INTRODUCTION

SpencerHospitalisa99-bedfacilitythatiscomplementedbytwofamilypracticeclinics,twodialysiscenters,theAbbenCancerCenter,andanewcosmeticandreconstructivesurgeryclinic.ItalsohostsaPracticeManagement/EHRpackagewhichisleasedtolocalprivateclinicsinaSAASmodel.Thehospitalblendsstate-of-the-arttechnologywiththeskillsofits600employeestodeliverhighqualityhealthcare.

THE BUSINESS CHALLENGE

Inthecourseofdailyrounds,thehospital’sdoctorsandnursesaccessavarietyofapplicationsandwebsitesviaPCsinpatientrooms.TheseincludeMcKessonParagon,HorizonMedicalImaging,andanumberofvendorandgovernmenthostedsitesprovidinghealthcarerelatedinformationandresources.

TosatisfysecurityandHIPAArequirements,theITdepartmentsetshorttime-outsforviewingpatientdatascreens.Althoughthispolicyensureddatawouldnotbevisibleforanundueamountoftime,itimpededproductivity.

“Doctorsandnurseswerefrequentlylockedoutofascreeninthemidstofapatientvisit,forcingthemtologinagain,”explainsEdMeyer,SpencerHospital’sdirectorofIT.

Inresponse,thehospitalimplementedaUSBkeysystem.Unfortunately,thesystemwasafailure.Cliniciansfrequentlylostorbrokethekeys,leadingtofrustrationandnumerouscallstothehelpdesk.Asaresult,doctorsandnursesresortedtoaccessingdataviaworkstationslocatedinthehallways.Thisprocesswascounter-productivetothegoalofsecureandconvenientbedsideaccess.

THE IMPRIVATA ONESIGN SOLUTION

AsMeyerandhisteamevaluatedpotentialvendors,theyconsideredsoftware-basedsolutionsfromCAandCitrix,andontheadviceoftheirpartner,CDW,theyincludedtheImprivataOneSignapplianceintheevaluationprocess.Overaperiodof90days,theysequentiallyimplementedeachsolutiononatrialbasisof30days.“WhentheImprivataOneSignappliancesarrived,thetidestartedtoturnintheImprivatadirection,”commentedMeyer.“ImprivataOneSign’stightintegrationwithalltypesofstrongauthenticationandapplicationswasimportant,butitwastheappliancethatsoldus.”TheITteamwasimpressedwiththeeaseofimplementation,configuration,andmaintenanceoftheappliance.“Wesimplyturnediton,enteredanIPaddressviaawebsite,andwereupandrunning,”saysMeyer.

AhandfulofdoctorsparticipatedinthetrialandchoseImprivataOneSign.“ThedoctorslovedthefactthatImprivataOneSignSSOenablesthemtosigninandautomaticallylaunchauser-specificapplication,”explainsMeyer.

Basedontheoverwhelminglypositiveresponsefromusersduringthetrialperiod,theITteamimplementedthesolutiontoeverynursingareaofthehospital.Then,workingwithanImprivataprojectmanager,theteamSSO-enablednearlyallofthehospital’sapplicationsoverafive-dayperiod.

Thehospitalisalsopleasedwiththeimpactonsecurity.“Becausecliniciansarenowcomfortablewithin-roomaccess,wenolongerhavetoworryaboutsensitivedatabeingvisibleinhightrafficareas,suchashallways,”continuesMeyer.

Furthermore,theITteamcanconfigureworkstationstoautomaticallylockafteracertainperiodofinactivity—increasingsecuritywithoutaffectingproductivity.Theautomaticworkstationlockenablesnursestoleaveasessionopeninapatientroomwithoutworryingaboutsensitiveinformationbeingexposed.Whenthenursere-enterstheroom,sheauthenticateswithherfingerprintandtheworkstationunlocks.Ifadifferentuserauthenticatesonthemachine,ImprivataOneSignSSOwillautomaticallyclosetheactivesession.“Welovethisfeature.Itpreventspeoplefromchartingunderthewrongname,”explainsMeyer.
