Centennial Celebration Highlights
CENTENNIAL LION: Beginning now, through December 31, 2016, we will be accepting
nominations for the Centennial Lion. The nomination form is attached. There will be one
Centennial Lion from each District. Nomination forms will be distributed to each club in the
next month, so be thinking about that special lion that deserves recognition. Each Centennial
Lion will be presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship (or progressive depending on their
current status). Please submit your nominations to your District Coordinator or Multiple
District Coordinator no later than December 31, 2016.
CENTENNIAL LEO: Beginning now, through December 31, 2016, we will be accepting
nominations for the Centennial Leo. There will be one Centennial Leo from the State. Nomination
forms will be distributed in the next month, so be thinking about that special leo that deserves
recognition. The Centennial Leo will be presented with a Bill & Dorothy Wunder Fellowship. Please

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: Yes, a party worthy of 100 years is being planned and will
take place at the 2017 State Convention.
2017 INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION: There will be ten (10) $50 stipends available to those attending the
2017 International Convention on the bus. If the bus trip doesn’t come to fruition, then the ten
$50 stipends will be awarded to be used for travel to the convention. The stipends will be paid
after attendance at the Convention is verified. More information coming soon.

LEGACY PROJECT: We are asking each club in the State to have a legacy project. Each club that has a legacy
project and reports on that project, will receive a Legacy Club patch for their club banner.

The club has decided on a fundraiser of raffling off a
bronze lion statue. The statue valued at over
$1,000 was donated to the club by PDG’s Joan &
Gerald Snyder. The raffle tickets will be available
for $5 per ticket. The PDG Club hopes to raise at
least $1,000 to go towards an un-named Melvin
Jones Recipient.
The drawing for the statue will be at the district
convention in March. Tickets will soon be available

KANSAS CENTENNIAL LION
NOMINATION FORM
Every Lion in each district in MD 17 will be able to nominate someone that
they feel encompasses the Lions Motto, “We Serve”, and should be chosen
as the Kansas Centennial Lion for their district. The nomination forms will
be reviewed by a panel made up of the Centennial District Coordinators,
District Governors, and GMT/GLT District Coordinators. The nomination
forms will have the name and club blacked out to ensure that voting is based
on the Lions accomplishments. The panel will choose one lion from each
district as the Kansas Centennial Lion.
ACCOLADE
Each district Centennial Lion will be presented with a Melvin Jones
Fellowship at the 2017 State Convention. If the chosen Lion is already a
Melvin Jones Fellow, they will be presented with a progressive Melvin
Jones Fellowship.

News from Madison Lions Club
The club sponsored the Fall Fest. On October 29th in
cooperation with the MainStreet Mommas . The club
is planning a fish fry and perhaps look into a steak
night in the spring. The club is completing their
calendar fundraiser. A pin collection from the late
PDG Bob Fry with discussion on what to do with
them.

Coffeyville Daylight Defenders Lions Club In spite of a rainy afternoon, the turn out for the first Hot Dogs and History at the Aviation Heritage Museum was a great success. Over one hundred visitors to the museum enjoyed hot dogs, chips and drinks provided by the Coffeyville Daylight Defenders Lions. Visitors were able to tour the museum for free, however, donations were accepted to help support the museum.

2016 Kansas State Fair Screening Report
Lions International President, Bob Corlew’s, theme “New Mountains to Climb” was exhibited by the Kansas Lions at the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation’s (KLSF) 2016 Kansas State Fair Screening Service Project. With the addition of two booth spaces at this fair the KLSF was able to provide the traditional adult vision, hearing, blood pressure, blood sugar screenings, and children’s vision screenings and add booth space for two additional service providers Saving Sight (the Lions Eye Bank for most of Kansas) and “Cares” Canine Assistance Rehabilitation Education Services (service dogs).
The KLSF sincerely appreciates the assistance of the many Lions throughout the state of Kansas, including district governors, vice-district governors, and 2nd vice district governors to help make this year’s State Fair Screening Project a great example of Lion’s service. There were a total number of 3,920 individuals screened at the 2016 Kansas State Fair. This included screenings for “Field of Vision” 535 screened – 69 referred for professional evaluation, “Visual Acuity” 389 screened – 188 referred for professional evaluation, “Hearing” 1152 screened – 343 referred for professional evaluation, “Blood Pressure” 1,492 screened – 164 referred for medical evaluation, “Blood Sugar” 1,376 screened – 183 referred for medical evaluation, and “Children’s Vision Screening” 1,329 screened – 222 referred for professional evaluation.
It is not about numbers but helping individuals and parents recognize potential medical and visual challenges that could impact the future of the ones being screened. This is a service made possible by the Kansas Lions Sight Foundation’s Mobile Screening Unit (MSU). At this year screenings there was one individual with a blood sugar of 510 and another who actually came to our screenings to have his blood sugar checked was unable to ambulate from the booth before being assisted by the fair’s EMS services.
This project would not be able to be a success without the Kansas Lions and the nursing instructors and students from Newman University, Hutchinson Community College practical nursing department and registered nursing program, and the Salina Technical College medical assistant program. It takes approximately ten to twelve volunteers per shift, two shifts per day for ten days. In this number we need four medical professionals per shift or students supervised by a licensed professional to provide the blood pressure and blood sugar checks.
We want to emphasize our sincere gratitude to all who assisted with this Lions Service Project.

Ark City Early Birds Lions Club
1930 Modal A Jalopy Winner Announced
The 1930 model a ford lions party car drawing in which we had only 200 tickets was won by Jonathan Frankenberg of Arkansas City Kansas. He had ticket number 129, and was the purchaser of the last three of the 200 tickets. See - it sometimes pays to be a trailer instead of a leader.
Thanks to all who bought a ticket - all monies are used by the lions for eyeglasses and exams and other public service activities.
MSU State Fair Workers
6 Lions +1 guest nurse accompanied the Ark City Early Birds Lions Club to the Hutchinson State Fair. We were honored to be a part of this day and helping the community and their needs.
Back to School
Many Elementary Children from Roosevelt School are
more colorful this fall with their new water colors,
thanks to We Early Birds and their wonderful teacher,
Amy Lawson. Again, thanks for thinking of us as we
hear how dedicated teachers are, taking work home,
spending their own money for their classes' supplies,
etc. We love getting around to the local schools with
all kinds of
goodies.
That makes
life easier
for the kids.
"Lion in the Park" chairperson, Lion Maryann
Schneider. A limestone lion in a local park in Arkansas
City has been a great sight to many children over the
last 6 or maybe 10 decades, maybe more? Children in
the park would ride the lion like a horse. Prior to that it
was said the lion was crafted for a lady to step down
from her carriage. Currently our adopted lion stays
nearly unnoticed in the park. Our club is looking to
repair the chipped or deteriorated limestone form. Yes,
we've adopted the "Lion in the Park". We'll share
before and after pictures once this lengthy project
materializes.

Sight Screening at Labette County School District
On Tuesdays September 27th, Vision screening started at Mound Valley, Edna and Bartlett and Altamont Grade Schools. On Wednesday, screening moved to the Meadow View Grade School and High School Freshmen PE Classes. And on Thursday, screening concluded at Meadow View preschool and finished up at the high school. More than 1400 students were screened.

in downtown Chicago for the Centennial Convention.
Please get your reservations in early as there are only
25 rooms reserved for Kansas at $156 a night until
January 13.
Thank you to the 16 people who signed up with
interest in the bus to Chicago. It would not be
feasible to try to run a bus with such few passengers.

On September 17, 2016 at the USA/Canada Forum held in Omaha Nebraska, Lions Clubs International President Chancellor Bob Corlew presented Lion Chris Bauer from the Humboldt Lions Club a Degree of Bachelors from the USA/Canada Leadership Forum’s Lions University. Lion Bauer is the first Lion from Kansas to earn this degree. To complete the Bachelors program, Lion Bauer completed through webinars and on-line instructions the ten required courses and six elective classes in addition to attending a USA/Canada Forum.

Yates Center Lions Club held their annual steak fry on
September 8th. In addition they hosted a Zone 9
meeting. Members from the following zone clubs were
in attendance: Burlington, Colony, Garnett, Westphalia,
and Yates Center. In addition Lions from Parsons,
Humboldt, Augusta, and Eureka were in attendance.

Did you know that since its founding in 1968, our Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has given out more than US$950 million in grants? That is an incredible amount of money. What is even more incredible is that we have improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people throughout the world.
We could not have done that without you! Did you also know that LCIF relies entirely upon donations from Lions and friends? Yet, only six percent of Lions make an individual donation to LCIF each year. You read that correctly: only six percent of Lions give an individual gift to LCIF. To those who have already made a donation this year, thank you.
If every Lion gave only US$100 this year, we could raise US$140 million. A single US$100 donation can provide measles vaccinations for 100 children, a week's worth of food for a family after a disaster, life skills training for a classroom of students through Lions Quest, or a loan to an entrepreneur whose business will support an entire family. That donation can, in fact, change someone's life.
For clubs who donate as little as US$50 per member, LCIF will award special Club Giving Banner Patches. Please encourage every member of your club to support LCIF this year. Help us to help those who need us most.

For the 2015-16 Lions year, MD-17 reached 69% of our goal for LCIF fundraising. This year our goal per district has been set
by LCIF.
Each district’s goal is $30,000, but it is attainable! In order to reach our goal, we are asking that each Lion make a
contributing member donation of $20.
For the $20 contribution, you will receive the contributing member bronze pin, and your contributing member donation is
now eligible to go toward a Melvin Jones Fellowship!
For a $25 contribution, you will also receive the Measles initiative pin.

The Best Way to Observe the Centennial
The other day I heard a sports commentator talk about a great athlete’s legacy. The player
was an all-star every year and a probable Hall of Famer, but the commentator remarked he
needed to win this championship to cement his legacy. We hear that word a lot—legacy. It’s
part of discussions about artists, elected officials and innovators. Somehow there is some-
thing greater than the sum of our accomplishments. There is an identity or a lasting effect
we can create that transcends what we have done and serves as a capstone, an obvious high
point.
We have the opportunity to make the Lions Clubs International (LCI) Centennial more than just a celebration. We have an oppor-
tunity to leave a lasting impact on our communities. Centennial Legacy Projects are a great way for your club to cement its value
and leave a lasting impression. It’s a way for your club to celebrate the Centennial while reminding the community of your vital
contributions.
Clubs worldwide have eagerly embraced this initiative. More than 4,000 Legacy Projects have been reported to LCI on MyLCI. Clubs
are undertaking smaller initiatives such as making park benches or doing larger projects such as building clinics and expanding li-
braries. Many of the projects are innovative and ingenious such as the donation of the Kensington Lions in Prince Edward Island in
Canada of a dozen 16-channel transmitters/receiver sound units to a school to enhance learning.
With three levels to choose from, there’s an opportunity for every club to get involved:
•Level 1 Legacy Projects will raise your community visibility. Post new Lions signs, donate park benches, dedicate a statue or pro-
vide a park fountain.
•Level 2 Legacy Projects are about giving back to the community. Give a gift that lasts—refurbish a park, build a footbridge over a
heavily-traveled road, fund resources for the visually impaired, or donate a vehicle to a community organization that needs one.
•Level 3 Legacy Projects are large-scale efforts. These include building a clinic, expanding a library or school, equipping a hospital or
developing a training center to teach new work or life skills.
So connect with your community by planning a Legacy Project during our centennial. Make your centennial celebration unforgetta-
ble by giving your community a lasting gift that Lions and community members will never forget.
