I LOVE CHRISTMAS−WHY? by Dr. C. Roy Stauffer, Minister of Church Life

2

The Spire is published weekly by: Woodmont Christian Church (615) 297-8563 fax: (615) 297-9319 3601 Hillsboro Road email: [email protected] Nashville, TN 37215 Kim Adair, Editor Visit our Webpage: www.woodmontchristian.org Copyright – 2012

I absolutely love Christmas! I love the sights, the sounds, the smells, the whole spirit of Christmas. I start listening to Christmas music in November. My cell phone ring tone is “Jingle Bells.” I love cold weather and especially snow on Christmas Day. (Remember, I grew up in Florida.)

I love Christmas music, Christmas trees with their lights and ornaments, outdoor lights, tinsel and garland, shopping at the mall, chestnuts roasting over an open fire, holiday food, holiday parties and open houses, gift giving and receiving, Santa Claus, reindeer, sleigh bells, mistletoe, wreaths, poinsettias, giving Christmas presents, and even listening to “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.”

I love nativity scenes, Christmas pageants, Walk Thru Bethlehem, Christmas Scriptures (especially Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, and John), Salvation Army Bell Ringers, Angel Trees, Christmas concerts, hymns, carols, and anthems, Christmas carolers, angels, shepherds, wise men, oxen, cattle, sheep, star over Bethlehem, Christmas food baskets, money anonymously given to “help someone in need” this Christmas, and, most of all, the Christmas Eve Worship Service.

Recently, I’ve found myself asking myself, “Why is it that I love Christmas so much?” More specifically, I’ve asked, “What is my favorite part of Christmas?” As a result, I’m now challenging my two men’s groups (and now challenging you who read this) to think about what is it you love most about Christmas. What is your favorite Scripture of Christmas and why? What is your favorite Christmas song, or carol, or anthem? (Mine is “O Holy Night.”) What is your favorite activity or event during the Christmas season? What is your favorite part of Walk Thru Bethlehem? What is your favorite worship

service? (Without a doubt, mine is the Christmas Eve service.)

Spend some time thinking about these things, and if you’re willing, I’d love to hear your answers. As one song goes, “We need a little Christmas.” In fact, we need a lot of Christmas! In a world where so many are discouraged and even depressed, we need the hope of Christmas. In a world that is often cold and lonely, we need the love of Christmas. In a world where there is so much tension, strife, and turmoil (even within individuals), we need the peace of Christmas. In a world where there are too many sad faces and too much angst and anger, we need the joy of Christmas. It’s not too late! You’ve still got a couple weeks left. So make sure you get a lot of Christmas this year. You’ll be glad you did. I always am.

~Roy

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed.

The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head… It certainly wasn’t convenient timing for the baby to be born. The circumstances couldn’t have been much worse. It’s easy to romanticize the story of Jesus’ birth with a docile Mary, an along-for-the-ride Joseph, and a radiant baby Jesus, but imagine for a moment what they might have been feeling on a human level. Mary and Joseph had traveled about 155 kilometers from home on foot (unless you count the donkey). Mary must have been hot and tired and feeling mighty irked to find no room in the inn. Joseph had to be stressed. Here he is with this woman, not yet his wife, and he can’t even provide a room for her where she could rest comfortably at

this most uncomfortable time in her pregnancy. How awkward! And then the pains start. The baby is going to be born, no turning back. What must Mary have been thinking? Her first child, also the son of God, was being born in a barn. Would God be angry? Certainly New-Mama Mary couldn’t have been too pleased with the circumstances. There’s no indication of family or friends around to help with the birth. Joseph must have been up to his ears in worry! The baby arrives: Perfect, peace. Joy. The pain and the confounding circumstances fall away in light of this new wonder for the world, and the angels are singing Glorias. Literally. Recently in our staff meeting, I expressed that I am having a bit of trouble feeling ready for Christmas this

Away in a Manger... by Andra Moran, Director of Music & the Arts for "The Bridge"

Little Saints by Farrell Mason, Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care

Dear Woodmont, One of my favorite Christmas treasures is my Nativity scene of French santons. Santons, translated as "little saints," are small, hand-painted terra-cotta figurines that come from the Provence region of France. The santons of Provence took their inspiration from the first living Nativity scene created in 1223 by St. Francis of Assisi. A typical Provence crèche includes 55 figures representing not only Mary, Joseph, the three Wise Men, the Christ child, and stable animals, but also the traditional characters of the Provençal village life. You can count on finding le boulanger (the baker), la fleuriste (the flower lady), the milk maid, the lavender seller, the wine maker, the fish wife, the priest, the artist, each come to see for themselves the new babe in the manger. Santons were created during the French Revolution when all the doors of churches and chapels were forcibly closed by the revolutionaries; inspiring family's to make their own stable scenes in secret, defying the threat of the guillotine. The French Nativity scene speaks so beautifully to the message of Christmas. Not only do we witness the

birth of a Savior, but we are also, whether young or old, priest or baker, invited to draw closer to the manger's edge of holiness. It promises to be a sacred meeting where the gap between the human and the divine is bridged by Love. We must never forget for whom and for what reason that baby was sent to earth. God revealed Himself in the flesh to remind us of the compassion, mercy, healing, hope, and love freely offered to all. But also by incarnating in the flesh and blood of our likeness, God revealed His hopes for humanity. Whether baker, wine-maker, wise man, shepherd, you or me, God fashioned each one of us with a hope that we would live out of our humanity as divinely as possible. God reminded us that we too, like his Son, have the ability to mend creation and love extravagantly. A visit to the manger this Christmas is a holy reminder of God's love for all of us, but it is also a call to action. God gave us a gift that first Christmas morning, a beautiful example in Jesus of how we can live and love in this world. May we each choose to leave the Stable this year by a different road just as those three Wise Men did over 2,000 years ago, changed, inspired, empowered to be better versions of ourselves, to reveal through the patina of our humanity, our spark of Divinity. Live in Hope, Farrell

(Away in a Manger… continued from page 3)

year. I have been missing the warm-fuzzy feelings of Christmas in the past couple of weeks. My best friend is going through a terrible divorce, and I feel the pain of so many in my group of friends who are struggling with their health, relationships and finances. It doesn’t feel fair or easy to shrug off the sadness that surround people all around me and call this the “most wonderful time of the year.” And yet, when I look at the story of the Holy Family through a human lens, I see that Mary and Joseph weren’t exactly in a position to call the days leading up to the first Noel a “wonderful Christmas time.” Jesus the Christ arrived in the midst of struggle, fear and plenty of worldly worry. In fact, that’s part of why he came: Jesus, our

Messiah, came to embody God’s love, and deliver peace to our planet; to every single heart. In our pain, in our fear, in our dark days, Jesus Christ is with us, steadfast and true. On December 19th, we are taking some time in the evening to find peace in the middle of this busy season. Whether your life is stressful or going just swimmingly, we hope you’ll pause with us and take time to pray for the renewing hope and joy that Christ brings to us. I think we all hope to hear the Christmas angels telling their great, glad tidings, but some days, there is nothing but the sounds of our circumstances ringing in our ears. In these times, I want my prayer to ring out: O Come to us, abide with us, Our Lord, Emmanuel. Amen. ~Andra

Special Service at Woodmont Wednesday, December 19th at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary

“Hope for the Season” A service of music, carols, reflections, and hope

Looking for a Nice Christmas Idea? Woodmont Many Gifts, One Voice Audio CD

Many Gifts, One Voice, is a compilation of 15 stylistically diverse music

performances, comprised of over 70 soloists, duets, groups and ensemble contributions from the instrumentalists and singers at Woodmont Christian Church (WCC) in Nashville, TN. It was recorded over a nine month period at six different recording studios and venues in Nashville, TN. This is a monumental effort that was conceived and implemented by Executive Producer B. James Lowry over two years ago, with the assistance, guidance and support from WCC Music Director and Associate Producer Michael Graham.

The CD costs $10* and is available for purchase at Spire Books. It will make a perfect gift for the holidays!

*The sole purpose of the creation, recording and distribution of this music CD, is to be used as an outreach utility asset, with all sales proceeds going to benefit the numerous ongoing outreach ministries at WCC.

Visitation Group Note change of time for Visitation. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. in room 105 on Monday, December 17, for hot wassail and treats. Please bring a dozen cookies. We will be packing small boxes of goodies for our shut-in members for Christmas. Please join us to help deliver these tasty gifts. Call Liz Anne Allen at 373-4013, or e-mail: [email protected] if you will be there.

Annual Trekkers Hike on Moran Road This Sunday, December 16, the Trekkers will take their Christmas hike along Moran Road. It's an easy, paved hike on one of the most picturesque roads in Middle Tennessee. They even decorate the stone fences and gates for Christmas. As an extra treat, Fran is making soup and cornbread for us. Join us between noon and one for a holiday lunch at 3813 Whitland Avenue. At one we will leave for the hike. We should be back by 4:00. So we know how much soup to make, please let us know if you plan to join us by calling at 615-297-9148 or e-mailing Cyril at [email protected].

WCC Book Club The WCC Book Club will meet on Tuesday, December 18, at 10:30 a.m. in Room 200. (Notice the change of rooms.) We will not be discussing a book this time, but will have our annual "Sweet and Swap." Bring a plate of "goodies" to share with others and bring a wrapped new or used book that you would be willing to swap. Looking forward to being with everyone! Wilson

The Nominating Committee, which is elected for a one year term, has the responsibility of selecting church members to be considered and elected by the congregation for leadership positions. This year we will elect: a Treasurer of Congregation, three Board Members-at-Large, five Elders and twenty-five Deacons.

The members of the 2012 Nominating Committee are:

Trudy Carpenter - [email protected] - #269-8946 Nicole Clayton - [email protected] - #352-7853 Marcus Crider - [email protected] - #292-5868 Claire Drowota - [email protected] - #297-2814 Jeremiah Pyron - [email protected] - #484-7603 Jane Clay Meadors - [email protected] - #665-2507 Robert Ramsey, Chair - [email protected] - #383-5728 Mart Sesler - [email protected] - #480-9085 Richmond Williams - [email protected] - #331-1061

The Committee encourages input from any congregational member for suggestions for these important offices. Please submit name(s) and reason(s) for suggestion to any member of the Nominating Committee. Please consider members you know who may fit these responsibilities and then contact any Committee member with your recommendations. The committee will begin meeting soon. Please make suggestions by January 31, 2013.

The terms of the new Treasurer, Board Members at Large, Elders and Deacons will begin on July 1, 2013.

Following are the highlights of responsibilities for Elder and Deacon:

Elder Responsibilities (3 Year Term) Serve at the Communion Table once each month. If unable to serve during assigned time, find a replacement and notify the church of office, as soon as possible of replacement. Serve Communion to those who are hospitalized, as assigned. Visit individuals on our “Special Cares” list at Christmas and other times as needed. Attend Elders meetings on a regular basis. (Currently those meetings are held periodically on Sunday evenings) Pray for those listed on the Concerns list (as printed in the Spire and Sunday bulletin each week) and for the congregation as a whole. Prayerfully consider issues or items brought before the Elders. May be asked to serve as a member of the Official Board. (Only two Elders will serve on the Board as Elder

representatives.)

Deacon Responsibilities (3 Year Term) Sign up to serve Communion in worship twice a month. Find a replacement if you are unable to serve during your assigned time. Prepare Communion once a quarter for all worship services. Attend meetings and training sessions called by the Chair of the Deacons. Operate video camera periodically Maybe asked to serve at other special events or services

More information on responsibilities and terms for all offices can be found at www.woodmontchristian.org (About Us-By-Laws)

….whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. -- Mark 10:43b-45

Advent - Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. We give thanks to all those members who worked tirelessly building

Bethlehem and those working in the shops. All our visitors who joined us for Walk Thru Bethlehem. For those people in Nashville, in the United States, and in the world who suf-

fer from hunger, shelter, and lack the essentials for life. For those people who struggle during the holiday. May this holiday bring

comfort and hope. For our shut-in members who cannot join us in church.
