» The April-June 2017 palay production at4.15 million MT grew by 11.72 percent fromthe 2016 output of 3.73 million MT. Harvestarea stretched to 947 thousand hectaresfrom previous year's record of848 thousand hectares. However, yield perhectare stabilized at 4.38 MT from theprevious year's level (Table 1.1).

o Boosts in production registered acrossregions except Central Luzon,CALABARZON and Eastern Visayas.

o Increase in harvest area was attributed to adequate water and availability of highyielding varieties (HVY) seeds and fertilizer support from DA andLGUs during thecropping period.

~ Accordingly, palay production for January-June 2017 reached to 8.57 million MT,12.06 percent above the 7.65 million MT outputin 2016. Harvest area increased by 8.63percent, from 1.93 million hectares in 2016 to2.10 million hectares this year. Yield perhectare improved by 3.16 percent, from 3.96MT in 2016 to 4.09 MT in 2017 (Table 1.2).

o Possible increments in outputs areforeseen in Cagayan Valley, CentralLuzon, MIMAROPA, Western Visayasand SOCCSKSARGEN.

o Probable harvest area may increase dueto more plantings in the previous quarterresulting from favorable weather andgovernment inventions.

~ Based on farmers' planting intentions, theOctober-December 2017 forecasts onproduction and yield per hectare may surpasstheir 2016 levels by 3.58 percent and5.92 percent, accordingly. On the other hand, probable harvest area may decline by2.21 percent from the previous year's level(Table 1.4).

o Probable upturns in production areanticipated across regions exceptMIMAROPA, Western Visayas, NorthernMindanao, Davao Region, Caraga andARMM.

o Farmers are optimistic to have higher yielddue to good weather condition andgovernment interventions on seed andfertilizer support.

o The perceived decrements in production are anticipated in MIMAROPA, WesternVisayas and ARMM. This is to be brought about by movement of cropping from dryspell/drought in the previous year.

o Considerable increments in harvest areas were noted in Northern Mindanao,SOCCSKSARGEN and ARMM due to sufficient soil moisture content during plantingperiod. Likewise, availability of hybrid and modern open pollinated variety (OPV) seedsfrom DA and LGUs in Northern Mindanao motivated farmers to utilize more areas.

~ The January-June 2017 production of corn may escalate to 3.70 million MT, 30.70 percentabove the 2.83 million MT output in 2016. Harvest area may rise from 0.90 million hectaresto 1.10 million hectares, or by 21.84 percent. Yield per hectare may increase from 3.14 MTin 2016 to 3.37 MT in 2017, or by 7.28 percent (Table 2.2)

~ The July-September 2017 forecasts onstanding crop indicates lower production andharvest area by 1.23 percent and7.80 percent, from their respective levels in2016. On the other hand, yield per hectare mayimprove by 7.12 percent from 2.75 MT level in2016 to 2.95 MT (Table 2.3).

o Possible production and harvest area in mostregions may decline due to frequent rainfallduring growth stages of the crop exceptCagayan Valley.

o Cagayan Valley may have substantialincrements in production and harvest areadue to early plantings.

Technical Notes

Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop duringthe reference period. For palay and corn, harvest area refers to the actual area harvested/tobe harvested during the reference quarter.

Estimates and forecasts of production and harvest area of palay and corn are generatedfrom the Quarterly Palay and Corn Production Survey (PC PS) of which there are four surveyrounds in a year, that is, January, April, July and October. The following are the data -takenfrom these surveys:
