It wasn‘t just for the upcoming Sportster An-niversary that this project took shape the way it did: All over Europe, the trendy „Scram-bler“ style has created a re-newed interest in a more „pure“ form of motorcycling, younger customizers „scramble“ not just Harleys but a wide variety of motorcycles that also use aftermarket parts and all major events and bike shows showed an increasing number of Scrambler-type motorcycles and custom-bikes. While Harley-Davidson is careful to in-troduce motorcycles too specific to serve just one style, many model-lines serve as a base for Scrambler-type custombikes – preferably the many „Sportster“ models which especially with German customizers created a wave of new Scrambler parts. HD Wuerzburg‘s „Sporty Spice“ is a perfect example of what is possible with „Bolt-on“ type parts on a 2017 model year „Sportster“ – this is a multi-terrain motorcycle that can also make a stand on rough roads.

That is not just thanks to the cross-profiled Heidenau K60 Scout tires, mounted to Perfor-mance Machine „Virtue“ design wheels (3 x 19’’ front, 4.25 x 18’’ rear), but also the careful selection of suspension components, selected by the CCE staff: At the rear, Progressive Sus-pension 490 Sport Series shocks work with the stock swingarm – this bike is not going to win any competitions. At the front, the stock fork was swapped for an exlusive part from Italy: Otto di Cuori (ODC), based in Vanzag-hello near Milan offers numerous variations of upside-down forks for all Harley-Davidson model lines. Like a fortress of medieval times, the „Festung Marienberg“ is situated above the slope of the Main river, guarding the old bridge of Wuerz-burg/Germany, dominating the old town cen-ter of the Franconian town. Wuerzburg and its suburbs are a nice place to live – and many Harley-Customizers and CCE-clients are situ-ated here. Christoph Repp has been and still is one of the long time established specialists of the Franconian scene and his Harley-David-son dealership serves clients well beyond his „official“ radius. His popularity is also foun-ded by his many Custombike projects which have made him famous all over Germany. A

well choosen new customizer for one of the 2017 „Ride Unrivalled“ bikes in co-operation with the CCE staff, the Wuerzburg-village team underlined its creativity and excellence with a superb 883 Iron „Sportster“ that hit the road in March 2017. April and May saw the bike „in Action“ on the scenic roads along the French Meuse river near Saint Mihiel and at the Drag Power Shop in Chambley/France. Almost ex-clusively on tarmac roads for dialing in the engine, but later the „off-road“ capabilities will also be tested! Not just from its concepti-on, this is a multi-purpose bike that certainly can „spice up“ your riding experience!

What originally is intended to create „old school atmosphere“ perfectly fits the „Scram-bler“ style of „Sporty Spice“. A „Flywheel De-sign“ ignition coil relocation kit mounts the coils almost next to the spark plugs. Primary and gearbox remained stock.

Stock bodyparts of the Iron-XL were comple-tely exchanged, save for the stock oil tank: Custom Chrome Europe‘s EFI 3.3 Gallonen OEM-style tank – fitted with Arlen Ness tank cap – reserve not tested to the limit – good for about 130 kilometres of riding fun. More than the popular „Peanut“ tank, but not real-ly a touring distance for long distance rides. Rick‘s Motorcycles supplied the stylistic per-fect fitting „Dirt Track“ tailend plus base plate for the seat, which the Wuerburg Village team upholstered to a comfort seat for longer rides. Austrian V-Rod specialist „Cult Werk“ now also focuses on the Sportster model lines and ad-ded „Old School“ front fender, Sportster front spoiler and the belt guard, all easy to mount on any XL.

tion and explanation, as they are impor-tant for the operation of the motorcycle when the decision is made to add them to a Sportster custom job. Depending on one‘s point of view, the foot controls by LSL can be seen as rearward or mid mount – they do come from motorcycle sport origins and shift quick and exact, while not offering the comfort of rubber softened pegs or levers. It‘s all direct, solid and function-oriented. HD Wuerz-burg adapted the system to the „Iron“ in short time – and for fast riding, the pegs also fold up if they ever touch the ground. During the „At Night“ music vi-deo shooting, the pegs were used to mount some „Action Cameras“ for the chase scenes on the tip of the pegs, ad-ding a lot of thrill to the riding sequen-ces.

A little bit more time for getting acquain-ted is neccessary for the Performance Machine CAN-Bus switches, here in chrome housing version, which may irri-tate a lot of long-time Harley-riders that are used to the stock switches. While the pushbutton functions are the same as those on the stock switches, smaller size and – in some cases – different ar-rangements may confuse: It took some time to push the „new“ starter button rather than the right turn indicator. The new Harley-Davidson safety electro-nics make an ignition key obsolete: The electronic system recognizes when the ingnition key is close and the bike can

be activated with one button and started with another. Easy enough, if it wasn‘t for the old habits. After memorizing the position and function of 10 identical sized pushbuttons operation becomes smoother. The new look is not achie-ved without worktime: According to HD Wuerzburg‘s executing mechanic, the exchange is time consuming, as HD‘s stock CAN-Bus switch electronics need to be adapted for the new controls and resoldered into the housings. A modi-fication that most workshops also per-form when handlebars are exchanged and cables to the switches have to be extended. Surprising clear look to the traffic behind offer the two Highsider Victory Evo handlebar mirrors mounted to the tips of the Chopper Kings „BMX“ handlebar.

„AT NIGHT“ CUSTOM CHROME EUROPE 2017 Music Video Clip now online!Sometimes, the Custom Chrome Europe team is somewhat ahead of its time: For years CCE has recognized the importance of the development of the East European markets, markets that by far have not reached their possible potential – and often are as diver-sified as Spain, France and Germany are in „old“ Western Euro-pe. East European Customizers have scored at CCE‘s „European Championship“ and other bike shows with outstanding motorcy-cles of superb craftsmanship and creativity – and so the idea was born to film the 2017 Custom Chrome Europe music video clip in Czech Republic. And to meet as many East European customers and business partners as possible, as two major events would be held on the same event-site on two consecutive weekends: Euro Bike Fest and Superrally 2017 followed each other at the ATC campground in Pasohlavky in May and June, giving the CCE film team time to shoot the footage for their latest clip „At Night“.
