New Chapter Official T-shirts
This year we acquire official t-shirts in order to identify and distinguish our chapter members in
our activities. Our t-shits are show in the next sections.
Coffee Break
On October 10th we organize an activity called “Coffee Break” that opened a space for the
interested students in optics and physics to talk with some teachers of the physics faculty in a
nonacademic environment. Teachers shared their experience as students and researchers. During
the activity we offered coffee, tea and several desserts for all the participants. At the end of the
activity, we encouraged the students to join our chapter. In conclusion all the attendants enjoyed
the activity because they learned a lot from the invited professors.

1ra conferencia de o ptica cua ntica y difractiva
To this conference we invited these professors:
1. Prof. Juan Campos from Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain. He was coming to the FOCUS and we invite him first to Bogotá.
2. Prof. Carlos Viviescas from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He is one of our faculty professors.
3. Prof. Alejandra Valencia from Universidad de los Andes, Colombia. We would like to invite her because she is the head professor of the applied optics group of that important university and could be an opportunity to establish a link with her students. Unfortunately Professor Alejandra Valencia couldn't join us, but in her place came his doctoral student Jefferson Flores Gutiérrez. At the registration to the event we gave a pencil with our logo and a badge to each participant. At the coffee break we offered coffee and some cookies. At the end we gave a cocktail to the speakers.
FOCUS Latin America 2014
On November 11th Medellín hosted the first FOCUS Latin America meeting. Some of our members
were part of the academic committee which was responsible for inviting students and receiving
their applications. Also, organizing the schedule and making all the arrangements with all the
professors. We attend at the conference as organizers and contribute with a speaker with our
visiting lecturer travel grant, professor Glenn Boreman. Unfortunately, he couldn’t come but he is
coming this year on may.
This was a great opportunity for networking with the other Colombian chapters (form Medellin,
Cali, Pereira, Pamplona) and international speakers. Also, we had time to spare, off course beers
were included. At the end of the conference, we went to Guatapé and its principal attraction the
monolith El Peñol. Those places are located near Medellín.

On March 26th, 2015, we meet with the chapter members of GOA (Grupo de Optica de los Andes), the student chapter of Universidad de Los Andes in order to get know each other, to share our experiences and activities about the International Year of Light. It was a really great time because now we have the opportunity to work together in several activities this year. Also, we encourage them to continue with the process opening the SPIE Student Chapter, we told them about the opportunities and benefits of been part of this organization.
Meeting in La Florida bakery, we can see four members of GOA and three members of UNBOS.
