Lot: 30ONE OF THE EARLIEST ARTEFACTS WITH ANASSOCIATION BETWEEN ENGLISH AND AUSTRALIANCRICKET A prize bat presented by Fred Lillywhite to GeorgeMarshall in 1861, the bat with specially selected ringed grain, stamped M. Dark and Sons, Lords Ground, the reversestamped PRIZE BAT, FROM FRED LILLYWHITE, TO, GEO.MARSHALL, 1861, the reverse stamped PRIZE BAT, G.MARSHALL The early Australian international cricketer GeorgeS. Marshall is best remembered for his entrepreneurial flair. In1861 he established Melbourne's first major sporting goodsstore as well as the Cricketers Hotel next door in SwanstonStreet. He began importing the best quality sports equipmentfrom England including goods from Fred Lillywhite who with hisbrothers had established Lillywhites, the famous sportingoutfitters that still trades to this day at Piccadilly Circus inLondon. The present high quality prize bat is dated 1861, thevery year Marshall began the business. The decision to launchthe business was no doubt influenced by the first Englandcricketing tour to Australia in 1861-62. Marshall played in thefamous match billed between The World and the Surrey XI atthe MCG on 1st, 3rd & 4th March 1862. Touring was the otheractivity that links Marshall and Lillywhite. Fred had organisedthe first overseas tour by an England team to the USA andCanada in 1859, whilst Marshall helped sponsor the secondEnglish tour to Australia, George Parr's team of 1863-64. Oneof the few accounts of Marshall's ground breaking Melbournesports shop appeared in the autobiography of the pioneeringAussie Rules footballer Henry Harrison: "Marshall, Melbourne'ssporting goods entrepreneur, advertised for sale to the youngman about town (concerned no doubt to be up with the latest inEnglish fashion), 'famous Rugby Footballs which took the PrizeMedal at the [London] Exhibition ... being a new description ofball, made on a scientific principle, and that will fly many yardsfurther than the old-fashioned sort". Other references appearedin 'Bell's Life' noting that the players for the following Saturday'steams "would be posted in Marshall's window." The dated batbeing offered for sale here must surely be one of the earliestsurviving examples relating to cricket in Australia.Estimate: £3,000.00 - £5,000.00

Lot: 277An intriguing early circa 1878/1880 pine-boxed French lawntennis set, the rustic pine box, stencilled T-3, measures 100 by30 by 13cm., and contains four racquets, two extremely rareand early tennis balls, a pair of two part varnished pine postswith round finials, eight stakes, a pine handled skewer, a stringbag to hold balls, four guy-ropes with wooden adjusters, and aquantity of twine (presumably to repair the net), unfortunatelythe net is missing The set contains four very early and raresquare-headed lawn tennis racquets, originally discovered at aconvent in France. The racquets being a little narrower andshorter than standard racquets, 63 by 18.5cm., because themanufacturers would have had to supplied at least four racketsin the set, with posts, guy ropes, mallets etc., all of which wouldhave had to fit inside a closed box. The two piece poles to theset give the date away. From the finial to the line inscribedaround the post (showing how far that they should be insertedinto the ground) they measure 4 feet 9 inches in height, andtherefore the date of the set must relate to the period circa1878/1880, before the posts were reduced to 4 feet. Thehandles of the rackets are smooth and round with two slimleather bands added at the top of the handle pieces and at thebutt-end. Several lateral strings are broken and they have 7rows of red trebling strings. The balls are fascinating in theirconstruction, and must be some of the earliest examples inexistence, both of them have suffered as a result of theattentions of rodents, the most complete example is less than 2inches in diameter, and consists of a rubber core (made fromthe adhesion of two half ball moulds - now perished to a rock-hard consistency) covered with kid leather and a fine hand-sewn seam. All in all a rare and desirable example of a reallyearly French lawn tennis set.Estimate: £500.00 - £800.00
