Thrust bearings carry loads appliedparallel to the axis of the bearingbore. They are not designed to ac-commodate radial loads.

Combination radial and thrust bearings aredesigned for simultaneously applied thrustand radial loads. Combination assemblieswill also carry pure thrust loading; however,they are not recommended for straightradial loads unless provisions are made tokeep the inner rings and outer rings in propercontact with the balls.

Radial bearings are designed prima-rily to carry loads perpendicular tothe axis of the bearing bore. Theywill also accommodate limited thrustloading or a combination radial andthrust load.

PRODUCT Features

Modified Standards

Modified standard bearings feature a standardcage and ball complement or a full ball complement,with custom engineered modifications to the otherbearing components. The exact inner and outer ringdimensions and designs can be combined with a widerange of seals, shields, special greases, special materialsand special finishes.

Modification instead of full customizing gives the userthe benefits of a fully custom bearing with lower costsand faster delivery times. Prototype lots are readilyaffordable and available for testing and evaluation.

Modified standard bearings offer the greatest valuefor your bearing dollar by offering custom bearingsat standard prices. Here are some of the many wayswe can modify standard ball bearings to fit anyapplication.

Outer Rings

Outer rings can be custom engineered to include milledslots, snap rings, track grooves, or even a variety ofplastic tires. Add to this flanges or pulley units and avariety of custom solutions are readily available.

Inner Rings

A variety of bore shapes and sizes can be customengineered to simplify mounting procedures, reduceassembly costs, and allow misalignment.

Materials and Finishes

Nice has extensive experience with a variety ofspecial materials and finishes developed to stand upto various contaminants or to take unusually hardwear. Nice bearings are made from steels of variouschemical compositions. Carburizing grades are casehardened to desired depths and hardness values forwear and breakdown resistance. High carbonchrome alloy steels are through hardened for highwear and fatigue resistance. Stainless steels areavailable for corrosion resistance and food serviceapplications. Special platings and finishes such aszinc, black oxide, and thin dense chrome are avail-able for special applications. Nice application engi-neers can assist in bearing selection for special mate-rial applications.

1600 Series Precision Ground Radial BearingsPrecision ground 1600 series bearings are specially

designed to provide a line of low cost yet high qualitybearings for adaptation to a majority of precision bearingapplications. They are made in easy to use inch dimen-sions and are recommended for medium loads and formaximum speeds in the range of 5000 rpm.

The 1600 series bearings are precision ground on allsurfaces with exceptional care given to the ball grooves.Careful heat treatment provides a uniform and exactdegree of hardness for maximum life. A ball retainer, orseparator, is used to increase the range of allowable speedsby reducing ball-to-ball contact friction. The 1600 seriesradial bearings are available open, single or doubledshielded, or single or double sealed. Double sealed anddouble shielded bearings are supplied grease packed asstandard. Open and single closure bearings can besupplied greased on request.

The 6900 series consists of a double sealed, groundbearing with an extended inner ring. It is provided withtwo set screws and a flanged housing designed for flushmounting. Bearings are supplied assembled in thehousing. Flanged and non-flanged units are availablefrom stock.

The pressed steel flanged housing provides asecure yet inexpensive means for holding the bearingin place. Although these units are not of the self-aligning type, they will accommodate a limitedamount of angular misalignment.

For less exacting applications involving light loadsand speeds up to 2500 rpm, semi-ground type bearingsmay be specified in lieu of a precision ground bearing ata cost savings. These assemblies are generally producedto order and may or may not be in stock. Contact yourNice sales representative or customer service for moreinformation.

The Nice 7500 series bearings are single rowretainer type radial bearings, similar in construction tothe 1600 series. They incorporate a highly effectivesingle lip contact seal, with metal guard. The inner andouter rings are turned from chrome steel and aftercareful heat treatment the through hardened rings areaccurately ground to close tolerances.

The 7500 series bearings are recommended for appli-cations requiring the accuracy of rotation and quietperformance of close tolerance precision grade bearings,and where a superior seal is required to retain lubricantand keep the bearing free from dust and dirt.

Normally double sealed (type DL), the 7500 seriesbearings can be produced to order with seals on one sideonly (type SL) or without seals (type NL). The Nice 7600 series bearings are single row retainertype radial bearings similar in construction to the 1600series. They incorporate a highly efficient single lip contactseal with metal guard. The inner and outer rings areturned from chrome steel and after careful heat treatmentthe through hardened rings are accurately ground to closetolerances. The inner ring is extended and contains setscrews whereas the 7500 series bearing does not.

The 7600 series bearings are recommended for appli-cations requiring the accuracy of rotation and quietperformance of close limit precision grade bearings, andwhere a superior seal is required to retain lubricant andkeep the bearing free from dust and dirt.

Normally double sealed (type DL), the 7600 seriesbearings can be produced to order with seals on one sideonly (type SL) or without seals (type NL). Double sealedbearings are grease packed as standard; however, all typescan be furnished with or without grease packing asdesired. All types are provided with a snap ring groove,with the snap ring assembled on the bearing as an option.

The 5000 series of bearings is similar in constructionto the 400 series except it has a flange on the outer ring tolocate the bearing when pressed into a tube or housing,thus eliminating the need for an external mounting device.The bearings are designed for moderate loads and speedswhere running accuracy and noise level requirements donot warrant the more expensive precision ground bearings.This series of bearings feature a full ball complementwithout a retainer. The rings are case hardened and the softsteel band on the outer ring of the unitized assembly allowsthe bearing to be pressed into a housing without the neces-sity of close housing tolerances. 600 Series Unground Thrust Bearings

The Nice 600 series is designed for moderate speeds andmedium thrust loads. These bearings utilize a full ballcomplement. Rings are cold forged from hardenable stripsteel and are carefully heat treated. These bearings may beplated or manufactured from stainless steel upon request.

The entire assembly is housed in a soft steel band whichlends itself to an easy press fit into a housing. The band alsoserves as a dust shield and helps retain the bearing lubricant.The upper ring is free to rotate in the band and has a close fitin the bore for the shaft. The lower ring is fixed in the bandand has a shaft clearance in the bore.

The methods, equations, and technical datapresented in this section allow the user to select thecorrect bearings and estimate their performance for awide range of applications. These calculations applyto Nice's selection of ground and semi-groundproduct lines, namely the 1600, 3000, 6900, 7500, and7600 series. For applications with unusual operatingconditions, Nice can provide engineering assistanceand recommend the most suitable bearing design.

Where standard bearings cannot be used, Nice canmeet the application requirements with a specialbearing design specifically tailored for optimumperformance. Contact your RBC Sales Engineer forspecial sizes, materials, application requirements,dimensions, and tolerances.

Capacity and Fatigue Lifeof Ball Bearings

The BASIC DYNAMIC LOAD RATING, C, or"dynamic capacity," for a ball bearing is that calcu-lated, constant radial load at which a group ofapparently identical bearings with a stationary outerring can statistically endure one million revolutionsof the inner ring.

The BASIC STATIC LOAD RATING, Co, or "staticcapacity," is that uniformly distributed load, whichproduces a maximum theoretical contact stress onthe most heavily loaded ball of 609,000 psi. At thiscontact stress, a permanent deformation of ball andraceway occurs. This deformation is approximately0.01% of the ball diameter in inches.

The RATING LIFE L10, is a statistical measure of thelife which 90% of a group of apparently identicalball bearings will achieve or exceed. For a singlebearing L10 also refers to the life associated with 90%reliability. Median Life, L50, is the life which 50% ofthe group of ball bearings will achieve or exceed.Median life is usually not greater than five timesthe rating life.

The relationship between rating life, load rating andload is:

with L10 = rating life (106 rev)C = basic load rating (lb)P = equivalent radial load (lb)

To obtain the rating life in hours, use:

L10 hrs = 16667/N * (C/P)3

with N= speed (rpm)

The Equivalent Radial Load is defined as:

Operating Temperature

Maximum recommended operating tempera-tures for Nice ball bearings is a function of thebearing cage, seal, and grease materials used inthe final assembly. For Nice's standard precisionproduct series (600, 3000, 7500, 7600, and 6900) themaximum recommended operating temperature is250°F. Operation at temperatures as high as 300°Fcan be tolerated intermittently. When oper-ating atthe extremes of allowable temperatures, grease maypurge out between the seal lip and the bearing innerring. If this is unacceptable for a particular applica-tion, other design arrangements might be necessary.

Nice's full complement unground series (400, 5000,500, and 600) can operate at higher temperaturesthan above, and will be limited only by choice oflubricant. However, Nice Engineering should beconsulted for application verification.

Limiting Speeds

Limiting operating speed is dependent upon thematerials used in construction and the internaldesign and finishing of the bearing. For Nice'sstandard selection of ball bearings the recommendedspeed limits are as follows:

Retainers/Cages

Nice precision ground ball bearings of standardproduction are fitted with snap-in ball riding retain-ing cages made from heat stabilized polyamide 6/6.For special applications or design requirements cagesmade of special materials can be supplied. Theseinclude pressed steel or stainless steel, glass rein-forced polyamide 6/6, and brass. Availability ofbearings fitted with non-standard cages should bechecked before ordering.

Axial Load Capacity

Deep groove ball bearings by nature of their design cancarry axial loads either alone or in combination withradial loads. Axial load capacity of standard bearings is0.5 times the Basic Static Load Rating, CO of that bearing.Smaller bearings should not be subject to a load greaterthan 0.25 times CO. Excessive axial loads can lead toserious reduction of bearing service life.

All Nice double sealed and double shielded precisionground bearings (1600, 3000, 7500, 7600, and 6900series) are supplied pre-greased 33% full with ShellAlvania #2 grease.

Shell Alvania #2 is a general purpose lithium soapgrease with a useful temperature range of -40°F to+280°F. Single closure and open bearings are suppliedslushed with a rust preservative. Misalignment

Radial deep groove ball bearings do have theability to accomodate a limited amount of angularmisalignment. The amount of angular misalign-ment that can be tolerated before adverselyeffecting bearing performance is a function of avariety of parameters. Internal radial clearance,internal design, applied loads, and the size of thebearing all play a role in determining thebearing's misalignment capability. Because ofthis, exact values for allowable misalignment arenot provided. Under normal operating condi-tions, a safe estimate of permissable angularmisalignment is usually between .0005 in/in and.003 in/in. Noise levels may increase when thebearing is operating misaligned.

Finish and Accuracy

Nice ball bearings are available in several differentfinish and accuracy grades that may be selected tosuit the functionality of a particular application.

Nice fully ground precision bearings are availablein single row radial configurations. Boundary di-mensions and internal fit-up are held to exactingtolerances by precision grinding of all external sur-faces and both ball grooves. These bearings are rec-ommended for applications requiring quiet run-ning, higher speeds, and applied loads. Normal tol-erances for series 1600, 7500, and 7600 bearings rangefrom 0.0005" to 0.001". See product tables for exacttolerances.

Nice functional precision and unground bearingsare designed for those applications where speedsand loads are moderate, and running accuracyand noise requirements do not warrant a fullyground precision bearing. Single row radial,single row angular contact, and thrust ball bear-ings can be supplied in semi-ground or ungroundaccuracy. Series 3000, 6900, 400, 5000, 500, and600 bearings are available with functional toler-ances that range from 0.005" to 0.010". See prod-uct tables for exact tolerances.

Seals and Shields

Contact seals are used on bearings to prevent solidcontaminants and moisture from entering the bear-ing while retaining the lubricant in the bearing. Nicedesign and field experience has resulted in a varietyof heavy duty and effective sealing designs.

The Nice RS1P seal, which is standard on the 1600,3000, and 6900 series bearings, is made of oil andwear resistant synthetic rubber with a steel rein-forcement. The sealing action is accomplished viainterference (deflection) of the seal lip against arecess in the inner ring shoulder. The outside diam-eter of the seal is retained in a recess groove cut intothe outer ring. The DC seal is an old style multi-partassembly consisting of a nylon seal insert held inplace with a metal shield. It is a cost effective sealused only on a few sizes and specials. The Nice DLand Super Ag seals are special high efficiency con-tact seals for heavy duty applications. They areconstructed of synthetic rubber molded to the backof a metal shroud or guard. The seal lip rides in alabyrinth groove for reduced seal drag and lowertorque against the inner ring land surface.

Bearings fitted with non-contacting metal shields areprimarily intended for applications where the innerring rotates and low drag torque is a requirement.They retain the grease at normal operating speedsand temperatures while protecting the bearing fromcontamination. Metal shields are also utilized inapplications wherecontaminants maypose a threat to theseal materials.

Recommended Shaft and Housing Fits

Proper mounting fits of ball bearings to shafts and in housings are critical to their performance. Exces-sively tight or excessively loose fits can result in premature bearing failures. Recommended fit values havebeen established which will facilitate optimum bearing performance.

All Nice single row deep groove ball bearings are designed and produced with radial internal clearance toprovide for optimum performance. Nice ball bearings are supplied with "normal" radial clearance as standard, butcan be ordered with radial clearance tighter than normal or looser than normal as a special item. AGRICULTURE Applications

The 8403-1V is another radial ballbearing cam follower. It is used toguide hay rake tine bars on agriculturalequipment. It features a spherical O.D.to accommodate any angular misalign-ment. It has two seals on one side and afully enclosed dust shield on the otherto keep dirt and hay debris out of thebearing.

The Nice 7227-4V stud mountedcam follower bearing is utilized in haytine rake applications. It employsspecially designed heavy duty seals towithstand the harsh working environ-ment. It features an internal hex socketfor ease of installation.

The Nice 8212-1TN radial ballbearing features special land ridingseals and an extended inner ring. It isdimensionally unique and is used inhay baler rakes to support the tine barshafts. It is designed to withstand theharsh environment and heavy loadsthat it encounters.

WOODWORKINGMACHINERY

The Nice 8224-TN is a fully groundradial ball bearing featuring a trackwheel configuration on the O.D. of thebearing. In addition, there is a four-point contact in the ball grooves tominimize the radial and axial play. Thisbearing is used to guide a radial armsaw along a linear track. Accuracy andrepeatability are paramount in thisapplication.

URETHANETIRE

PUMPS AND METERS

The 7473-J1 radial bearing featuresall stainless steel construction includingthe ball retainer. This precision groundbearing is used in a gas meter pumpwhere it is immersed in gasoline. Ittherefore is not lubricated. This applica-tion requires a high degree of corrosionresistance, accuracy, and reliability.

CANNING ANDBOTTLING MACHINERY

The 8317-TN is a fully groundradial ball bearing featuring a moldedurethane tire on the O.D. of the bearing.It is used in a bottle making machine toguide the bottles. The soft urethane tireminimizes handling damage due tocontact with the bearing.

COMMERCIALMOWERS

The Nice 7488-8 TNN RLD radialball bearing is unique due to itsground inch dimension bore and theground metric O.D. It is used in avariety of applications including lawnmower decks and conveyors. Itfeatures low torque seals for easierstart up and a special radial play rangefor pre-loading. The seals also have anoutboard dust shield for protectionfrom debris.

MATERIAL

The Nice 7868-5TN radial ballbearing features special low torqueland riding seals. The seals also havean outboard dust shield for protectionfrom debris. One application for thisdesign is an idler sprocket in chaindrives. It has an inch dimensionunground bore to facilitate mountingon standard fasteners. The bearinginternal geometry and outer ring O.D.are ground to precision tolerances forsmoother operation. It also featuresan extended inner ring on both sidesto accommodate mounting clearances.

The CONV3Y4-TN is a fullyground conveyor bearing for higherload ratings and ease of installation.It is used in material handling applica-tions. It features a milled slot on theO.D. for ease of installation as well asa heavy-duty seal for protection fromcoal dust, dirt, etc. The fully encloseddust shield, in addition to the solidwasher in the bore, effectively elimi-nates lubricant leakage thus allowingfor a “sealed-for-life” bearing.

The CB504-TN heavy duty radialball bearing is designed for long anddependable life in idler roller applica-tions for bulk handling belt conveyors.The specially designed hexagonal boreaccepts hexagonal shaped stub shafts ina ball and socket arrangement. Thisallows for a wide range of conveyortrough angles.

STEERING Column and Strut Bearings

The Nice 8408-1V is a full comple-ment, angular contact ball bearingused in steering column applications.It incorporates precise yet economicalsolid races, and features a groundO.D. for close-tolerance housing fits.

The 8493-V is a thrust ball bearingin which one of the rings is partiallyencapsulated in plastic. It is used infront strut mount applications of frontwheel drive automobiles. It has theadvantage of combining low mount-ing height, low weight, and reducedoperational noise.

The Nice NB543-1DCTN radialbearing is a fully ground doublesealed thin section bearing. It is usedin the headset of high-end bicycles.Because of shock loads, severe envi-ronmental conditions and the neces-sity of smooth feel for the rider, thisbearing requires a high degree ofaccuracy and reliability. Unique metalbacked nitrile seals are utilized toretain a special water-resistant greasefor a “greased-for-life” bearing.
