The Zambian people are known for their friendly demeanour and their positive outlook on life. Despite poverty and challenges associated with unemployment and HIV/AIDS, Zambian nationals continue to encounter life with a smile on their face. Sadly around 17% of adults aged 15-49 years are HIV positive and life expectancy is only 37 years. Unemployment in Zambia is a vicious circle which includes lack of education opportunities, poor health care and lack of employable skills. With unemployment rates estimated to be at approximately 50% it is easy to see that there is a great need for education and employment in Zambia.

Government education in Zambia is considered to be free, however nearly all of these schools require hidden costs such as ‘commitment fees’ and the requirement to have a school uniform and shoes. These costs disable many caregivers from being able to send their children to school. In light of this, community schools, who offer education without any additional cost, are being built around Zambia to help educate those unable to afford government education.

Beyond Ourselves is a Christian charity working in partnership with local Zambians to help build and develop community schools in the Copperbelt region of the country. We believe that with the help of this style of education, children’s futures will be bright and hopeful and those employed through the building and running of these schools (builders, teachers, cooks etc) will also benefit.

Through a small investment each month, lives can be changed and in turn, communities will be transformed.

As part of benefiting the whole community, we are seeking to provide sponsorship to each of the teachers for them to receive a full teacher training degree. Teachers in Zambia can begin teaching with a partial teaching qualification. Each of the teachers that start teaching at our community schools are at a different place in their pursuit of the full degree. We want to ensure the best possible education for the children and also the brightest future for the teachers so helping support their education is key. It takes each teacher 9 terms to complete their full degree. This is done over the course of 3 years.

Beginning a school from it’s foundations is an exciting venture that gives us the opportunity to work with local businesses, tradesmen and suppliers. There are many costs Beyond Ourselves incurs in this process. There are classrooms and toilets to be built, kitchen supplies to be purchased, desks and resources to be invested in. The development of these schools is a process which requires investment, training and education and in turn benefits the community.

The child sponsorship programme is aimed at providing education, nutrition and basic medical care for each child sponsored. Most children in this scheme range from ages 5-15 or from nursery to grade 7. There are some older children who are still in younger grades because they have not had the opportunity to attend school until the community school in their area was built. All of the children that attend these community schools are vulnerable, all are poor and many are orphaned.

£12.50 each month provides for: - a meal each school day - a new school uniform (including a school bag and shoes) - the school teachers salaries - the cooks for the feeding program - ongoing school resources - a nurse to visit the school once a week to offer basic medical care to each child

Please note we are committed to giving all of your sponsorship money to the items listed above. None of your money from the sponsorship programme will be going towards administrative costs.*

Reg. Charity No. 802107 www.beyondourselves.co.uk

Zambian culture is one of equality. Because of this, we will not be delivering letters or gifts from sponsors to their sponsor children. Beyond Ourselves commits to sponsoring the community schools as a whole, underwriting the costs if all of the children aren’t sponsored. If some of the children get regular letters and gifts and others don’t, it means that many children will feel disappointed and hurt. It is our heart for each child to feel valued and special.

We aim to help faciliate this by having regular teams that go to Zambia and give out gifts to each child, run special activities and Holiday Clubs all of which help to reinforce that each child is special.

*We are committed to giving all of your sponsorship money to the items listed as part of the sponsorship scheme. None of your money from the sponsorship programme will be going towards administrative costs. In the event that, due to

changes in exchange rates, there is a surplus of money at the end of the year, we are committed to giving this money towards teacher training, school resources or another need in Zambia.
