Track teams compete in Drake Relays Last Tuesday the girls’ team ran in the 38 th Annual Mustang Relays at Loras College in Dubuque. Sophomore Molly Breitbach led the team, winning the 100 meter dash and anchoring in the first place 4x100 relay along with senior Hannah Rochford, junior Audrey Richards and sophomore Allison Schwach. Senior Alex Bartz won the high jump for Xavier clearing five feet. Dubuque Wahlert ran away with the team title with 212 points. The Saints finished fourth in the six-team field with 63 points. AroundthesametimetheXavier boys track team won six events at the South Tama Invitational. The Saints looked particularly strong in the relays, winning the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 events. Junior Nick Steingreaber won the 100 meter dash and senior Alec Clasen claimed the high jump at 6-foot- 6, matching his best jump of the season. Xavier won the meet. The Drake Relays took place last weekend. For the Xavier girls, Alex Bartz qualified for the high jump, the girls 4x100 also qualified and Molly Breitbach qualified in the open 100. For the Xavier boys, Alec Clasen qualified for the high jump, Nick Steingreaber qualified for the open 100, Craig Murtha qualified in the discus throw. The boys also qualified in the 4x100 and 4x200. The Saints were troubled when junior Cal Stovie got a hamstring injury the day before he was supposed to run in the 4x100 and 4x200. Luckily senior Josh Nelson was able to fill in for the injured Stovie. “I was kind of bummed I couldn’t run but I was thankful Josh was able to fill in for me, he really stepped up and delivered for us.” Stovie said. “I think we all had a really good time at Drake. It was a good experience and even though we didn’t do as well as we thought, we are going to work hard the next couple of weeks and hope that we can perform better at districts and get to state.” Sophomore Allison Schwach said. The girls’ run tomorrow at Prairie in the MVC Divisional and the boys’ at Kingston also in the MVC Divisional. Junior David Kirpes competes in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay in a meet at Kingston Stadium. Although the Saints came out determined to get another victory, it was the Golden Eagles who came out with the win with a score of 3-2. The Saints then had a double header on Saturday April 21. They took on the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs first at Xavier. The Saints ended with their third win of the season with a score of 3-0. They then played the Linn-Mar Lions, with Tommy Bales getting the first and only goal of the game getting the Saints the win. The Saints took on the Washington Warriors last Tuesday. The Saints came out strong but the Warriors overcame and gave the Saints their fifth loss of the season. The boys played last Saturday in their second double header at Xavier against the Iowa City West Trojans and the Iowa City High Little Hawks. The Saints first took on the Trojans first, but the Trojans came out on top, winning 1-0. In their next game they lost to the Little Hawks, by a score of 3-0. “We are learning from our losses as well as our wins so that we can improve individually and as a team. We are working hard in practice and games so that we can get ready for state,” junior Isaac Frisch said. The Saints are now ranked no. 2 in the class 2A. They have a current record of 4-7 in the regular season. They continue to work to improve throughout the season, with an ultimate goal to get a third straight state title. The Saints next play today against the Kennedy Cougars at Kennedy. The team played five days later at Kingston Stadium against Cedar Rapids Washington in hope to keep their undefeated season alive. The Saints were unable to score and the Warriors took advantage as they won the game, 1-0, to hand Xavier its first defeat of the season. “We try to take the positives from all of them. This is one we will be able use a lot to work on and get better for state,” Xavier coach Doug Graham said in an interview with MetroSportsReport. The team looked to bounce back April 28 in a double- header against Iowa City West and Iowa City High. In its first match, the Saints won 3-0 against the Little Hawks. In the teams second game, the score was tied 1-1 after regulation, with Bailey scoring the only goal for the Saints. In overtime the Trojans of Iowa City West scored a goal to defeat the Saints 2-1. Track teams compete in Drake RelaysLast Tuesday the girls’ team
