Endangered Species Segment

Endangered species-any species of plant, animal, or other organism that is at risk of extinction because of a sudden rapid decrease in its population or a loss of its critical habitat.Reasons for extinction-Taking animals for profit, Hunting and trapping, Over harvesting, Introducing species, Destruction of habitat.Prevent extinction-Preserve habitats.PA endangered animal species-Eastern Puma:endangered due to hunting and destruction of habitat.Bald Eagle: endangered due to pesticides.Lynx:endangered due to hunting for fur and destruction of habitat.PA endangered plant species-Virginia Spiraea:endangered due to habitat loss because of alterations of stream flow patterns and other threats.Northeastern Bulrush:endangered due to destroyed/degraded habitat.

Invasive Species Segment

Native Species-A species that occurs naturally with respect to s particular area, rather than a result by humans.Invasive Species-Animals, plants, and other organisms that are newly introduced into an area from another part of the world. Invasive species cause problems in their new environment Introduced Species-A species that humans have placed in an ecosystem or community, in which it does not occur naturally.Ways Invasive Species get into US-natural pathways, Human induced pathways, Intentional Introductions, Unintentional introductions, Animal induced introductions.

Invasive Species Segment (cont)

Invasive Animal Species in PA-Asian Tiger Beetle:(Aedes albopictus)(Originated in Southeast Asia)(Feeds on blood of larger mammals)(Aggressive biters who occasionally caries diseases)Emerald Ash Borer:(Agrilus planipennis)(Larvae causes ash trees to die)(It feeds on ash trees)(Too many ash trees are dying)(originated from eastern Russia/northern China)Sirex Wood Wasp:(Sirex noctilio fabricius)(originated from Europe and most of Asia)(Feeds on pine species of trees)(too many pine trees are dying)

Reintroduced/Extirpated Species Segment

Reintroduced Species-A species released into the wild formerly inhabited by said species but has disappeared for a specific reason.Extirpated Species-A species that no longer exists in a certain country or area, but can be found else in the world. (extinct in a specific area)Reintroduced Species in PA-BeaverThe Beaver has been extirpated in PA since about 1903. They were reintroduced in about 1917.
