On a Saturday in late April, I awokebefore the sun peaked its head over thehorizon. I stepped into my clothing, got
behind the wheel of my car, and drove to the Start Line of theCountry Music Half-marathon. As I moved down the road, I
turned my windshield wipers on high. The sky had opened upand rain was soaking everything below. It had been that wayfor several hours and it would be that way for several hoursmore.
As I parked my car, I gazed at the pelting rain from thewarm, dry interior of my car. For a moment, I seriouslyconsidered driving home and falling back into bed. If I did, Ithought, I'd be warm, dry, and rested before going to BethanyHills later that day for a church retreat. Had the weather beennice, I wouldn't have thought twice about running. Butcovering 13.1 miles in the cold, wet weather? The thought of
that gave me pause.
But a great change occurred within me, and it wasprecipitated by something so mundane: I began to see otherrunners walking toward the Start Line. They were wearinghats, sweatshirts, and ponchos. More importantly, they werewearing resolve, grit, and even smiles. Suddenly, I wantedtorun. I was determined to run. No matter what! I looked atthese hearty souls and said, "I'm not alone. I'll be with others. And if they can do it, then I can do it, too."
Later on, I crossed the Finish Line drenched in gladness
and gratitude as much as sweat and rain. (Several churchmembers did the same, including Becca Gossett andKatherine Hartle. For Emmie Thomas and Hope Walker, this was their first half-marathon. And unfazed by the wetconditions, Laura Wasson achieved a personal record.)
If I had to summarize my experience, I'd say this: "When Isaw the rain, I felt fear; but when I saw the other runners, Ifelt courage." Indeed, it was only when my eyes were openedto the tremendous community around me that I was able toface the rain. Friends, if this is true of the Country MusicHalf-marathon, then could it be true of the marathon of life?
If this is true of the Country Music Half-marathon, thenmight it also apply to the human "race?" I think so.
This is the last article in a series that I've written forTheSpire. For six months, I've highlighted just a few of thesmall groups that make the church so special. If you haven'tfollowed along, here's an overview: I've featured theFellowship Dinner Groups, the Tuesday Morning PrayerGroup, the Circles of Prayer, the Super Somebodies, the
Heavenly Helpers, Nashville Tools for Schools, the RestoMinistry small groups, Christian Women's Fellowsh(C.W.F.) and its many circles, the "Geezer" Group, and thWednesday Morning Men's Bible Studies. There are so manmore I could name! I didn't have time to write about t
hikers, the knitters, the stitchers, and a dozen others! Whdoes this tell us? It tells us that the church has a small groufor everyone.
Scripture repeatedly attests to the value of living Christian community. It does so at the beginning: "It is ngood for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18). It does so in thmiddle: "How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwetogether in unity" (Psalm 133:1). It does so toward the en"Be eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bonof peace" (Ephesians 4:3). The clarion call of Scripture is live in sweet harmony with other Christians. Indeed, we w
be our best only when we are in deep spiritual communityloving one another, comforting one another, praying fone another, serving one another, and holding each othaccountable to godly living. The path we are to walk supposed to be "straight and narrow," but it is not supposeto be lonely. So, let us heed the words of Hebrews 12:which says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by sua great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything thhinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Let us run wiperseverance the race marked out for us."
On that Saturday morning in April, the "great cloud
witnesses" around me was more powerful than the storclouds in the sky. Thatis what gave me the courage to crothe Start Line and the grit to cross the Finish Line. In thsame way, as we run the race of life, we have a choice: Wcan pay attention to the rain and feel fear, or we can surrounourselves with fellowship and feel courage. Which will wchoose? Friends, join a small group today. Find others this human "race" and move forward with common purposTogether, we will go the distance and one day fall into tarms of our Maker.

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before
you depart.
Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and
perfect tomorrow.
Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always
be so.
One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury
my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise
my hands to the sky and want, more than all the
world, your return.
Mary Jean Irion
I had the chance to pray with John Carpenter on Sund
before the 11:00 a.m. service. He started his prayer, "De
Lord, thank you for the joy of this day."
Most of us know how easy it is to be consumed by th
pressures of a job and its day-to-day demands and deadlineonly to have time pass by so quickly that we realize too la
that we did not fully savor life's many blessings because w
were too busy being busy.
I hope this week meets you and me with the discipline
love this day, to learn from this day and to use this day

Grace and Peace! tallu
This Dayby Tallu Quinn, TNFP Director & Outreach Minister
On Sunday, May 19, Christy Criderdirected the Children's Choir for the last time. She has directed this choir for seven years
with the help of Cathy Speers and Jamie Huling. On behalfof the music department, I would like to thank Christy, Cathyand Jamie for their dedication to our children. The following
is from Christy.
I directed from 2006 to 2013. I would like to thank my
friend and assistant for 6 of those years, Cathy Speers.
I would also like to thank tireless, loads of fun, guitar
accompanist, Jamie Huling. He walked by during the
summer of 2006 when we were in a rehearsal with no
accompaniment and said "do you need some help?" He
was there every week for 7 years after that with a smile
on his face acting like one of the kids. Cathy, Jamie and I
had as much fun as the children.
I will miss singing with these beautiful children of God
every week. But, I am excited to watch them from a pewand cheer them on.
Thanks!
Christy
