Once upon a time there was a war between the Northern and Southern States in America. They were arguing about slaves.

In 1860 Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States of America. He defeated Stephen Douglas and John C. Breckinridge when he was running for President.

When Abraham won the president election southerner people got mad and seceded from the Union

When the southern states seceded, they tried to take over all of the federal forts in their areas.

On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces started to fire heavy cannons on Fort Sumter. In the afternoon of the following day, the

fort surrendered.

After the battle of Fort Sumter four more slave states seceded from the Union. Now there are 11 confederate states.

Northerners believed they were fighting to hold the nation together.

Southerners believed they were fighting for their independence and their way of life.

The First Battle of Bull Run was when the Union met a smaller Confederate army at a stream called Bull Run.

At the battle of bull run the Confederate army won against the Union.

Abraham Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves in some areas if they would fight in

the war with them.

Now that the Union is fighting to free the slaves, it was a turning point when the Union fought the Confederate troops at

Gettysburg.

7,000 people died at Gettysburg and 4 months after the big battle, Abraham Lincoln gave a big speech about the war’s meaning and

it was called the Gettysburg Address

In July 1863, the Battle of Vicksburg was in Mississippi and the Union won that battle and now the Union had control of the

Mississippi River.

In December 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman led the Union through Georgia and left a path of destruction 60 miles

wide and 300 miles long.

Bt early 1865, the Confederacy was near defeat. Sherman had conquered Georgia and was marching toward Virginia. In Virginia, Grants army had

pushed to within a few miles of Richmond.

During 1864 and early 1865, Grant and Lee had fought across Virginia. Then on April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.

Through the whole war nearly 60,000 of Grant’s soldiers died and 30,000 of Lee’s died. The reason Grant

won was that he could replace his fallen soldiers.

Then a few days after the civil war was over, President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth.
