Our team has been hard at work on-site for over two months now. All of our project team members are focusing their efforts on completing the North parking lot, which will make way for the large emergency department addition. Over the last two weeks, the North parking lot was graded to its final elevation, and concrete curbs were added to define edges and driveways in the parking lot. Underground electrical wiring was completed, and on Thursday we began installation of the asphalt paving. After the paving is complete, the team will focus on landscaping and completing the large monument sign in the Northwest corner of the parking lot. This new sign will welcome patients and staff to the newly expanded campus.

Work also continues on the second floor of the new surgical waiting room and preadmission testing offices. After the rough electrical and plumbing was completed, crews started hanging and finishing drywall. Once this drywall is finished, painters will apply a primer and the first coat of the finish color to the walls. Crews have also been working to remove and replace old areas of corridor ceiling with new ceiling grid and tiles. This work is being completed in anticipation of future work to tie in utilities such as HVAC and medical gases.

Welcome Dan!Elzinga & Volkers would like to introduce a new member of our construction team. Dan Blamer, a 30-year veteran of hospital construction, will be taking the lead for Elzinga & Volkers as the Field Manager. Bob Glover will remain on-site through the completion of the North parking lot. We would like to welcome Dan to the project, as well as, thank Bob for his hard work bringing the parking lot to this stage.

QUALITY CONTROLOver time, codes and regulations change for the hospital building. As the Elzinga & Volkers crew uncovers older areas of the hospital, we take steps to “upgrade” the building to comply with new building codes and fire standards. While some of these code issues can be unexpected, many of them, like adding sprinkler systems, are planned and budgeted into the project.

SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETYA third party testing agent takes regular samplings of the air quality in and around our construction site because our second floor construction area is adjacent to the active medial surgical department, surgical area and other patient areas. The testing agent compares the air quality adjacent to our construction with other areas around the hospital to ensure there are no negative impacts on patient safety.

Two Week Look AheadOver the next two weeks, final landscaping and finishes will be installed on and around the North parking lot monument sign. The construction team will also create one of the unique “green” features on the North parking project, the rain garden. A rain garden is an environmentally friendly way to process rainwater and run off from the parking lot. The water is filtered through layers of soil and selected plantings to re-enter the water table clean and free of sediment.

In the surgical waiting and PAT offices, crews will finish drywall and start to install finishes. Paint will be followed by ceilings, and then flooring will be installed. Crews will also install cabinets in the waiting room to create a new coffee station. New windows are also on order for these spaces. As they arrive, the old windows will be replaced, which will be a dramatic upgrade from the original, single pane windows.

Finally, you may notice workers starting in a new location on campus. Excavation crews, fresh off the North parking lot, will begin constructing a temporary ambulance drive on the South side of the existing emergency department. This temporary drive and entrance will be used by EMS crews while we construct the new emergency department. After the project is completed, this drive will be used as a secondary service entrance to the emergency department.
