INTRODUCTIONUNPACKING THE SPEAKER

PLANNING YOUR SYSTEMBefore deciding where to best place your speakers, survey your roomand study Figures 1 and 2.

Figure 1. In this overhead view of a typical installation, satellite speakers are used to reproduce sound forthe front and surround channels. The center channelreproduces sound and dialogue. The poweredsubwoofer provides bass for effects and music.

Figure 2. This figure shows an alternative layout, whichmay be more suitable for some rooms.

HOME THEATERAEH50 BRACKET ASSEMBLY AND MOUNTING

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:Proper selection of mountinghardware not includedherein and proper assemblyand installation of brackets, including but not limited toselection of appropriateweight bearing supportand bracket use with thespecified speaker only is theexclusive responsibility ofthe customer. Manufacturerdisclaims any liability forthe selection of mountinghardware and or bracketinstallation.

a. Loosen and remove the molded nut (2) by turning it counter clockwise. Usethe supplied metal bar (5)if necessary by inserting it in one of the holes on the molded nut (2).

b. Pull the ball/shaft (3) out of the wall bracket (4).

c. Slide the molded nut (2) onto the ball/shaft (3) with threaded opening facing the ball, and thread on the metal nut (1) all the way onto the ball/shaft (3), with the nut(1)’s “knurled” surface facing away from the ball.

d. Screw on the ball/shaft (3) into the threaded insert on the back of the speaker until it is fully seated against the bottom of the insert.

e. Tighten the “knurled” nut(1) using a crescent wrench until it is firmly seated against the back of the speaker and has fully locked the ball/shaft(3) and the speaker cabinet together. Please note that once this nut is tightened, it may embed some marks on the back of the speaker where theattachment is made. However, these marks will be covered by the nut (1).

f. Mount the wall bracket (4) onto a wood stud on the wall, using #10, minimum 1 inch long, wood screws. Make surethat all 4 screws are driven into the stud andnot in drywall. If the bracket needs to be mounted on drywall, the use of properly selected and installed wall-anchors and screws is essential.

g. Holding the speaker with both hands, reinsert the ball portion of the ball/shaft (3) into the wall bracket (4).

h. Hand tighten the molded nut (2) while positioning the speaker for the intended orientation.

i. Once the orientation of the speaker is finalized, use the metal bar (5) in one of the holes on the molded nut (2) and tighten securely.

WALL-MOUNTING THE SATELLITES

SATELLITE SPEAKER CONNECTIONS

The satellites are designedto be mounted on the wall. There is a wall bracket foreach satellite speaker. Eachspeaker bracket will require(4) 1-1/2," #10 wood screws;each screw should be fas-tened to a wall stud. If a wallstud is unavailable, install ananchor appropriate for a1-1/2," #10 screw.

NOTE: The customer isresponsible for the correctselection and use of mount-ing hardware (availablethrough hardware stores)

that will ensure the properand safe wall-mounting ofthe speakers.

Step 1.Mark the positions on thewall where you would like toplace the mounting screws.

Step 2.Place bracket against walland fasten four 1-1/2," #10wood screws through thebracket’s screw holes intothe wall. If a wall stud is notavailable, use an appropriateanchor.

Step 3.Screw the post of the bracketinto the 1/4"-20 threadedinsert on the back of thesatellite. Adjust the satelliteto the desired angle andtighten the knob.

Turn Off All PowerAfter placing the speakers, you are ready to connectyour system. First, turn offall audio-system power.Use high-quality CL2/3 ratedspeaker wire for in wall wireruns. #18-Gauge speakerwire with polarity coding isincluded for outside the walluse only. For longer dis-tances, # 1 6 - g a u g e or heavierwire is recommended. Theside of the wire with a ridgeor other coding is usuallyconsidered positive polarity(i.e., +). Also, consult theowner’s manuals that wereincluded with your amplifieror receiver to confirm con-nection procedures.

SatellitesObserve polarities whenmaking speaker connections,as shown in Figure 4.Connect each + terminal onthe back of the amplifier orreceiver to the respective +(red) terminal on eachspeaker. Connect the –(black) terminals in thesame way.

Important!Do not reverse polarities(i.e., + to – or – to +) whenmaking connections. Doingso will cause poor imagingand diminished bassresponse. Be certain thatpositive and negative wirestrands are completelyisolated to avoid shortcircuits that may damageyour equipment.

For left and right front chan-nels, place one satellite tothe left and another to theright of the television, as

shown in Figure 1. Since thespeakers are magneticallyshielded, you can placethem very close to the TV

without worrying about themagnetic field distorting thepicture.

For the center channel, place the speaker directlyon top of, or below, your

television. Use includedbrackets for wall mounting.

For left and right surroundchannels, place one speakeron the left and another on

the right, to the side of orslightly behind the listeningarea. The surround speakers

should be mounted at aheight of between 4 feet and7 feet.

Since the installation ofa subwoofer can be some-what more complicatedthan installing full-rangespeakers, it is essential thatyou read this section verycarefully prior to connectingthe subwoofer to yoursystem. Should you havequestions relating toinstallation, it is advisableto call either your dealer orLeviton’s Technical SupportDepartment for advice.

The performance of thesubwoofer is directly relatedto its placement in thelistening room and how youalign the subwoofer with thesatellite speakers. Settingthe volume of the subwooferin relation to the left andright speakers is also of

critical importance becauseit is essential that the sub-woofer integrate smoothlywith the entire system.Setting the subwoofer’s vol-ume level too high will resultin an overpowering, boomybass. Setting the volumelevel too low will negate thebenefits of the subwoofer.

Here are several additionalfacts on installation that mayprove useful. It is generallybelieved that low frequen-cies (below 125Hz) arenondirectional and, there-fore, placement of a sub-woofer within any listeningroom is not critical. While intheory it is true that thelarger wavelengths ofextremely low frequenciesare basically nondirectional,

the fact is that, wheninstalling a subwoofer withinthe limited confines of aroom, reflections, standingwaves and absorptions gen-erated within the room willstrongly influence the per-formance of any subwoofersystem. As a result, specificlocation of the subwooferbecomes important, and westrongly recommend thatyou experiment with place-ment before choosing a finallocation. Placement willdepend upon your room (forexample, whether or notyour room permits place-ment of the subwoofer neareither satellite) and theamount and quality of bassrequired.
