“And I said, ‘You know, Gabor,if I could think what I would do, other than architecture,it would be to write the new fairy tale, because from the fairy tale came the airplane, and the locomotive, and the wonderful instruments of our minds...it all came from wonder.’”

- Louis Kahn

The Crossroads District in Kansas City, Missouri is a very unique place. It survives on the idea that creation reigns, and that curious exploration is the only way to truly discover the world. On First Friday’s artists’ work pours out into the streets, offering a direct interaction with their creations, though lacking the ability to push their visitors to search for, discover, and create their own experience. The Donald Judd Museum seeks to re-invent the way that explorers of the Crossroads find and view artwork. Ultimately, this project offers a disruption to the way that users of the Crossroads District find the art that they adore, and something new and disrupting might be exactly what such a quickly growing grassroots district needs.

Nilou Vakil, Fall 2015

Re-imagining the way that explorers find artwork in the crossroads district, this diagram examines the concept of window shopping. The first image shows the “pass by” and the curiosity of the passer-byer

By pushing down one side of the form, an invitation is sent to pedestrians, asking them to travel around the building in search of the artwork that they saw in the previous image.

5

By repeating the motion, the entrance is created, representing the moment that a window shopper decides to enter the store.

The final drawing in this diagram represents the fulfillment of the explorer, as they have been encouraged to engage in an adventure, adding a new dimension to the way that we experience art.

public interest design

What happens when you free a louver system from the façade of a building? Does it become a maker of space? A shading device? How about an irrigation system, or even a place to sit - why not do it all?

In the midst of a food desert in Kansas City, Kansas, Big Eleven Lake sits in a state of abandonment. This project seeks to revitalize the lake, and reinvision the area around it as a healthy campus that will bring option for a better lifestyle to the large number of families that live nearby.

Matt Kleinmann, Spring 2015

Waterway Drive sits between the site and Big Eleven Lake, and for this project, will be repurposed as a public boardwalk.

The lower level will hold program that engages with the pedestrian, such as a classroom.

15

By pushing the form out over the site, the building can be used as a means of creating public space. This allows the louver system to continue from the second story to the ground, creating a shading system, water the gleaming plots, and even a place to sit.

On the second story, the grocery store overlooks the lake, and responds to the necessity to be grounded with the parking lot.

Where the healthy campus created by the Refresh Eleven project meets Big Eleven Lake, this pavilion seeks to create a public seating area while at the same time creating a space for community. This form celebrates the crutial moment when the model for a seating area becomes a model for the perfect pavilion.

A box. A standard, six-sided form that has been

time honored with the task of containing. What is

inside of a box is unique, while the exterior is al-

ways the same. This project seeks to redefine the

geometric structure of a box. Inside of the box,

the six consistent sides are held within, while the

box turns around it - and the result is a

simple yet dynamic form.
