We all have heard the term “invest in your-self”. As true as this term is, what does it really mean? I want to introduce the

concept of “investing in leverage”. When you are in competition for a new job, promotion or contract bid, the most important aspect is not how nice you are or how well dressed you are but what do you bring to the table. Investing in Leverage simply means to do things that qualify you for the position you seek that creates an irrefutable confi rmation that highlights you as the qualifying candidate. An example in life most companies look for is a de-gree for a particular job post. Most candidates will more than likely have the degree required or in the fi eld of what is asked. Investing in leverage comes to play when an individual presents certifi cations, training and any other valuable experience beyond the average candidate that provides the grounds for highly strong consideration or even the opportunity to leverage his own salary and incentives. The rea-son why investing leverage is not commonly done is because most of the time it “COST” and takes “WORK’. Studying, reading and passing exams are not something the average person wants to do; spending hefty dollars to “hopefully pass” is not the norm. People like to depend on experience to le-verage which is not dependable. Because 10 years experience takes exactly 10 years and the leverage you have is predicated on the years you have spent, not the certifi cation you have gained which leaves room for the same individual with the same amount of time to compete. I want to encourage you to in-vest in leveraging yourself beyond the normal and position yourself for greatness.

Rose Water by June B. XuRoses are not only beautiful owers that represent love and passion, but also being widely used in cuisine and cosmetics since ancient time, i.e. Persia and China. In Tang Dynasty, court woman, Yang Guifei (Consort of Xuanzong of Tang), was well known for putting rose pedals in her bathing water and sleeping in a bed full of rose pedals. What makes rose water so magical? It hydrates, moisturizes, and brightens skin. It can be used as a tonic and antiseptic for all skin types, although people with dry and sensitive skin can use it to calm down the redness and it will leave your skin feeling supple and hydrated.

Usage:

1. Use it as a tonic to wipe your skin with a er your favorite face cleanser;

2. Spray it on your face if you want instant hydration or to refresh your skin;

3. Wet it with cotton pads and place them all over your face. Leave them on for 5 to 10 minutes to rehydrate and clam your skin, esp. in summer. Follow with your moisturizer.

Summer Blazers

Cooler temperatures allow for stylish layering but unfortunately Housto-nians don’t have much time to take advantage of that luxury. At least that was the case before TRUE summer blazers surfaced. Motivation for Success

How was life growing up? Who inspired you in your youth whether it is related to design or not?

I was born and raised in Southern California with my parents and my younger brother. I was a very ac-tive child all through school. I have always been creative in writing short stories, small novels and doing various forms of artwork. I was always very ambitious and motivated to achieve something in life. I had a great support group within my family from my parents to my grandparents. I can re-member doing drawings and giving them to various members of my family and to this day they still have them. It was always a great feeling to have so much support. Even as a young child, it’s important to have a support group who believes in you and the potential you posses. My father was always very active in my childhood helping me with various projects. I remember building model missions, painting and creating things with him that was uniquely di erent from my peers at school. My mom was an avid sewer like her mother and was always sewing or making something. I would have to say both of my parents played a major role in inspiring me to go above and beyond in anything that I did. I always remember my dad telling me that in life it was about who you know and not about what you know. I still carry that today because it was something that always stuck with me inspiring creativity.

How did you get started in design or what was the spark that started it all?

This is actually an interesting phenomenon because I never thought in a million years I would ever be a fashion designer. I remember when I was about 10; my mom bought me a sewing machine for Christmas. My grandmother bought me patterns and some fabrics along with the accessories. I think I completed one out t before I completely just tossed away the idea of ever sewing. I had no patience as a child to mess with a sewing machine. Whenever I came up with an out t I wanted my mother would make it for me. I remember getting made fun of at school because a lot of my clothes were custom made; but I never cared. I loved it. I actually became a fashion photographer in 2001 up until 2008. I began to just dabble in design starting in 2005. I was lucky enough to know someone who could sew really well. I began designing random pieces for photo shoots. e design just kind of took over and became more constant followed by the photography. In 2007, my grandma bought me an 8 dollar sewing machine at a garage sale and gave me one of her machines. I think I had about 10 dollars to my name at the time to buy some fabric to just play around. I didn’t look back. I became obsessed with creating pieces. I had to admit that I was terrible at sewing in the beginning and the rst few pieces I made were terribly done; but it didn’t discourage me. I started going to design school in 2008. I learned how to make commercial patterns, commercially sew and start my own clothing label, JaJo Couture

“ ere are struggles and there are rewards”

Motivation for Success

Tell us about your achievements and why it was worth the struggle. What is an encourag-ing word to the next up and coming.

My work has been published internationally and nationally, my label has been written about in various magazines, blogs and prestigious press. I’ve been fortunate to be asked to participate in charity functions and helping out those less fortunate. I’ve had my cloth-ing sold in boutiques and I have been blessed to participate in shows such as LA Fash-ion Week. Every accomplishment small or large is worth the struggle. It doesn’t happen overnight or by waiting to be discovered. It’s about persistence and ability. If you have the ability, develop it and push it out there. It can happen for anyone if you want your dreams to become a reality. It also helps a lot to surround yourself with positive people that share a common goal. One is a very lonely number, and it is about who you know that will help you through your career. You just never know until you go for it. ere are struggles and there are rewards that come hand in hand. If you don’t get exactly what you were going for at that moment, don’ let it get you down, it usually means there is something better around the corner that you weren’t expecting.

Lets talk about rejection, mishap and disappointment, how did you overcame those situations and who helped and motivated you at that time?

In the fashion industry there are always disappointments. It is actually worse to be ignored than to be outright rejected. I don’t know how many places or people I have contacted just trying to get my name out there that never responded. You have to nd the strength to keep going because for every-thing that doesn’t happen something usually does that will be quite surprising. My husband keeps me motivated along with several people that I have worked with through the last 4 years. When you have a support group of people that you work with, it becomes a motivational group to keep each other pressing on. It’s a hard industry to work in whether you are in design, photography, make up or even journalism. It is the persistence and the determination that keeps you going. Giving up is never an option, sometimes you have to step away and take a short breather to assess the situation but a problem is only a solution that hasn’t been discovered yet.

“It doesn’t happen overnight or by waiting to be discovered”

Page 10: SPIA Magazine Summer/Fall 2012

ANYONE can achieve greatness. ANYONE can succeed in their chosen eld. ANYONE can reach their goals and acquire their desired lifestyle. But, how many actually achieve this possibility? So as you can see, it will eventually happen, but in order for me to bring that time frame down I MUST study more hours per day, per week, and per year in order to achieve my goal. Try this equation for your own goals, follow the schedule that you make for yourself, and see what happens.

In my journey as tennis pro and personal tness trainer, I have met many beginner clients who ask how long will it take to achieve their desired goals. I’ve seen some very talented clients give it a wonderful push in the beginning, reach a plateau, discover in nite frustration, then quit. I’ve also seen others who weren’t as talented reach their goals and continue to push forward. Sometimes, it almost seemed to be with little e ort. Or was it?

A er doing some research to answer that constantly asked question of the time it takes to succeed at their goals, I found a seemingly perfect concept for my clients to live by, e 10,000 hour rule. is rule is a concept I rst saw introduced by Malcolm Gladwell, a former journalist for e Washington Post and a writer for e New Yorker, in his book Outliers. It’s a concept suggesting that in order to become pro cient or u-ent in any given eld, it will take 10,000 hours of work in that particular eld. Needless to say, the truth hurts sometimes.

Typically, when I break this news to a beginner client, they tend to get this daunting look in their eyes. “10,000 hours?! Really, is there any other way? How will I ever reach that goal?” My answer is always the same…”You will.” Seems a bit like complex simplicity, but try to think of it in regards of days, weeks, and years. I’ll use my own breakdown of this concept in regards to my new language learning endeavors.

I would like to be uent in German, French, & Spanish. I have a head start in French, but my German is a bit more begin-ner, as well as Spanish. So let’s take the German language and breakdown how long it will take according to di erent scenarios.

If I spend 4 hours per day, 3 days per week studying:12hrs per week × 52 weeks per year = 624 hrs per year10,000 ÷ 624 = a little over 16 yrs of studying to become uent!

Child Abuse is a serious is-sue and we are seeing more and more cases as time goes on. By the time we

come into contact with a child who is abused, the abuse has already happened. Most people who abuse children are ordinary people who lack coping skills. Abusers come from all socioeconomic classes, races, ethnic heritage, religious faiths, occupations and educational levels. In Texas, there are over 67,000 con-fi rmed cases of child abuse. We must all do our part to protect our children. Our children need to know that there is always a safety net within the school district. April was the month designated to high light Child Abuse. Lieutenant Jimenez and Offi cer Mercedes Martinez-Lopez in an effort to educate the community and school staff on this important subject came out to Crockett Elementary to do a presentation to the community and staff. The purpose was to educate the public on the different types of child abuse, how to recog-nize the signs of abuse and how to report it. Thanks to these offi cers more people know what can be done to prevent Child Abuse once they see it. They learned about the ex-treme measures taken by perpetrators/victims to hide the abuse and the confi dentiality in reporting abuse/neglect. It should not hurt to be a child.

SPIA believes children are truly the future. Too often who loses a child because of simply not caring; not understanding the child’s needs or not allowing a child to be accountable for their mistakes. Young individuals are blessed with so much at their hands. It’s not only the teachers that need to set the examples but the parents need to be the foundation that the child models. Sometimes situations and resourc-es play a major role in insuffi cient attention and charismatic comfort for a child but that’s where investment and selfl essness is critical. SPIA Magazine believes in the next generation and what to encourage our adults to step up and give our children the thrust, encouragement and motivation they need to ascend to their uppermost potential.

An example balance training progression:• Single-Leg Balance• Single-Leg Balance Reach• Single-Leg Lift and Chop

For the above men-tioned exercises, try doing 2 sets of 12 reps for both legs. Make sure you hold your point of compensation for 2 sec-onds before you come back to your original position.And as always, make sure you maintain optimal posture, the naval is drawn in and the gluts are contracted during each exercise. Have fun!

Balance training, although o en overlooked in the typical workout regime, is needed to improve your neuromuscular control and dynamic joint stabilization. Altered neuromus-cular control a ects the usage of the kinetic chain through-out the movement system, which o en leads to the over-loading of tissues within the body and ultimately injury.

For more advanced balance training:• Single-Leg Squat• Single-Leg Squat Touchdown• Step-Up to Balance

For the above men-tioned exercises, try doing 2 sets of 12 reps for both legs. Make sure you hold the balance position for 5 seconds before slowly lowering your leg back to the oor.

Colorectal cancer (often called simply “colon cancer”) is cancer that develops in the colon or the rectum, and it’s the third most common cancer in the U.S. Most people diagnosed with colon cancer do not have a family history of the disease however people who have this cancer in their family have a extremely higher chance of being diagnosed. What is the the Colon’s function? e colon removes water, salt, and some nutrients forming stool. Muscles line the colon’s walls, squeezing its contents along. Billions of bacteria coat the colon and its contents, living in a healthy balance with the body.

What are ways to keep the Colon healthy?Eat substantial meals; don’t nibble on small amounts throughout the day.Don’t suppress the desire to go.Ensure adequate intake of water and/or water-rich foods.Work at feeling emotionally balanced.

At what age should I start checking my Colon? Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States a er lung cancer. Th e risk for colon cancer rises with age, with more than 90 percent of cases oc-curring in people over the age of 50. However, it is important to note that colon cancer has been detected in people of all age groups
