What is a speech?

A speech is a formal activity where a speaker has a purpose to inform, persuade, or demonstrate an idea on a particular subject.

A speech enables a speaker to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, or ideas.

Types of Speeches

There are three main purposes for formal speaking:

to inform, to persuade, and to demonstrate.

Informing

If your purpose is to inform, or to educate, you are preparing an informative speech.

Informative speech conveys knowledge and understanding of a particular subject.

When creating an informative speech, collecting plenty of details is essential.

Examples of an informative speech:

Persuading

If your purpose is to argue for or against something, you are preparing a persuasive speech.

A persuasive speech is used to argue for or against an idea. It also challenges the audience to change their point of view on a particular subject.

When developing persuasive speech, your main job is to develop a convincing and logical argument.

Examples of persuasive speech:

Demonstrating

If your purpose is to show how to do something or to show how something works, you are preparing a demonstration speech.

A demonstration speech also known as a “How to Speech”.

When developing a demonstration speech the key is putting together a clear, step-by-step explanation.
