CONFORMANCE TESTING AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ON A SINGLE PLATFORMThe breadth of Spirent’s LTE test coverage means that you can start with the testing you need right now, confident in a straightforward path to meet your future testing needs. Whether the starting point is CDMA/EV-DO or GSM/UMTS testing, or a dedicated entry-level LTE station, Spirent offers upgrade paths that match solution capabilities to your testing requirements. With the 8100 system, your test capabilities evolve according to your planned testing schedule.

Performance issues can affect subscriber acceptance and can impact subscriber support costs. Spirent’s LTE performance test solutions quantify device performance in the most critical areas. Beyond testing for conformance to industry specifications, the 8100 is indispensible in comparing device performance, gathering data for operational and support cost projections, or just for identifying issues that are not caught by basic conformance testing.

A single set of hardware does more than help get your device ready for operator acceptance testing. Thanks to Spirent’s cooperation with AT4 wireless, the same platform used for performance testing can be re-used for pre-conformance testing or validated industry-standard LTE conformance testing.

EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE EVOLUTION PATHSSpirent systems are designed to help you extract the most value from your investment. If you’re implementing a brand new testing station, you can start with a basic small-footprint bench-top conformance/performance testing system and add capabilities as you require them. An extremely rich set of options ensures that you can upgrade performance test cases (from Spirent) or conformance cases (from Spirent and AT4 wireless) so that your capabilities match your testing schedule.

Owners of existing Spirent systems (for either GSM/UMTS or CDMA/EV-DO testing) have straightforward paths to LTE performance testing. By designing LTE solutions to re-use as much Spirent equipment as possible, owners of existing ULTS or C2K-ATS systems, for example, are one painless upgrade away from the world’s most advanced LTE testing.

HIGHLY CONFIGURABLE, CONTROLLABLE REAL WORLD TEST CONDITIONSSpirent solutions make use of a fully-configurable, controllable environment including sophisticated Evolved Packet Core (EPC) emulation. Spirent’s award-winning eAirAccess network emulator is the most powerful and complete network emulation available for cellular device testing, including LTE and eHRPD. The resulting emulated multi-mode network is the heart of the industry’s most complete platform for mobility testing, including Inter-RAT handovers and much more. The system is capable of emulating two carriers per RAN technology (CDMA, UMTS, LTE), up to 6 carriers and 13 cells/sectors.

An integrated industry-standard SR5500 Wireless Channel Emulator adds fading and interference for real-world performance analysis of MIMO implementations, a key factor in LTE success.

No Hidden Surprises

Spirent test solutions show you what’s beneath the tip of the iceberg, so you can isolate and correct issues before deployment.

LTE TEST THEMES Spirent LTE device testing solutions include performance testing, parametric testing and testing conformance to industry standards. In order to offer solutions based on expertise in key areas, some testing themes were developed through a partnership between Spirent and AT4 wireless. LTE test themes addressed by Spirent systems include:

• LTE Data Retry – Spirent pioneered Data Retry testing several years ago, helping operators avoid network breakdowns and device manufacturers to avoid taking public blame for outages. How does a mobile device behave when it is denied service due to a failed service, gateway denial or unavailable network resource? Spirent’s LTE Data Retry testing finds out before your customers find out for you.

• LTE Data Throughput – A data-centric service such as LTE requires detailed performance testing using various transport mechanisms, RF scenarios and data client setups. Industry leaders have publicly praised Spirent’s expertise in the fine points of wireless data performance testing. Today this knowledge base is the driving force behind automated data testing on the 8100 system.

• LTE Inter-RAT – Inter-Radio Access Technology testing is a critical component of LTE testing. For example, when LTE is overlaid with CDMA services (including eHRPD functionality) the mobile must be tested to ensure proper handover operation. LTE launches have already pointed out the importance of careful mobility testing of devices.

• LTE Location-Based Services (LBS) – The last few years have proven that location-based applications are among the most popular used by wireless subscribers. There’s no question that they will continue to be important as LTE evolves. Of course, there are new complexities involved. For example, some LTE deployment bands are harmonically related to GPS signals and must be tested for interference. For another, satellite navigation is beginning to mean more than just A-GPS: some implementations will rely on GLONASS satellites while other deployments (e.g. Galileo) are just around the corner. Spirent’s undisputed leadership in Sat-Nav and LBS testing goes a long way toward ensuring the success of these vital services.

• LTE RF Performance – wireless RF performance testing is one of the areas in which Spirent has consistently proven technical and market leadership. The extension of this leadership into the LTE arena is evident in the RF performance test cases provided for 8100 system testing.

• LTE RRM Performance – Radio Resource Management is a critical system-level factor in ensuring high-quality, cost-effective LTE service delivery. While RRM conformance testing ensures that a device meets minimum RRM standards, network operators and device manufacturers want to know more. Spirent’s 8100 system delivers that information in an accurate, automated solution.

• LTE SVLTE – When LTE is an overlay to a CDMA/EV-DO network, the current de facto standard for voice delivery is Simultaneous Voice Over LTE (SVLTE). In this arrangement, voice service is deployed as a 1x service running in parallel with LTE data services. This means protecting against potential unwanted interference between the two services and testing all relevant combinations with the automated Spirent system.

• LTE RF Parametric – Most of the component elements of the 8100 system can also be run as stand-alone bench-top instruments for debugging or detailed analysis, and the E2010S network emulator is no exception. In fact, the E2010S has dual use cases as a stand-alone instrument: when loaded with eAirAccess network software, the E2010S is the heart of a completely integrated multi-RAT emulated network. When loaded with AT4 wireless’ S3110B application, the E2010S becomes a powerful touch-screen-controlled TX/RX parametric tester offering multiple parameter views on a single screen.

• LTE RF Conformance – Spirent offers a comprehensive set of RF FDD conformance test cases developed by LTE partner AT4 wireless

• LTE Protocol – Spirent’s 8100 system runs a comprehensive set of test cases called out in the 3GPP’s 36.523-1 test specification.

• LTE Radio Resource Management (RRM) Conformance – Spirent offers repeatable, accurate testing according to the 3GPP’s 36.521-3 test specification.

DATA-SPECIFIC TESTING FOR A DATA-CENTRIC WORLDQuantifying LTE data rates on live networks can be challenging, given the highly-variable nature of real-world RF environments. Insufficient device testing in this area leads to increased support costs, increased operational costs, and lost revenues due to unhappy subscribers. Spirent solutions provide fully-controllable environments and automated testing to ensure success for both operators and mobile device manufacturers.

Thanks to Spirent’s legacy as the world’s leading provider of channel emulators, Spirent test systems include realistic RF channels for testing. It’s not enough to know about data rates on a “clean path” lab setup. It’s not even enough to know what happens with a small number of limited test scenarios. Spirent data testing gives you the flexibility to customize completely realistic and controllable network and RF environments for your testing.

ADDRESSES CRITICAL LTE RF DEPLOYMENT CHALLENGESRealistic testing goes well beyond basic conformance requirements. Every LTE deployment faces a specific set of regional issues and spectrum usage issues. Released devices must not interfere with, nor be adversely impacted by, pre-existing signals.

For example, upcoming North American rollouts will be deployed in the 700 MHz band, where they need to be a good neighbor to signals such as:

• Digital TV

• Public safety bands

As another example, in a US 700 MHz spectrum block, the second harmonic sits squarely in the middle of the GPS L1 channel.

Interfering with any of these services risks the imposition of significant liabilities. In the same vein, an operator needs to know that the presence of these signals won’t affect the ability to deliver quality service at a reasonable cost.

Today’s wireless subscriber is more sophisticated then ever, and the media focuses an increasing amount of attention on wireless service and device quality. As subscribers become more and more knowledgeable in comparing cellular offerings, operators need to ensure that they can deliver fast connection and set-up times without initiating unnecessary roaming charges. Testing with Spirent is the industry’s most reliable way to make sure your deployment will be what you need it to be.
