The Numbers Behind the NumbersThe$data$we$publish$is$straight$forward.$$One$practice$we$employ,$is$often$disputed$is$the$

use$of$a$common$tester$hybrid$at$a$fixed$every<other,$third,$or$fourth$entry$in$each$of$our$plots.The$function$if$the$tester$is$to$first$reveal$and$secondly$to$adjust$for$variability.$$

Our$justification$for$using$the$tester$method:$$We$know$every$location$used$for$a$plot$site$induces$variability$of$performance$that$is$due$to$the$heterogeneity$of$the$site$itself$and$not$due$todifferences$of$hybrids$being$tested.$Using$the$adjustment$method$is$an$attempt$to$remove$as$much$variability$as$possible.$$Yet$there$are$still$some$limitations$no$model$is$perfect,$but$we$believe$this

model$removes$as$much$variation$as$possible.

The$Method:$$First$the$tester$average$is$calculated.$$Secondly$the$yields$of$$the$tested$hybrids$are$expressed$relative$to$the$yields$of$the$bracketing$tester$strips$as$a$percentage.$$When$the$tester$frequency$is$every$other$one,$each$of$the$2$bracketing$tester$is$weighted$equally;$$with$atester$frequency$of$every$third,$the$nearby$tester$is$weighted$2/3$and$the$far$is$weighted$1/3;$

when$the$tester$frequency$is$every$fourth$strip,$the$nearby$tester$weight$3/4$and$the$far$tester$isweighted$1/4,$for$the$middle$tested$entry$in$a$set$between$testers,$the$two$testers$are$weighted.$

The$tester$average$is$multiplied$by$the$relative$performance$of$each$entry$(%$of$tester)$too$produce$the$Adjusted$Yield.

Ranking:$$It$refers$to$how$each$entry$ranked$in$Adjusted$Gross$Income$per$acre$(using$the$adjusted$yields).
