It’s been an eventful but exciting twelve months for everyone at M&S Sports and as we look forward to our first action packed summer, it is nice to reflect on the last year in our maiden newsletter.

POOLSIDE! M&S SWIM NEWS....It has been a fantastic year for M&S Swim! Alongside our regular swim programme, we have taken part in a number of charity swim events and run three successful swim camps! We have had strong support from a future Olympian and we are currently building our very own pools at Safa....... Here are some of the highlights from the past year.

JESS Jumeirah! Our JESS Jumeirah programme is bursting at the seams with over 300 M&S Swim Stars busy working their way through our star levels.

JESS Ranches! We are delighted to announce that from September we will also be running the swim progarmme at JESS Ranches. Our progarmme will include Baby Splash, Learn to Swim, Development, Squads and Masters.

Charity Gala and Swim Kilimanjaro! Over 120 M&S Swim Stars took part in our Charity Swim Gala back in March and we raised over AED 6000 for the Al Ihsan Charity Centre in Ajman. Later on in the year, our Swim Stars supported Mr Ben Parnell, Head of PE from JESS Jumeirah and helped him to swim the height of Kilimanjaro raising over AED 10,000 for the Amani Children’s Home in Tanzania. Mr Parnell is taking part in the Gulf for Good Mount Kilimanjaro climb in July - Good Luck Ben from everyone at M&S Sports!

Andrew Chetcuti! We have had lots of support this year from Andrew Chetcuti. Andrew, a former Head Boy from Dubai College is swimming for Malta in the Olympics this summer. We would like to say a BIG thank you to Andrew for all his support and the inspiration he has provided for our swimmers. GOOD LUCK in London Andrew, we will be cheering for you!

Safa Partnership! Our exciting partnership with Safa School means that from September we will be running a full swim programne from Baby Splash right through to Adult Masters with everything in between, in our brand new pools at the new Meydan Street site. The Safa Aquatics programme will be headed up by Coach Ray Magardie, ex Head of PE at Nibras. Coach Ray (or Sting Ray as he will be known) is really excited to be joining the M&S Team. Go Coach Sting Ray!

OFFSIDE! M&S FOOTBALL NEWS....It has been a roller-coaster year for the M&S Football team, starting the year with three venues and ending the year with eight. There have been highs and there have been lows, new faces and old ones, but what has remained has been the focus on the quality of the programme delivered and we can say honestly we have been delighted with the progress made at all our venues across the UAE.

It is very simple to place a few cones down onto the floor and let children ‘have a kick-about’, what isn’t so simple is producing a programme that caters for the individuality of each and every child within a team context and that can be said from both a technical and a psychological viewpoint. I hope that you as parents and your fantastic children have seen that there is always a ‘method behind the madness’ as we strive to create learning through fun and develop your children as people and not just players.

Trying to summarise the year into a paragraph is not an easy task, we have built and sustained programmes across the UAE; at SRS where we have been all year (thank you Joyce) we have taken two teams to two separate tournaments, providing children with valuable life experience and a focus on participation and enjoyment over winning (the children want to do that on their own!) At UAS the enthusiasm from the children is off the richter scale. The fantastic girls squad we now have at JESS Jumeirah which started with just two girls and is now twenty-four! Our loyal mini-kickers at Star Mirdif and Raffles, and after long negotiations our first programme in Abu Dhabi at Al Forsan International Sports resort…the list goes on…

I would like to personally thank some of the staff who have supported us this year; Joyce (SRS), Ben and Annie (JESS Jumeirah), Donna (UAS), Carlos (Al Forsan), Colin (Raffles) I could write a very long list. All of the coaches who are still with us and those who unfortunately are not, they have all played a part and most importantly you the parents, without whom M&S simply would not be possible. Thank you for all of your support.

With many exciting venues coming, including the one we are building ourselves and under Coach AJ’s leadership at M&S Football we look forward to a bright future (a black and yellow one!!!) and hope you will be part of that with us!
