Under the fabulous direction of Jennie Pitney, several of our youth have been able to participate over the last 6 years in our youth band, Lifesong. Because many of the current perform- ers in the band are graduating, this was the last year of the current band. They have had many awesome per- formances over the years and grown as friends, musicians, and worship leaders. One of the most exciting performances was the chance to be a part of the United Methodist Church General Conference held in May in Portland. This talented group of youth performed for clergy, delegates, and United Methodists from all over the world! prayer and union with Christ, in stillness and activity. Meetings include a time of silent prayer, a reading from scripture, and a time for reflection. Adult Bible Study uses a quarterly study book based on the International Lesson Series and invites class participation as we go through each lesson. The theme for this quarter is “Toward a New Creation,” and covers the following topics: Judgment and Salvation, Genesis, Zephaniah, Psalm 8, and Romans 1; A World Gone Wrong, Book of Romans; Life on God’s Terms, Book of Romans. Bridges, a class for adults with developmental delays, meets every Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in room 110.

The church is a village - a story of thankfulness by June Hickerson

One of the first times that I realized that this was a real “village” for our family was in early April of 2000. Maddy was about 2½ years old when we had her baptized. Scott Harkness stood up with us and asked if it was our wish to have Madeline baptized and raised in the Christian faith and we answered, “We do.” Then he asked the congregation if they were willing to sup-port us and help us with this – and you answered, “We will, we will with the help of God.” Since then I’ve seen over and over again that you meant it! Maddy and Rosemary have been blessed with friends, teachers, mentors, and cheerleaders. They have been given a chance to ask questions, grow and use their gifts NOW, not sometime later. And here is the BIG thing, we are not doing this so that these kids will necessarily grow up to volunteer in the office, teach Sunday school, or sing in the choir here - and not many of these kids are going to be putting money in First Church’s offering plate (not that that wouldn’t be great!). We are investing in these kids in order to send them out into the world – what a gift for all of us. It’s going to be a little harder to send these seniors off this year. But their village is always here for them.

Congratulations are in order!

During a gathering for singles at a local café Stuart Shaw met Donna Fernley and they soon became inseparable. On Saturday, June 11, they were married by the Reverend Dan Pitney. Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Congratulations also to Brett and Sudha Landman and family! Twin boys, Ashan Lewis and Arav Edward Landman, were born on June 12!

The Oregon Mission, 1834, was considered a foreign mission station. Services where conducted there till mission headquarters were relocated to Chemeketa, 10 miles south in 1841. The parsonage, built in

the summer of 1841, housed the originally organized Methodist Episcopal Church for a short time into early 1842.

The Manual Labor

Training School

was then home to the MEC in a small chapel for ten years, 1842 to 1852. The training school was located 220 yards west of the parson-age near where the

Woolen Mills water town now stands. In 1844 the school was sold to the Oregon Institute trustees and be-came the Oregon Institute and Willamette University till it was destroyed by fire in 1872. By 1853 a small frame

church was built and dedi-cated on the corner of State and Church Streets. In only 10 years Salem grew from 500 to 3,000 and the little church was outgrown.

PAST AND PRESENT First Church heritage lives in the Oliphant Room, a beauti-ful little room to your imme-diate right as you enter the foyer of the church. PAST: Needle point dining room chairs, worn woven carpet and glass cabinetry, early 1900’s, preserved from the States St. Parsonage; the first membership book, 1858 – 1867, when membership was recorded at less than 200: Doctrines and Disciplines of the Church dating back to 1840; A Minister’s Manual: A Ready Help in Time of

Need inscribed in 1904 from Reverend MC Wire, First Church pastor from 1884 to 1987, to his son, a Methodist minister and artist who traveled to parishes throughout Ore-gon for 61 years; WWI and WWII memorial plaques; and other church history. PRESENT: New brilliant 1st Church pictures (shot with a drone) by award winning photographer Ron Cooper, a retiree of the Statesman Journal. From 1870 to 1878

the heroic and sacrificing membership struggled to turn their dream into the church we have today. The church was dedicated in March of 1878. With added wings, renovations, and loving care our sac-rificing member-ship continued and continue to pre-serve our magnificent Glory to God.

Coffee—Tea—Hot Chocolate

Last month I wrote about micro-credit and how groups of women in developing countries were learning to use it in order to gain a stable and more abundant life; helping to feed their children, clothe them, and possibly give them a chance at an education. With that thought in mind, your local United Methodist Women’s

Executive Committee has been looking at a group called Equal Exchange/Fair Trade. They sell coffee, tea, and hot chocolate as well as other items. They partner with faith communities working to make a difference. Their mission is to:

• Pay farmers the highest possible price • Work directly with farmer co-ops to help them find a caring market • Preserve fragile ecosystems around the world • Support farmer co-op development projects that go beyond business-as-usual

In the very near future members of United Methodist Women will be selling coffee, tea, and hot chocolate from Equal Exchange/Fair Trade on Sundays. The dates have yet to be decided, but we’ll eventually be sell-ing these items every month. All monies earned from the sales will go to help our missionaries locally as well as globally to help stop the trafficking of women, children, and youth and aid organizations that reach out to help women, children, and youth in crisis and in need. As you see, United Methodist Women are everywhere doing all things that God puts before us. The work is never finished, it just grows bigger and bigger and al-ways needs the helping hands of the United Methodist Women. May the peace and blessings of God be with you. ~ Barbara Alexander

Mission Café News - Missionary Katherine Parker keeps busy In a memo to the Mission Work Team, Katherine says, “I’ll attach a rough draft on a new project I’m developing for the Rukum District in Nepal for children and ado-lescents. It’s an effort whose time has come.

“The main occupation of the people in this area is agricul-ture, including animal husbandry. Sharecropping is a common prac-tice for many of the poor and landless farmers. The poorest 10% gather wild foods in the jungle just to survive. The children and ado-lescents in this district live in utter deprivation. Please donate to Ad-vance 3021568 with a note “Rukum” and it will be directed to this project.

“Sorry I can’t give more details at the moment. It’s still a very busy schedule for church visits; currently in California. I won’t have any down time until the begin-ning of August, or later. “I really enjoyed my visit to Salem First. Thanks to Doris Bennett for making so many connections for me. It was wonderful. Peace, Katherine”

Remember, your donations to the Mission Café on Sunday mornings go entirely to three overseas missionaries. Thanks to all of you!

Thank you to all who helped with hosting the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference Memorial Worship Service. The service was held in the historic FUMC Sanctu-ary, with many pastors and laity from across the conference in atten-dance. Thank you, too, to those who helped coordinate and host the luncheon for bishops’ spouses in the Dining Room, here at FUMC during General Conference.
