Starting with our Planning Meeting on Tuesday July 16th (each of you are invited) we will be asking questions like "One year from now, what do we want our Local CSI Chapter to look like?" If you are not able to attend our planning meeting please contact me with your vision answering this very important

“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers Harry S. Truman .” ―

By John Bossong on January 3rd, 2013

My oldest daughter brought home her first paycheck last week. The household was celebrating uncontrollably. She’s just 17, and this is her first “real” paycheck. Why was I so impressed? It wasn’t that she actually earned some money. But that was part of it. It’s what was handwritten on the bottom of the check: “Welcome to the team! Give your very best and you will be awesome here!” That’s what my 17-year-old daughter saw when she picked up her first check. Doesn’t seem like much. One simple sentence. One opportunity to make a difference. A personal note from the owner. Great leaders make it personal! It starts at the top Talk about creating a “wow” experience. If the owner [Chapter President or Committee Chair] takes the time to write a note on your first “paycheck”, how do you think the organization treats its customers? They probably have a lot of raving fans. Great leaders model the values of the organization. They live them. It’s obvious the owner values giving your best effort. It’s important. It matters. He took the time to write it down. His message is that “your best” is what’s expected. How to make leadership personal

1. Serve your internal customers (employees) [members] and they will “serve” your external customers [potential members]. They will become an extension of your vision and values. They will make decisions based on the values, not out of fear.

2. Leaders in the organization need to be role models and mentors rather than bosses.

Page 6: SPECnews - Greater Orlandogreaterorlando.csinet.org/.../FY2013-SPECnews-July-pdf.pdfSPECnews JULY 2013 P 4 Recognition & Installation Gala As indicated in last month’s newsletter,

SPECnews JULY 2013 P 6

3. Make sure that your employees [members] share the values of the organization. Hire [appoint] people who share these same values — this is crucial.

If you want a team that is unified and aligned, make leadership personal. People don’t want a job, they want a purpose. “What” they do is simply a means to achieve the higher purpose. Consider these organizations:

1. Zappos 2. Apple 3. Chick-fil-A 4. Hobby Lobby 5. Southwest Airlines

They each produce a product or service. But it’s not what they do. Each has a higher calling or purpose (“why”). You can’t achieve that without making it personal. It won’t resonate. It won’t stick. You won’t get buy-in. Make your leadership personal. It may be as simple as writing a note on the first “paycheck” of your employee [Committee Chair or Committee Member]. It may be getting out of your office and interacting every day [on a regular basis]. It certainly is living and modeling the values and principles of the organization. If you are curious, my daughter works for Chick-fil-A. What will/can you do in the new-year to make leadership personal?

Wood Veneer Tips, Barber Pole Effect Johnathan Vaughan, Territory Sales Manager-FL, GA and the Caribbean

VT Industries Inc-Architectural Wood Door Division

What are those stripes on my wood veneer doors? Why are there stripes? This can’t be right. These wood veneer door faces look like the stripes in my front lawn after mowing….. The culprit is known as the “barber pole effect.” This is a natural characteristic which is more prominent when Book Match is utilized on wood veneer faces. In order to achieve Book Match, every other veneer component is turned over to create a mirrored image along the veneer joints (similar to a book). Book Match is the most commonly specified match in the industry. When the veneer is cut from the log, the veneer will have a tight side and a loose side. When the components are book matched with the tight and loose sides adjacent to each other, they may accept stain differently or reflect light differently because of the cellular structure of the veneer. This may result in a noticeable color variation from veneer component to veneer component which creates stripes in the raw and finished form. The color variation is not considered a manufacturing defect per industry standards such as AWS/AWI, WDMA and HPVA. Wood can be a difficult material in appearance due to its natural characteristics. However, barber poling can be minimized by utilizing Slip Match. Slip Match can provide greater veneer component consistency which can help minimize color variance per veneer component. Manufacturers try to continuously improve their wood

veneer face preparations in order to minimize barber poling as well. At the end of the day, no one wants to be the concern area of a project.

WHAT IS AN AIR BARRIER? – Air Barriers control the unintended movement of air into and out of a building enclosure. Air barrier systems are comprised of a number of materials which are assembled together to provide a complete barrier to air leakage through the building enclosure. The building enclosure includes all six sides of the building and may included separations within a building. This system essentially “wraps” the building shell and ensures that it protects the building from the effects of air leakage. Air leakage can have detrimental effects on how a building functions and reduces the life span of a building. A properly functioning air barrier system provides a barrier against both the air leakage and the diffusion of air caused by wind, stack and mechanical equipment pressures. For the occupants to be comfortable, we condition the air in buildings. In summer or in cooling climates, we normally cool and dehumidify the air to a lower temperature and humidity that the exterior environment. In winter or heating climates, we normally heat and humidify the air to a higher temperature and humidity than the exterior. When this conditioned air leaks out of a building and unconditioned air leaks into a building we must then use additional energy to then condition this air. Air leakage can result in an increased use in energy costs of up to 30-40% in heating climates and 10-15% in cooling costs. Buildings which have a properly installed air barrier system can operate properly with a smaller HVAC system as the mechanical engineer does not have to compensate for a leaky building. In some cases, the reduction in mechanical equipment size and cost can offset the cost of the air barrier system. Air barrier systems also provide a barrier to pollutants entering either the building or the building enclosure. Water vapor, suspended particulates, dust, insects, smells, etc. are all pollutants which we want to keep out of either the building in general or the building enclosure. Water vapors that leaks into the building enclose (from the inside in heating climates and from the outside in cooling climates) can condensate and forms liquid water a key ingredient to corrosion and the potential development of mold. COLD FORMED STEEL PROTECTIVE COATING SUBSTITUTIONS: Architects and Specifiers should know that some steel framing companies are supplying products with alternative "reactive" or EQ coatings (non-G40 hot-dipped galvanized). They refer to these alternative coatings as "G40e", even though there is no such official ASTM coating designation. These coatings are typically applied to secondary steel, which is then substituted for G-40 coated steel on projects despite the fact there is no code definition for G-40 equivalency. "G40e" should only be used AFTER a submittal has been evaluated and approved by the architect or specifier on the job. If you do not want "G40e" to be supplied, consider adding, "No Equivalent Coatings Allowed" to your 09 22 16 specification. Click here for a PDF of the Tech Note on Equivalent Coating.

~ Institute President’s Message ~

For 65 years, CSI has been the best-kept secret in the industry. That’s all about to change as we “step up our game” in 2014! There has never been a better time to be involved with CSI. We bring construction teams together to openly share building knowledge and educate projects teams. As we begin FY-14 we will continue to gain momentum and clarity from our brand revitalization and continue to build upon the CSI experience to grow member involvement.

Goal number one is to reach more professionals with our revitalized brand and message! We are going to connect with design professionals of all types along with other allied organizations to spread CSI’s message. We will establish stronger connections promoting the value we bring for managing building information, advancing building knowledge and improving project delivery. Goal number two is to advance CSI as a leading producer of “trusted advisors” for the design and construction industry. This means we need to accelerate the demand for CSI’s trusted advisor network. As an institute, CSI is a group of respected, well-educated, experienced, and credentialed professionals bringing value through their collaboration and sharing of building knowledge. All members have the opportunity to step up their game through CSI with the best educational and certification programs in the industry. A strategic investment to become a trusted advisor through CSI will enhance member relevance to their customers with the various credentials we provide. No matter your talent, experience, or involvement, this is your CSI. It can enable you to grow both personally and professionally; it will help you develop a great network and assist you in becoming a CSI leader no matter what your background or discipline. I challenge all of us to rethink about our CSI and the impact we can provide for our clients every day through collaboration with a great network of diverse professionals that are trusted advisors to the industry. As we look to the years ahead, each one of us has the ability to stretch our boundaries, devising ways that will make an impact on construction and the next generation of leaders more significant than ever before.
