Spherical microgranules give goodbubble form
Holland Colours in Netherlands hasmade available a blowing agentderived from azodicarbonamide.Holocell helps achieve good celldistribution when released earlyduring the injection or extrusionprocess. The additive is suitable foruse in mono- or co-extrusion PVCapplications. It is also being offered indust-free spherical microgranuleforms for accurate dosing and thereare grades for different decompositiontemperature ranges.

Expancel plans expansion ofmicrosphere production
Expancel plans to expand its plant atSundsvall, Sweden, for the productionof microspheres. These have adiameter of 30 micrometres, but whenwarmed they release gas and theplastic shell softens, causing themicrospheres to swell to a diameter of120 micrometres. A decision will bemade at about the end of 2002whether to invest several SKR 100 Min the plant. The project will involveexpanding an industrial facility in theStockvik area and then moving inequipment to match growth in themarket. Expancel is interested inmixing the microspheres with PP,PVC, or another thermoplastic andspray moulding. This should produceplastics with a foam structure whichhas the advantage over normal foamof having a more homogeneous
structure and therefore beingstronger, as well as waterproof.

Polyol for automotive seating
US-based Renosol Corp has usedpolyols from Dow Chemical Co for itsnew automotive seating products. Thepolyols, which are marketed under thename Voranol and Voractive, reportedly lower the amine emissionsthat are said to lead to windshieldfogging and discoloration of PVCparts, as well as degradation of PCcomponents in automobile interiors. The company plans to supply the newtechnology for moulded PU seatingand interior trim products for theautomotive industry, includingarmrest, headrest, console cushions, seat cushions and back.

Fluid colours add an extra touch toPVC
ColorMatrix Europe has madeavailable highly-loaded liquid titaniumdioxide colours. Only 65% liquidtitanium dioxide is needed to achieveequivalent UV protection comparedwith 100% of its rival dry product. Theliquid’s lower abrasion allows mixerblade and barrel as well as screw lifeto be lengthened over dryformulations.

Stabilisers target wood/PVC blend forprofiles
Chemson Polymer-Additive inArnoldstein, Austria, offers stabilisersfor PVC/wood extrusion. Thestabilisers, Naftosafe PHX 395C and922B, have been produced from
calcium/zinc or organic materials.Addition levels have been set at 8 phr.No coupling agent is needed by thevinyl part of the melt for processingcompounds of up to 70% wood flouror fibre. The products also do notrequire equipment tweaking.

Materials family gives PVC addedimpact strength
Rohm & Haas Plastics Additives inFrance is marketing paraloid acrylicimpact modifiers for PVC. K342 offersimpact efficiency and low fusionpromotion during extruded or injectionmoulding while KM369 is formulatedfor window profiles. K435, which issuitable at low addition levels, can beused as a processing aid for PVCfoam-core pipe and foamed profiles.

New process for CPVC
A thermal initiation aqueous phasesuspension process for CPVCproduction has been developedQingdao Haijing Chemical (Group) CoLtd, by utilising SG-7 or SG-5 typepolyvinyl chloride resin and liquidchloride as raw materials. This offerslower cost and reduced pollution.Rigid CPVC pipes produced performwell with good properties and meetheat and corrosion requirements.CPVC resins produced from SG-5type polyvinyl chloride display muchbetter impact resistance than those ofSG-7 type polyvinyl chloride whiletheir mechanical properties anddynamic stability are satisfied.Qingdao Haijing Chemical currentlyhas capacities of 110,000 tonnes/y ofcaustic soda, 80,000 tonnes/y of
