You have already interpreted and analyzed data. (Lessons 13–1 and 13–3)

Interpret Data

A. WEATHER The box-and-whisker plot below shows the average percent of sunny days per year for selected cities in each state. What percent of the cities had at least 56% sunny days?

Answer: Half, or 50%, of the selected cities have an average percent of sunny days under 56%.

Interpret Data

B. WEATHER The box-and-whisker plot below shows the average percent of sunny days per year for selected cities in each state. What does the length of the box tell about the data? The whisker?

Answer: The length of the box is short, so the middle 50% of the data are clustered together. The whisker at the left is longer than other parts of the plot, so the data in the lower quartile are more spread out.

A. $275

B. $120

C. $80

D. $55

A. RETAIL The box-and-whisker plot below shows the average amount spent per month on clothing. Half of the monthly expenditures on clothing are less than what amount?

A. The values of the data in the lower half are very spread out.

B. The values of the data in the upper half are very concentrated.

C. The values of the data in the middle 50% are very spread out.

D. The values of the data in the middle 50% are concentrated.

B. RETAIL The box-and-whisker plot to the right shows the average amount spent per month on clothing. What does the length of the box in the box-and-whisker plot tell about the data?

Compare Data

TREES The average maximum height, in feet, for selected evergreen trees and deciduous trees is shown. How do the heights of evergreen trees compare with the heights of deciduous trees?

75% of the deciduous trees are less than 60 feet tall. 50% of the evergreen trees are greater than 60 feet tall.

Answer: Most evergreen trees are taller than most deciduous trees.

A. The gas mileage of compact cars and sedans is about the same.

B. Most compact cars have a lower gas mileage than most sedans.

C. Most compact cars have a higher gas mileage than most sedans.

D. The median gas mileage for compact cars is lower than the median gas mileage for sedans.

CARS The average gas mileage, in miles per gallon, for selected compact cars and sedans is displayed. How do the gas mileages of compact cars compare with the gas mileages for sedans?
