SPONSA CHRISTI 551

the numbers who attended the Congress. Repre sentatives came from Belgium and Catholic Germany, as well as from all the great cities in France.

SPONSA CHRISTI At dawn she heard the rapturous song

Of seraphim, And to the dizzy heights above, All else forsaking for His love

She followed Him. He led her o'er the mountain tops

To the world's rim. "Beloved, I have far to go "

Only my love," she said " I know And followed Him.

Down in the city's crowded ways, Sordid and grim,

Where sin and sorrow burn and blight, Through many a weary day and night,

She went with Him.

To depths where sinks the human soul, Hell's very brim,

Bearing His love, His tenderness, His saving power to heal and bless,

She went with Him. And sometimes, to her tired eyes

His face grew dim; Then through a mist of tears and woe, Her Lover by His cross to know

She learnt from Him.

At last, so wearily, she came To eventide;

Ah, then she heard the seraphim, And clear above the angel's hymn

" Oh come, my bride."

And as a glory lit the skies And earth grew dim,

When peace came to the world at even, Far as the inmost heart of heaven

She followed Him. JANE SHORT.
