DESCRIPTION

Dear Fleckvieh friends and breeders, the data in this SPERMEX Fleckvieh catalogue are based on the latest Interbull sire proof estimation dated August 2013. This year we have selected in total 54 Fleckvieh bulls, which descend from 41 different sires and 34 dam sires to give you a wide spread bloodline variety. The progeny tested offer of Fleckvieh bulls is completed by a selection of 20 young genomic Fleckvieh bulls and 6 polled Fleckvieh sires. In the present catalogue we have only chosen the best sons of exciting Fleckvieh sires representing the top of the Fleckvieh breed! Further German Fleckvieh bulls can be found on our homepage www.spermex.de or contact us!

We, as SPERMEX, are pleased to present you our new SPERMEX Fleckvieh Top Sires catalogue 2013/2014 with the most interesting SPERMEX Fleckvieh bulls. The data in this catalogue are based on the latest Interbull sire proof estimation dated August 2013.

Dear partners breeders and Fleckvieh friends,

Since the rst release of genomic breeding values in the Fleckvieh breed two years ago we have had the chance to gain experiences with this new tool in animal breeding. In 2011, we put a rst choice of genomic young sires in our catalogue and a part of them have received daughter information with milk records meanwhile. These experiences are quite encouraging as they con rm the general pattern of genomic proofs very well. Bulls like Vanadin, Hutera, Winsler, Winral are still on top of the list and this year Mammut, Manton, Manigo, Rotglut, Donkosak and Recke turned back into the top A.I. list as progeny tested sires. Several of them are used as sire of sons.

Following up the public mind about the results and consequences of progeny tests and genomic indexes you will see that the dairy farmers world-wide are divided in two general groups: the rst group believes very much in genomic indexes and appreciates to use the latest generation of genetics to maximize breeding progress; the second group trusts more in the very reliable daughter proven bulls and even tries to get more practical information with further characteristics which are not included in the conventional breeding value estimation.

No matter which group you belong to, the present catalogue of our best Spermex Fleckvieh sires will give you a wide choice of the most suitable genetics for your intentions and environmental conditions. The selection of bulls o ers you a large number of sires with universal qualities but also specialists for some traits to balance particular weaknesses in the dairy herd. Further on, we have put emphasis on spread bloodline alternatives. 28 progeny tested Fleckvieh bulls descending from 17 di erent sires and 20 dam sires and besides 26 young genomic bulls from 25 di erent sires and 14 di erent maternal sires were selected. These bloodline options can be used even more e ciently by mixing progeny and genomic young sires according to your individual breeding goals. However, such a catalogue can only include a limited selection of top genetics out of the whole breeding program. Please let us know if you are missing some bulls. In several countries we will be able to supply you with even more bulls which t your individual requirements.

The development of gene mapping gives us new chances not only in breeding value estimation but also in the detection of genetic defects and special genetic features which couldn’t be determined before. In this scienti c eld we are just in the beginning to localize haplotypes with defects. Just recently some genetic features such as dwar sm, growth defect/short stature, trombopathy, zinc de ciency/skin disease, bovine male sub-fertility were detected and published. Several more will follow in the future. Others such as Arachnomelie have already been known for some years. The frequency of these genetic features is partly quite small. Anyhow, the development in the population should be followed up carefully and farmers will be able to avoid risk matings by the help of this additional information. But also traits as polledness, cappa-caseine and beta-caseine are genetic features which can be used as precious further information by dairy farmers.

The development in the detection of genetic features is so quick that we are not able to be always up-to-date in an annual catalogue. In order to follow up the new developments during the season please have a look at our website www.spermex.de or at www.asr-rind.de, the o cial website of ASR, the umbrella organization of the Southern German cattle breeders’ federation. Here you will nd detailed information about new genetic features, their genetic impact on the population, known carriers and useful risk management procedures.

Please note as well that the present collection includes six genomic young sires which are currently available with sexed semen: Weltenburg, Weltweit, Von Welt Pp, Silverstar, Wasabi and Marmor PS. Furthermore, we are glad to o er you the top progeny tested sire Rotglut with sexed semen.

Our complete supply of Fleckvieh sires, which we o er in all the di erent regions of the whole world, can be found on our website www.spermex.de or contact us at [email protected] each Interbull run you will nd current updated breeding values as well as news and interesting information about new bulls, progenies and dairy events on our website or on our Facebook page.

GENOMICSGENOMICS

Young Sires with genomic breeding values

Dear partners, breeders and Fleckvieh friends,

20

Two years ago the rst o cial genomic breeding values for Fleckvieh were published and we have gained a lot of experiences with the use of young bulls with genomic proofs and your demands. We are very glad that we can sum up the results during this period quite positively. Bulls like Vanadin, Mammut, Winsler, Donkosak and Rotglut were published in our 2011 catalogue with their genomic indexes and now they are listed as successfully progeny tested bulls in the rst part of the present catalogue. We can state that they could keep or even improve the gures after their daughters have calved and con r-med the genomics in practice.

However, not only the positive aspects of the bulls were con rmed by the progeny information, but also the weaknesses. This is the most im-portant feedback from the experiences made in the past two years: a.) The general breeding pattern, special bene ts and weaknesses of the young bulls can be indicated very well by help of the genomic proofs, b.) the majority of the bulls is able to con rm the genomic proofs after the progeny information has been received. This gives a lot of trust for the Fleckvieh breeders to use this category of bulls. Of course there will be also some disappointments and in the same way some positive surprises such as what we have realized with a smaller number of over-or under-estimated bulls. This, however, has happened also with bulls, who have got rst daughter information in the past. Most important is that the general tendency is correct. And after two years we can state that we are on the best way to use the genomic proofs as a quite useful tool in the Fleckvieh breeding program to proceed with the genetic progress.

In general, the technology of the genomic breeding value estimation can be considered as a real milestone in the history of animal breeding. For the rst time, it is possible to evaluate the genetic transmission of a bull directly by help of the identi cation of about 54.000 SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) in the DNA. Actually, a training sample of about 10,500 Fleckvieh bulls and the high quality and accuracy of the underlying recording system for the conventional breeding value estimation in Germany deliver high reliabilities. The present model to calcu-late the genomic breeding values has been approved by the responsible authority ICAR.

In comparison to the conventional system, where young sires had a reliability of about 36-40% based on their pedigree-index, young bulls now obtain genomic breeding values with a reliability of about 64-68% in the total merit index (gGZW) with progeny tested parents. If a part of the pedigree includes genomically tested animals a reliability of 60-64% is reached. Not only performance and type proofs reach higher reliabilities, but especially several tness traits. In addition to the direct genomic e ect the pedigree information is used further on. Therefore the published proof is the optimized genomic breeding value. The optimized genomic total merit index is expressed as gGZW. You will also nd this term on the pages of the progeny tested bulls, since the genomic breeding value is included in their proofs as well.

While selecting young bulls with genomic breeding values you should spread the choice of bulls from di erent bloodlines and prefer sires with the highest values in those traits which should be particularly improved. Please take into consideration that the proofs can still vary remarkably in single cases when the rst daughter information will be obtained.

Genomic breeding value estimation o ers the possibility to choose a wide variation of di erent bloodlines. Best o spring from so called outcross sires can be selected much more e ciently as before with the conventional progeny testing system. Pro t from this advantage and spread your selection using di erent bloodlines on the father and the mother line. This will give you a good base for the future and avoids inbreeding problems like they exist in other important breeds.

Polled genetics: Besides there are four heterozygous polled bulls (Witam PS, Irola PS, Von Welt Pp, Marmor Pp) and two homozygous polled bulls (Rally PP, Reinerbig PP) with well-balanced gures. The introduction of genomic proofs will help to develop the selection of polled genetics remarkably in the coming years.

After every Interbull run we will update our recommendation list of young genomic bulls to give you always access to the best German Fleckvieh genetics.

Please contact us for any question you have concerning genomic breeding value estimation and of course for any recommendation you need in cattle breeding generally.
