of the Rabbit to be an eventful and exciting one. Golfers can look forward to our Golf Carnival in June, where members can partake in games and challenges while mingling with fellow golf kakis. If you have missed Handa Singapore Classic at OCC last year, I believe you will be excited to know OCC is honoured to be the host venue for this world-class tournament for the second year running. We urge all members to join us either as a spectator or volunteer, to make the event another resounding success, and be proud to be part of this experience.

Following the positive response we received from our first outing last year, Night Fishing @ the Green is back again in April. We are enthused that members are participating in new activities like this. As such, the Club Management would like to assure members that we have a series of innovative and interesting members’ events specially planned for you.

This year, members can look forward to an exciting calendar of events, including Poolside Sizzle, a BBQ event by the pool, and Orchid Splash, a series of monthly pool activities. Of course, you can also expect invitations to our annual events such as Members’ Luncheons and August Ball where you can enjoy with your family and friends

I am pleased to welcome the Club’s newest tenant, UrbanXtion Sports, which has chosen OCC as its new home. At its 1,500 square feet grounds here, UrbanXtion is offering members archery lessons at a discounted rate. This is yet another activity that you can enjoy at OCC, as we strive to make the Club a vibrant hub for the whole family.

From sporting challenges to social happenings and new tenants joining us, the Club Management will continue to introduce new events and activities which you and your family can participate.

Finally, to thank you for your continued support and patronage, we will be rewarding lucky members through our Loyalty Program where you can stand a chance to win attractive prizes.

With your active involvement in the Club’s activities, together we can make OCC a unique place to meet and enjoy.

Enjoy Orchid – Making a difference with our passion!

In recent years, the Club has invested huge sums of money to upgrade our three golf courses and driving range which has won us the accolades of being one of the Top 3 Best Golf Courses in Singapore in 2010.

After very careful deliberations, the General Committee and Club Management have decided that with effect from 1 April 2011, member’s guest green fees, night golfing fees, buggy fees and driving range ball fees will be adjusted to manage the rising operating and maintenance costs of the golfing facilities.

We seek your kind understanding and would like to thank you for your continuous support for the Club.

rOBert teO: GOlF at aNy aGeOCC golfing member robert teo has scored so many hole-in-ones that his golfing buddies named dendro 8 as “robert’s Corner”.

When did you start golfing and what sparked your interest in golfing?I started quite late, at 40 years old, and I have been golfing for the past 20 years. My friends sparked my interest in golfing when they frequently asked me to join them for their golf games and that was when I decided to pick up golfing.

How often do you play golf in OCC?On average, I play golf in OCC twice a week together with my wife and friends.

You have taken part in many games and competitions. Which was the most memorable? The most memorable game that I played was in 2007 during the BMW Championship held in Sentosa. I was surprised that I came in first and won a week’s trip to Sydney with my family and all my expenses were being paid for during the trip. That makes it the most memorable game in my golfing years.

We heard that you have won a car too during a game. When was that and how do you feel about that?In 2008 at OCC, during the Secretary General’s Cup, I won a car. I saw the marshal’s jumping sky high cheering at me and I did not believe that it was a hole-in-one until I went over there to see it for myself – I was dumbfounded.

Your regular golfing kakis have privately named Dendro 8 as the “Robert’s Corner”. How do you feel about that?I don’t mind having them to name that as my corner as they claimed that my shots will be perfect for me since it is my corner.

Any golf tips that you might want to share with fellow golfers in OCC?I am 64 years old; I believe golf can be played at any age. Through my experience, I believe one should enjoy the game, practice at the driving range and/or hire a coach together with a group of friends to practice golf frequently.

Once the ball is in the bunker, the rule prohibits the player to ground the club before making a stroke, and that adds difficulty to the execution of the shot. Nonetheless, you may be happy to know that you do not need to make drastic adjustments to your set-up in bunker play.

What you need to do is take an open stance and open the club face to some degree, increasing the effective loft of the sand wedge that permits you to use the sole to slide through the sand under the ball easily.

For the basic greenside bunker shot where the ball is sitting clean on top of raked sand, take the back swing up with earlier wrist cock and hit into the sand 2 to 3 cm behind the ball with follow through to your shoulder height. Complete the typical splash sand shot to get the ball onto the green.

interview with Shayna NgWhen did you start bowling and what sparked your interest in bowling?I started bowling when I was in primary school, actually here in OCC. My parents always came here weekly for leisure bowling and that’s where I picked it up.

Who has given you the most support in your bowling career so far?I guess it would be the coaches. I had different coaches along the way, and they all helped me. And of course, my family supported me too.

You won silver in the women’s singles bowling competition and picked up the gold medal in the trios event. How did you feel winning at your first ever Asian Games outing? It was awesome, because all the years of hardwork, training and competing basically just came down to that very moment. At the beginning of the year, the coaches asked us what our goals were, and that was what I wrote, to win back a gold. It’s like a dream come true.

What was the most memorable during the Games and why? What caught me by surprise was the teambonding spirit. We really were there for each other, it didn’t really matter who won the medal. What matters is if Singapore won the medal. The coaches kept telling us, “Country first, then yourself.”

For my singles event, my teammate, Cherie was in a very good position to kick me down. It’s really mixed feelings as you want the medal yourself but your mate’s in the running as well, and you don’t know which to hope for. So the coach was telling me, it doesn’t matter who wins. The country comes first, which is true. So I guess that’s the most memorable.

Are you looking at bowling as a long term career option and what’s your plan for the future? My next aim would be to complete my studies, and then we’ll see how it goes for bowling. I took a year off from my studies this year to compete. After the Asian Games, I’m going to focus on my studies. I’m now doing a degree in Sports Science, from Edith Cowan University.

interview with Mary Ng How long have you been bowling?

My husband and I both have an interest in bowling, so we’ve been bowling for a long time. After we bought the OCC membership in 1993 or 1994, out of convenience,

dOuBle StriKe FOr OCC’S MOtHer-dauGHter BOWliNG duOBowling team Captain, Mary Ng, has lead team OCC to second spot in last year’s inter-club mixed bowling league. Her daughter, Shayna Ng, brought back a gold medal for Singapore in the last asian Games and is recently honored as Bowler of the year by Singapore Bowling Federation. We chat with them and find out how bowling has become part of their family.

we would come to the Club to bowl every weekend. That’s when we really got attached to the game. Every Friday, we would bowl without fail. My colleagues were keen on bowling so I brought them here and we would bowl weekly, until today. Along the way, I joined the inter-club league, and I’ve been the bowling team captain for six years.

Do you often bowl with your daughter or family? When I come for the game, my husband will come along. And my youngest daughter, Mandy, will also join us.

Did you help Shayna prepare for the Asian Games? If yes, how so?Yes, I do. Before she goes for her tournaments, I make sure that she has everything that she needs. In a way, I’m also managing her results.

If OCC members are interested to be part of the OCC bowling team, how do they join? They have to come for yearly selections, which is in January.

The OCC swim team did the Club proud with an excellent showing at the invitational swim meet held on 12 February. Swim teams from seven clubs competed in a total of 50 events for different age categories, from seven to fourteen years old. The first race started at 9.00am with the freestyle event, and continued with the breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly races, and freestyle and medley relays. Cheers filled the Olympic Pool as family, friends and supporters rooted for their teams, spurring our young swimmers on.

And as host, the OCC swim team did not disappoint. Our junior swimmers had a place in at least one of the top three spots for every race, and emerged as the overall champion with a

total score of 739.

Well done, team OCC!

We would like to thank all swimmers, parents, supporters and spectators for their participation in the swim meet, and see you again next year!

goLDenMOTIONWith these exercises, keeping fit and being healthy is in your court!

The body gets older but that doesn’t mean it needs to get weaker. There are physical activities that are suitable for older adults; they help to keep fit without being too strenuous.

amazing aerobics Aerobic Activity refers to activity in which your body’s large muscles move in a rhythmic manner for a sustained period of time of at least 10 minutes. Aerobic activity – also called endurance activity – is the primary form of activity that helps prevent disease and adds more healthy years to your life.

For important health benefits, older adults should aim to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week. Aerobic activity should be performed for at least 10 minutes per session. Super strength Strength Activity increases skeletal muscle strength, power, endurance, and mass and bone strength.

These include muscle-strengthening activities (e.g. Hand-held weights, resistance bands, callisthenics, strength training equipment) and some mind-body exercises (e.g. Qigong, Taiji, Yoga, Pilates). Points of CautionEach aerobic and strength exercise session should include proper warm-up, cool down and flexibility exercises. Flexibility exercises can be an integrated part of one’s weekly physical activity routine and may include mind-body exercises.

Those individuals with limitations or with chronic conditions should follow their doctor’s advice on the volume and types of physical activity that are best for them.

Those planning to become more physically active than they are now should review the Pre-Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) before they start.

Par-Q and youThe Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommends all adults to go through the Pre-Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) to gauge their fitness levels before embarking on any forms of exercise.

Regular exercise is associated with many health benefits. If you are between the ages of 15 and 69, the PAR-Q will help you determine if you should check with your doctor before you start exercising. If you are older than 69 years of age, and you are not used to being very active, check with your doctor before you embark on an exercise programme.

Common sense is your best guide when you answer these questions. Please read each question carefully. Answer all of them honestly to the best of your ability, indicating a “yes” or “no” answer. Discuss the final answers with your doctor.

1. Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?

p Yes p No

2. Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?

p Yes p No

3. In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?

p Yes p No

4. Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or have you ever lost consciousness?

p Yes p No

5. Do you have a bone or joint problem ( for eg, back, knee or hip) that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity?

p Yes p No

6. Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs ( for eg, water pills) for your blood pressure or heart condition?

p Yes p No

7. Do you know of any other reason why you should not do physical activity?

p Yes p No

If you answered YES to one or more questions: Talk with your doctor by phone or in person before you start becoming more physically active. Tell your doctor about the PAR-Q and which questions you answered YES.
