SPELLING RULES WHEN ADDING ING TO THE BASE FORM OF THE VB.

1.When the vb. ends in -e , this ending is dropped before ing: have- having; smile- smiling; drive- driving; hate- hating; love- loving. Exceptions: agree- agreeing; be- being; see- seeing; dye- dyeing; age- ageing; singe-singeing.

2. When the vb. ends in a consonant preceeded by a short vowel which is part of a stressed syllable,the ending consonant is doubled before adding ing: stop- stopping; fit- fitting; run- running; refer- referring; Observation:In B.E. final l in a verb is doubled when adding ing , no matter if the syllable is stressed or not: control-controlling; travel-travelling.3.If we have ie in final position ,it changes into y before getting ing: lie- lying; die- dying.

Observation: -ing can be added to a verb without affecting the spelling of the verb: play- playing; try- trying.
