Initial discovery

-Fire and/or explosion possibility

-Coverage area of spill and the intensity of any fire or explosion

-Extent of injuries, if any

Response Phases -Eliminate sources of sparks or flames

-Control the source of the discharge

-Place physical barriers or berms

-Keep contaminated water out of storm drains or sewer system

-Recover the oil or minimize its effects

-Dispose of contaminated absorbents properly

Page 15: Spill contingency plan

Determine response• Response team notified if:

-Release of toxic liquids or vapors

-Spill can be contained, but potential exists for ground water contamination

-Spill cannot be contained resulting in water or soil contamination

Techniques of control

-Diverting- Controlled movement of the material to an area where effects will produce less harm

-Diking- Use of a barrier which prevents passage of the material to an area of potential harm

-Retaining- Temporary containment where it can be absorbed, neutralized or picked-up

Spill Clean-up• Small priming spill:

-Fire guard posted at the spill until vapors have dissipated
