![Page 5: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
When the southern states seceded, they tried to take over all of the federal forts in their areas.
![Page 6: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces started to fire heavy cannons on Fort Sumter. In the afternoon of the following day, the
fort surrendered.
![Page 7: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
After the battle of Fort Sumter four more slave states seceded from the Union. Now there are 11 confederate states.
![Page 8: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Northerners believed they were fighting to hold the nation together.
![Page 9: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Southerners believed they were fighting for their independence and their way of life.
![Page 10: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
The First Battle of Bull Run was when the Union met a smaller Confederate army at a stream called Bull Run.
At the battle of bull run the Confederate army won against the Union.
![Page 11: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Abraham Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves in some areas if they would fight in
the war with them.
![Page 12: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Now that the Union is fighting to free the slaves, it was a turning point when the Union fought the Confederate troops at
Gettysburg.
![Page 13: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
7,000 people died at Gettysburg and 4 months after the big battle, Abraham Lincoln gave a big speech about the war’s meaning and
it was called the Gettysburg Address
![Page 14: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
In July 1863, the Battle of Vicksburg was in Mississippi and the Union won that battle and now the Union had control of the
Mississippi River.
![Page 15: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
In December 1864, General William Tecumseh Sherman led the Union through Georgia and left a path of destruction 60 miles
wide and 300 miles long.
![Page 16: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Bt early 1865, the Confederacy was near defeat. Sherman had conquered Georgia and was marching toward Virginia. In Virginia, Grants army had
pushed to within a few miles of Richmond.
![Page 17: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
During 1864 and early 1865, Grant and Lee had fought across Virginia. Then on April 9, 1865, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox, Virginia.
![Page 18: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Through the whole war nearly 60,000 of Grant’s soldiers died and 30,000 of Lee’s died. The reason Grant
won was that he could replace his fallen soldiers.
![Page 19: Spencer Pannkuk Fifi Valdes Picture Book on the Civil War](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062305/56814dd6550346895dbb3d1c/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Then a few days after the civil war was over, President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth.
