lready etched firmly into the V8 Supercars history books, Jamie Whincup has the chance to scale new heights in Australian motorsport by wrapping up an unprecedented sixth championship this

weekend. The Red Bull Racing driver heads into the Plus

Fitness Phillip Island 400 with a 402 point lead with just 600 points up for grabs in the final six races of the season.

Although it is still mathematically possible for his rivals to usurp Whincup in the title race, there is a strong chance the reigning champion will complete another title defence at the Island.

If he can extend his championship lead by 48 points over his nearest rival Mark Winterbottom at the end of play on Saturday he will sew up the title.

To clinch a sixth title would set a new standard in Australian motorsport with the 31-year-old eclipsing the achievements of legendary five-time champions Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife.

Each legends in their own right, Whincup has

proved to be the master of the modern era boasting a formidable record, which has led us at www.speedcafe.com to analyse just how he compares alongside the sport’s greats.

While the focus is on Whincup, there are plenty of contenders hoping to spoil the party none more so than rival Winterbottom.

The Ford Performance Racing driver’s title hopes have taken a battering in recent weeks ensuring he will desperate to at least take the fight to the final round at Sydney Olympic Park with a strong performance this weekend.

hile he is not celebrating just yet, Jamie Whincup is poised to rewrite the history books with the Red Bull driver on the verge of becoming the first six-time

V8 Supercar champion this weekend.Once again the 31-year-old has proved

Whincup on the brink of record sixth title W

heading into the penultimate round of the season at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400.

The V8 Supercar championship winning partnership of Whincup and Triple Eight Race Engineering has worked wonders yet again, with the Melbourne driver closing in on what would be an immensely impressive sixth championship in seven years.

In fact only James Courtney has halted Whincup’s run when he took out the 2010 title for Dick Johnson Racing.

Such a triumph for Whincup would see become the most successful driver in Australian Touring Car Championship history elevating him above legendary five-time champions Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife.

Although it is mathematically possible for Winterbottom, Shane van Gisbergen and team-mate Craig Lowndes to claim this year’s crown with 600 points up for grabs, the 31-year-old could secure the title as early as Saturday evening, if he extends his lead to 450 points.

Likewise he will become champion even if he drops 102 points to second placed Winterbottom throughout the weekend.

Faced with the prospect of making Australian touring car history, Whincup says the title is not his main focus this weekend, although he admits the event could produce a historic career moment.

The triumph would be Whincup’s sixth championship in the last seven years, having achieved his first in 2008.

“I’m completely blocking out the chance of winning a sixth title this weekend,” Whincup told speedcafe.com.

“The championship is going on but it is all about myself and the team doing the best job.

“We are certainly not in the mind of collecting points or conserving, we will be belting it as hard as we can.

“The one thing that this does show is pride is worth more than anything we want to make sure we finish the year well.

“It could be a huge moment for me

absolutely it could be, but there is a lot of water to run under the bridge.

“There is always the hope there will be some champagne on ice at the end. We certainly need to execute well to have any chance of that.”

Although understandably cautious when contemplating an historic Australian motorsport achievement, it is incredibly hard to ignore Whincup’s career statistics.

After a relatively slow start to his full-time V8 Supercar career in 2003 with Garry Rogers Motorsport, Whincup has since evolved to become the man with a target on his back.

After recording his first race win in 2006 at Clipsal following a move to Triple Eight Race Engineering, he has gone on to record 86 victories, 129 podiums and five championships.

Whincup has won a quarter of the races he has started with an even more impressive podium percentage of 38.1 percent.

It is these numbers coupled with a meticulous approach to every race he enters that has been the backbone of Whincup’s success.

Comparing Whincup’s achievements against his fellow five-time champions Geoghegan and Johnson is perhaps unfair considering the way the sport has changed over the decades.

However, a comparison against Mark Skaife, the last driver to record five championships, does make for some interesting reading.

Skaife boasts a higher win and and podium percentage at a staggering 40 percent having competed in 220 races.

While Whincup has competed in 119 more races, what perhaps is most telling is the fact he has secured more pole positions, more podiums and is just four race wins behind Skaife’s total of 90 at the age of just 31. He is also just eight adrift of the all-time record held by Lowndes.

With Whincup far from calling time on his career, it will surely only be a matter of time before he goes on to surpass Skaife’s record and set a new benchmark which may never be beaten.

Despite the magnitude of his success over the previous seven years, Whincup insists he will not truly reflect on the achievements until once his motor racing career is over.

“I’m still in the heat of the battle but I’d like to think that I have got quite a long career ahead of me still,” added Whincup.

“Those numbers for me are a work in progress and it probably won’t be something I will reflect on until the end of my career hopefully that is not soon.”

Circuit Description

Originally designed in 1956, the Phillip Island circuit was re-born for the 1989 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The fast and flowing venue has been basically unchanged and hosts two international motorcycle events (MotoGP and World Superbikes) and a full program of national events each year. The circuit hosted V8 Supercars’ 500km pre-Bathurst endurance race between 2008 and 2011, before moving to a new format in 2012. The circuit was resurfaced before last year’s visit.

2013 Highlight: Garth Tander, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup scored victories to set up a three way title showdown at the final round in Sydney.

Races 33/34/35 - Phillip Island 360 I Championship Standings

Page 15: Speedcafe.com's V8 Supercars Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400

1Red Bull Racing Australia’s Jamie Whincup is facing the very real prospect of becoming the first six-time Australian Touring Car/V8

Supercar Champion at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400.The Holden driver is in sparkling form, finishing in the top seven in the last 18

races in a row with eight wins and a total of 12 podium results in that time.He holds a 402-point advantage over Mark Winterbottom coming into the round

and will become champion elect if he can extend that margin to 450 points or more come the end of Races 33 and 34 on Saturday afternoon.

Whincup would set himself apart from five-time champions Ian Geoghegan, Dick Johnson and Mark Skaife in the record books and equal Geoghegan as the only man to win four championships in a row.

2Jack Daniel’s Racing Nissan pilot Todd Kelly will make his 200th ATCC/V8SC round start at the Plus Fitness Phillip Island 400 and will become just the 11th driver in

Championship history to achieve the feat. The 35-year-old debuted at Eastern Creek in 1999 and has racked up 19 race wins, six pole positions and 28 podium finishes in his time

in the Championship.Kelly won the 2006 Phillip Island round for the Holden Racing Team (with two race victories) and finished overall runner-up there in

2002 (with Kmart Racing) and 2007 (in his final appearance with HRT).

3Ford’s ARMOR ALL Pole Position drought continues and now sits at 12 months.A total of 36 races have passed since Mark Winterbottom claimed the last ‘blue oval’ V8 Supercar Championship pole position at

Phillip Island last November. The last time a Ford failed to take a pole position in an ATCC/V8SC season was back in 1986.

4Just as the Gold Coast has been dominated by Triple Eight Race Engineering, Ford Performance Racing and Walkinshaw Racing in recent times, so too has Phillip Island.

The three dominant teams of the championship have won the last 17 races between them at Phillip Island from 2006 onwards – eight to WR, six to Triple Eight and three to FPR.

The last team outside these three to claim victory at the circuit was Stone Brothers Racing with Marcos Ambrose in 2005.

5Volvo pilot Scott McLaughlin is locked in a battle with Jamie Whincup for the ARMOR ALL Pole Award and is trying to stop Whincup from claiming his sixth pole position award from the last seven years.

The two are tied with eight poles each and six more remaining to be claimed at Phillip Island and Sydney Olympic Park.Whincup has claimed four pole positions at Phillip Island however McLaughlin has only competed there once in his short but

impressive V8 Supercar Championship career. No manufacturer outside Ford and Holden has ever taken an ATCC/V8SC pole position at Phillip Island.

6Craig Lowndes could break Mark Skaife’s record for most race wins in ATCC/V8SC history at Phillip Island this year.

The former teammates are tied with nine race wins apiece at the venue coming into this year’s event. They paired up to win the 2010 and 2011 Phillip Island 500 endurance races for Triple Eight Race Engineering.

7The Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney is keen to erase the nightmare of his trip to Philip Island last year that left him with a leg injury and a destroyed car after a massive collision with Alex Premat.

Courtney has never claimed a podium finish at Phillip Island – let alone won a race there – with a best finish of fourth. He’s also never qualified on the front row with a best of third in 2008 and then again in 2010.

No HRT driver has claimed pole position at Phillip Island since Todd Kelly in 2006.

8Three drivers – Tony D’Alberto, Alex Premat and Dean Fiore – claimed their first V8 Supercar Championship podium finish at the Castrol EDGE Gold Coast 600, bringing the total number of drivers in ATCC/V8SC

history to have achieved a podium result to 141.There are four drivers in the current full-time V8 Supercar field – Scott Pye, David Wall, Jack Perkins and Robert Dahlgren – still looking

for their first podium finish.

9Starting on pole position at Phillip Island is no guarantee that a driver will win a race. The driver starting on pole has won just two of the last 12 V8 Supercar races at the circuit.

The lowest grid position for a race winner in ATCC/V8SC history at Phillip Island is 10th – Garth Tander and Mark Skaife won the 2008 Phillip Island 500 from there for the Holden Racing Team.

Last year’s Phillip Island race winners – Tander, Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup – started third, eighth and fifth respectively.

10Swedish Volvo pilot Robert Dahlgren is the only driver in the field making his first appearance at Phillip Island in a V8 Supercar.

Both Dale Wood and Nick Percat have experience at the venue in the V8 Supercar Championship, however both are competing there for the first time as primary drivers in a single driver round – both have competed previously as co-drivers in the 500-kilometre endurance race held at the circuit between 2008 and 2011.
