About White Pearl White Pearl strives to be recognized as a leader in the community, to provide quality sus-tainable housing, health and support for elder adults in the southern part of California. It is White Pearl’s wish that future residents come home and feel relaxed, stress free, that they are given space and the freedom to explore while creating a safe environment that acts as a resource to the communities in a social and sustainable demeanor. An environment that enriches physical, social and spiritual dimensions of their lives.

Client Profile Earl is a 91-year-old man suffering from advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He was a brilliant chemist and professor for over 40 years of his life before dementia slowly took over. His family is considering moving him to White Pearl. He has 2 daughters and several grand-children who will be visiting him on a weekly basis. His space needs to be designed in a way that is simple, safe and allows for freedom of mobility and a minimum of anxiety. Since confu-sion and agitation in Alzheimer’s sufferers can trigger episodes of anger, his family stresses to you that it is important to create a design where Earl cannot hurt himself.

White Pearl is an assisted living community for active adults 55 plus, located in La Jolla located in San Diego, California. 20 minutes from the University of California, San Diego, and 20 minutes from the airport. The climate is close to perfect. The sun shines almost every day, it is rarely too hot, and almost never too cool. The climate allows for design to be outside for multiple occasions. Because it’s located right by the ocean stur-dy, water resistant, plant based and Forest Stewardship Council wood materials were incorporated. San Diego has been a popular retirement community since the end of World War II. Its scenery, climate, and life-style are second to none and appeal to active adults 55+. Its bustling downtown area has a busy convention area and city parks set alongside hundreds of anchored plea-sure boats. San Diego is California’s second largest city. San Diego’s population is 1.3 million. The average real estate prices are 370,000 and averages 10 inches of rain per year.

Research Indicates;

Obstacles found in the snoezelen room and rummage areas in-clude level of access, safety, comfort and inter activity.

Design Strategies include;

Through several tours of senior communities I have found that placing the snoezlen and rummage area in or around the middle of common areas helps to create an easier level of access. Safety in snoezlen and rummage areas can be created by giv-ing the residents lighting control by dimmer switches, minimizing trailing cables and exposed plugs and a hard slip resistant floor for wheelchairs and walkers. In rummage areas it is important that any of the objects in the rummage can not cause harm to the resident. It is also important to choose objects that do not create or cause seizure or motion sickness.

Research Indicates;

Obstacles found in case studies on nurses stations and staff support areas include technology, design and ergonomics. It was also found that different kinds of work happen in the space but traditional designs try to force-fit them into one rigid configura-tion.

Design Strategies include;

Easier access to technology with ergonomic furniture, portable information devices to the “hub” for collaboration, multipurpose height adjustable workstations to support multiple types of users and provide health ergonomics for long work periods.

Research Indicates;

Obstacles found in resident quality of life often include comfort, security and sense of purpose. Ways that this can be avoided in-clude creating spaces for activities, physical activity, and reduced agitation. Research helped to build the community center which include a cafe, theater, library, gym, and billiard room.

Research Indicates;Lighting and security for residents are two factors that contribute to safety and well being.

Design Strategies include;• Developing indoor and outdoor areas that can be safely explored• Mirrors near doorways. The reflection of a person’s own face will often stop him or her from exiting the door• Black tape or paint to create a two-foot black threshold in front of door.• Monitoring devices or wrist band devices that signal when door is opened or for wandering residents• Medication cabinets in room but not in space where patient can lock themselves with cabinet• Lights that mimic daylight during dark winter • Placing louvers or trellises outside of windows to control afternoon light and shadows • LED lights allow for control of color, blue calms, white light is best, yellow or red cause agitation

Safety & Well Being

Research Indicates;Residents need to feel a sense of belonging, interaction, socialization all while feeling a sense of home.

Design Strategies include;• individual heating/ cooling controls • computers • telephones • nintendo’s or wii• base cabinets utilized as wall • fully equipped kitchens • washer/dryer • small dining rooms with consistent seating • technology for music to play throughout space • inconspicuous rails • bathroom doors that are highly visible with readable sign

Comfort and Sense of Choice and Control

Research Indicates;Following universal design strategies allows for the ability to be mobile, active and reduce confusion within the space through wayfinding strategies. ADA, the American Disability Act was established for persons with disabilities. Libraries unable to meet these standards must provide alternative methods of providing accessibility.

Design Strategies include;ADA• Mill work, and built ins at heights in compliance with ADA, adjustable work-stations, tables, and treatment table, 5’ perimeter for wheelchair access to mill work and furniture/ workstations, hand rails, 7’ corridors, ADA plumbingUniversal Design • counter tops at an easily accessible height • side by side refrigerator • pullout drawers with handles not knobs • faucets with single lever, non-slip flooring on showers/tubs, toilets that are at a comfortable height, support bars in bath and showers, roll in showersAnthropometrics • less difficulty using a bathtub with a seat than a roll-in shower without ase-at, most items should be stored between the knuckle and shoulder heights so that elderly users are not subjected to bending and overreaching demands Wayfinding• central point strategy of finding one’s way by sticking as much as possible to central, well- known parts of the building• floor strategy is to find one’s way to the floor of the destination first

Ease of Use

Research Indicates;Staffing in nursing homes has a high turnover which can cause high stress levels in residents who build such relationships with staff.

Design Strategies include;• task seating should be curved to fit the shape of our bodies • multipurpose stations with stable platform, adjustments often translate into surfaces and elements that move • Spaces and rooms that provides a retreat for staff

Research Indicates;Warm colors include red, orange and yellow. These warm colors evoke emo-tions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility. Cool colors include blue, purple and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indiffer-ence. Elderly persons may have difficulty distinguishing between colors. They need three times the amount of light to see, but are sensitive to glare. Colors such as red, green, yellow or blue will appear muted to the elderly eye.

Design Strategies include;• choosing fabrics under a yellow lens• choosing appropriate tones • eliminating gray • contrast between horizontal and vertical surfaces• best use of daylight• different layers of light; task light, bedside light, ceiling lightt

Earl will benefit from my memory care space plan in multiple ways. The open space plan has very few walls and doors which allow will help Earl for less confusion or agitation. Through research I found that spaces with consistent seating are needed for memory care patients. The furniture plan allows for multiple seats which will be good for not only him but for his visiting family. I also learned that memory care patients benefit from indoor and outdoor areas that can be safely explored. In Earl's space plan I provided an enclosed balcony from his bed-room that allows for safe exploring. Also included for Earl's ease of use is mill work and built ins at height in compliance with ADA, a five foot perimeter for wheelchair access to mill work and furniture, 7 foot corridors and hand rails. For Earl's safety his family has provided him with a bracelet which will alarm when Earl wanders to unsafe areas such as the stairway doors. In the kitchenette I provided Earl with a side by side refrigera-tor, pullout drawers with handles, and a single lever faucet. For Earl's assistance in the bathroom I included toilets at a comfort-able height, support bars and non-slip flooring for the roll show-er.
