FAULT FINDING PRINCIPLE

Fault find ing is carried out using conventional RENAULT tools:

the XR25, NXR and a special bornier Elé. 1506 for checking the continu ities of the w iring looms.

This bornier is connected in series between the vehicle wiring loom and the passenger compartm entconnection unit wh ose fun ction it interru pts.

Fault find ing is still based on :

- the use of fault bargr aph s.

- forced comman d mod es.

- acknowledgement of driver comm and s.

FAULT FINDING SECTION

is comp rised of the following sections:

62 Air cond itioning

This fault find ing is id entical to that for other JE0X mod els with the exception of the locationof air conditioning relay 474 wh ich is contained in th e passenger comp artmen t connection

unit BII.

82 Imm obiliser

This fault finding and the p aram eters are identical to that for other JE0X mod els, with the

exception of the location of the tracks.

83 Instrument p anel

This fault finding is entirely new.

it deals with the w arning lights in the form of fault charts.

87 Passenger Comp artmen t Connection Un it BII

This fault finding is entirely new.

CONVENTIONAL FAULT FINDING

The following fault find ing sections d o not change:

- Pneumatic self-levelling susp ension.

- Injection.

- ABS.

- Autom atic Transm ission.

- Rad io.

IMPORTANT:

When replacing an instrument panel or a BII passengercompartment connection unit, the mileage is retained inthe BII passenger compartment connection unit and instru-ment panel memory.

When connecting the new component, the mileage in thememory will be displayed automatically on the instrumentpanel or in the BII passenger compartment connectionunit.

Do not carry out fault finding using a substitutecomponent from another vehicle as the higher mileage

will be memorised and will be displayed on both vehicles.

IMMOBILISER

Passenger compartment connection unit (BII) 82

GENERAL

The ESPACE is equipp ed w ith a passenger

compartm ent connection u nit (BII) allowing m a-

nagement of:- the immobiliser by means of a key recognition

system (known as the CODED KEY engine im-

mobiliser system).

- door locking and unlocking by means of a ra-

d iofrequen cy PLIP (TRF).

The imm obiliser

A coded electronic unit (operating w ithout a bat-

tery) wh ich is ind epend ent of the remote control

function is integrated in the head of each key forthe vehicle.

When the ignition is switched on , an antenna ring

located arou nd the ignition switch interrogates

and captu res the code emitted by the key and

transmits it to the passenger compartm ent

connection u nit.

If it recognises the code, vehicle starting is au tho-

rised.

The immobiliser is activated a few seconds after

the key is removed from the ignition sw itch and is

indicated by flashing of the red w arning light lo-

cated on the instrument p anel.

If there is a key r ecognition system fault, a security

code can be entered either:

- using the door locking button (it doe not mat-

ter wh ich side) the red imm obiliser warn ing

light , or

- u sin g th e XR25.

This code will be given to the technician (on re-

quest) by the local assistance network (dep end ing

on the coun try, for example Delta Assistance on

08 00 05 15 15 for France, NVSR for the UK by fax

only).

NOTE:

This system is fitted to p etrol and diesel vehicles.

Petrol and direct injection diesel vehicles (exam-

ple: F9Q) the imm obiliser function is performed

by the injection compu ter.

Diesel vehicle with coded solenoid valve: the im-

mobiliser fun ction is performed by a coded sole-

noid valve (on the injection pu mp ).

IMPORTANT: ESPACE vehicles equipped with

F9Q, L7X engines have a special injection compu-

ter which will only function if coded.

Door locking / unlocking

The radiofrequency with wh ich the vehicle is

equipped is used for:

- locking or unlocking of the opening elements,- management of the courtesy lights (time de-

lay).

The radiofrequency code is a rolling code and will

therefore be d ifferent each time th e PLIP is p res-

sed to preven t possible copying.

When replacing one of the PLIPs, a resynchronisa-

tion pr ocedu re will therefore have to be carried

out.

• It is no longer possible to unlock the doorswith the d oor locking button w hen the re-

mote control has been used to lock the doors.

• Door locking using the PLIP is indicated by two

flashes of the hazard war ning lights wh ilst un -

locking of the door s will be ind icated by one

flash of the hazard war ning lights.

IDENTIFICATION

On th ese vehicles the identification num ber on

the key head s consists of eight characters begin-

ning w ith the letter F for the radiofrequencyPLIPs.

IMMOBILISER

Passenger compartment connection unit (BII) 82

DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM

With this system, the im mobiliser is activated ap-

proximately 10 seconds after th e ignition is swit-

ched off (show n by flashing of the red immobiliserwarning light).

It is comp osed of:

• two special matched dual function key heads

equipped with:

- a coded electronic chip allowing control of

the immobiliser (1),

- a radiofrequency remote control electronic

chip (2) allowing control of locking or un -

locking of the opening elements and timing

of the courtesy lights.

DIM8205

• An antenna ring (B) located around the igni-

tion switch, equipp ed w ith an electronic chip

responsible for transmitting the code from the

keys to the passenger comp artmen t connection

unit BII (C).

NOTE : This antenna ring is not coded.

IMPORTANT: Do not force the ring or its

connector when rem oving or refitting the two

half-cowlings so as not to dam age the coil

wires.

If these wires are dam aged th e key will not be

recognised w hen the ignition is switched on.

11300M2

• A passenger compartment connection unit BII

(C) located in the fuse box.

It ensures the following functions:

- the decoding of the key signal from the an-

tenna ring,

- management of the immobiliser system by

sending a code to the injection compu ter

(petrol or d irect injection d iesel) or to th e co-

ded solenoid valve for diesel vehicles (except

direct injection) to auth orise vehicle starting,

- control of the red imm obiliser wa rning light,

- unlocking and locking of the opening ele-ments,

- timed illumination of the courtesy light.

When it is replaced, check the configuration.

- The central door locking button is blocked in

open p osition when the d oors have been

locked using the PLIP.

- Locking of the doors using the PLIP is indica-

ted by tw o flashes of the hazard warning

lights wh ilst un locking of the door s will be

indicated by one flash of the hazard warn ing

lights.

IMPORTANT: If one of the opening elements is

not closed, or a switch is faulty when the doorsare locked using the PLIP, the hazard warning

lights w ill not operate.

• A red immobiliser warning light is located on

the instrum ent panel and is used to:

- signal that the immobiliser system has been

activated,- manually enter the security code,

- signal a system fault for diesel vehicles

equipped with a coded solenoid valve (ex-

cept d irect injection).

- indicate that the key has not been recogni-

sed,

- signal that the resynchronisation mode for

the d oor locking PLIP has been entered .

• An injection warning light (on p etrol or direct

injection d iesel vehicles) which allows a fault onthe following systems to be signalled:

- in ject ion,

- immobiliser system, engine running (flashes

und er deceleration and at idle speed).

• A coded solenoid valve for diesel vehicles (ex-

cept d irect injection).

• A door locking button, located on the roof

console, wh ich also allows the security code to

be entered (it does not matter w hich side).

IMPORTANT:

When replacing a passenger compartment connection unitBII, the mileage is retained in the instrument panel memo-ry.

When connecting the new component, the mileage in thememory will be displayed automatically on the instrumentpanel.

Do not carry out fault finding using a substitutecomponent from another vehicle as the higher mileagewill be memorised and will be displayed on both vehicles.

OPERATION

When th e immobiliser system is operational (ap-

proximately 10 second s after cutting + after igni-

tion feed ), the red imm obiliser warn ing lightflashes (slow flashing; 1 flash/ second ).

After switching on th e ignition, the antenn a ring

analyses the code from the key and tra nsm its it to

the passenger compar tment connection u nit BII.

If the code is recognised by th e passenger

compartm ent connection un it BII, it send s a code

to the injection compu ter (petrol or direct injec-

tion d iesel) or to the coded solenoid valve for die-

sel vehicles (except injection d irect) via the coded

line and extingu ishes the red imm obiliser warn inglight (after ap proximately 3 seconds).

At this p recise mom ent, one of several situat ions

may arise:

• The injection computer or the coded solenoid

valve has no r eference code in its mem ory:

→ the code sent to it is stored in its mem ory.

• The injection computer or the coded solenoid

valve has a reference code in its memor y:

→ The code sent to it is compared w ith its refe-

rence code.

→ If the two codes match, the comp uter u n-

locks the injection or th e coded solenoid

valve and au thorises the engine to be star-

ted. When the ignition is switched on, the

injection w arning light (petrol or d irect in-

jection d iesel) and the imm obiliser warning

light illum inate for a few seconds and extin-

guish, thereby ind icating that th e system is

operating correctly.

→ If the tw o codes do n ot match, the system

remains locked to prevent th e engine being

started. When th e ignition is switched on,

the injection w arning light (petrol or d irect

injection d iesel) illuminates for a few se-

cond s and extinguishes whilst the red immo-

biliser wa rning light flashes (rapid flashing).

Vehicle starting is not au thorised.

NOTE: To ensure that th e system operates correct-

ly, no object (example : keyrings) shou ld be inser-

ted between the key and the antenna ring.

IMPORTANT: When the battery has a low charge,

the drop in vo ltage caused by operating the star-

ter motor may reactivate the immobiliser. If the

voltage is too low, the engine cannot be started,

even by pushing the vehicle.

REPLACING A KEY HEAD

The coded chip in th e key head or PLIP is faulty:

• Order a replacement key head u sing thenu mber in th e faulty key head (eight

alphanumeric characters starting with the

letter F for radiofrequency PLIPs) and carry ou t

the resynchron isation p rocedure for the PLIPs.

• If the customer requires the fault to be repaired

imm ediately (2nd key u navailable), th e

instrument pan el and the two key heads will

have to be replaced (see replacing a kit).

The key has been lost:

→ Order a replacement key head u sing the num -

ber in the 2nd key head (eight alphanu meric

characters beginning w ith the letter F) or on

the label which is usually attached to th e keys

wh en the veh icle is delivered.

In this case, remem ber to order the m etal insert

for the new key head .

IMPORTANT: Do not touch the key head

electronic un it when t aking note of the num ber in

the key head . If the key head electronic un it has

been touched , the key mu st be replaced.

NOTE: If the nu mber of the key head cannot be

found (both keys and th e label have been lost),

the comp lete kit w ill have to be r eplaced

(passenger compartmen t connection un it BII, two

PLIPs, the instrum ent p anel and the injection

compu ter or the coded solenoid valve electronic

unit).

NOTE: the d oor locking system cannot operatewith th ree PLIPs (the instru ment p anel can only

generate tw o d ifferent rolling codes).

PROCEDURE FOR RESYNCHRONISING THE

REMOTE CONTROL UNIT

This procedu re will be used w hen an instrum ent

pan el or PLIP is replaced, or w hen the PLIP code isno longer w ithin the reception area of the instru -

men t panel (more than 1000 consecutive p resses

Special notes on PLIPs

If the key program ming p rocedur e (imm obiliser

function) has been carried out w ith the original

keys, the PLIPs will then be im med iately operatio-nal (un it correctly configured).

If the prog ramm ing procedu re (immobiliser fun c-

tion) has been carried out w ith a single original

key (using th e comm and G31*1*) only th e PLIP for

that key w ill be operational.

For the 2nd PLIP to w ork, it will have to be resyn-

chronised.

Check the operation of the PLIPs. After pr ogram -

ming (bargraph s 17 LH side an d RH side should ex-

tinguish).

REPLACING A KIT

(passenger compartment connection unit BII, two

key heads and the ins trument panel, when the

old security code is know n)

If a kit has to be r eplaced, it will be necessary to:

• Programme the codes for the two new PLIPs in-

to the p assenger compartment connection u nit

BII (supp lied un coded).

• Erase the old code memorised in the injection

compu ter or in the coded solenoid valve elec-

tronic un it using the p rocedu re for entering the

secur ity code (the code nu mber for the old k it

can be requested from the local assistance net-

wor k, for example DELTA Assistance for France,

NVSR for th e UK by fax only).

• Synchronise the PLIPs.

IMPORTANT : To erase the old code (memorised in

the injection comp uter or in the coded solenoid

valve electronic un it), the pr ocedu re described be-

low MUST be followed, in the or der given.

In effect, the injection comp uter code or coded so-

lenoid valve electronic unit code can on ly be era-

sed u sing the security code (with the number forthe old connection unit) if the new connection

un it fitted to the vehicle has been program med

with a code (wh ich is the case in the procedu re

which follows).

NOTE : If the security code introd uced into the

connection u nit is the same as the injection

compu ter or the coded solenoid valve, it will not

be decoded .

IMPORTANT:

When replacing the passenger compartment

connection uni t BII and the instrument panel, to

retain the vehicle mileage:

It is necessary to:

- With the ignition switched off,

- Disconnect and remove the instrument panel.- Replace and connect the new instrument pa-

nel.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR FITTING AN INJECTION

COMPUTER

IMPORTANT

ESPACE vehicles equipped with F9Q, L7X engines

have a special injection computer which only

functions if it is coded.

Consequently, you are strongly advised not to

carry out tests using a computer borrowed from

the store or on another vehicle to prevent coding

procedures w hich would make the computers

unusable as a result.

TEST

In injection fau lt find ing, it is possible to deter-

mine the condition of the compu ter.

Connect the XR25 to the vehicle and enter th e

code correspond ing to th e type of injection.

minated an d after entering *22, the term

"2def " shou ld ap pear on the XR25 display.

Direct injection d iesel vehicle

Bargraph 15 LH side (imm obiliser) should be il-

luminated an d after entering *15, the term

"2def " shou ld ap pear on the XR25 display.

• If the injection compu ter is coded and there is

no fault on the coded line.

Petrol vehicle:

Bargraph 2 RH side should be extinguished andafter entering *22, the term "bon" should ap -

pear on the XR25 disp lay (even if the computer

coding does not correspond to the vehicle).

Direct injection d iesel vehicle

Bargraph 15 LH side should be extinguished

and after entering *15, the term "bon" should

app ear on the XR25 display (even if the compu-

ter coding d oes not correspond to the vehicle).

REPLACING THE INJECTION COMPUTER (petrol

and direct injection diesel vehicles)

The injection computer is sup plied u ncoded . The

engine imm obiliser code m ust therefore be pro-grammed in when the comp uter is fitted to en-

able the vehicle to be started .

IMPORTANT: ESPACE vehicles equipped with

F9Q, L7X engines have a special injection compu-

ter which will only function if coded.

It is sufficient to carry ou t the following opera-

tions:

• Switch on the ignition for a few seconds using

the coded key.

• Switch off the ignition, the immobiliser func-

tion will be ensu red ap proximately 10 second s

afterward s (the red imm obiliser warning light

flashes).

• Check that the system is operating correctly.

Switch on th e ignition and check that th e red

warning light illuminates for 3 seconds then ex-

tingu ishes and tha t the vehicle starts.

NOTE:

It is possible to check starting p revention u sing

the XR25:

• Use fault finding fiche N° 68 and enter the code

D67 then G02* on the XR25.

• To simulate starting prevention, with the igni-

tion switched off , wait until the red imm obili-

ser wa rning light begins to flash slowly. Enter

command G04*, ignition still switched off

(Bargraph 9 LH side illuminates).

• Switch on the ignition, the red immobiliser

warn ing light flashes more rapidly and it

shou ld be imp ossible to start the vehicle.

IMMOBILISER

Passenger compartment connection unit (BII) 82DECODING PROCEDURE

This procedure w ill only work if the old security

code is known.

IMPORTANT:

The decoding procedu re involves replacing the

passenger compar tment connection u nit (BII) of

the vehicle with another passenger comp artment

connection u nit (BII) with a d ifferent code and en-

tering th e vehicle security code (security code

nu mber to be requ ested from the local assistance

network d epending on the country, for example

Delta Assis tance on 0800 05 15 15 for France,

NVSR for the UK by fax only), using the num ber in

the vehicle key head .

1. With the ign ition switched off, fit a new pas-

senger comp artmen t connection u nit (BII) co-

ded with a d ifferent num ber in place of the

passenger comp artmen t connection u nit (BII)

originally fitted to the veh icle (the p rocedur e

will not work w ith an uncoded p assenger

compartm ent connection u nit (BII) or one

wh ich is coded with the same nu mber as the

ignition).

2. Switch on the ignition, the red imm obiliser

war ning light flashes (rapid flashing).

3. Enter the vehicle secur ity code (num ber corre-

sponding to that on the original key).

4. After entering th e security code, the red war -

ning light flashes again. On the XR25, "2def"

shou ld be read on the display (in injection

fault find ing *22 or *15 depending on en-

gine). This indicates that the injection comp u-

ter has been decoded .

IMPORTANT:

When replacing a passenger compartment connection unitBII, the mileage is retained in the instrument panel memo-ry.

When connecting the new passenger compartmentconnection unit BII, the mileage in the instrument panelmemory will be displayed automatically in the passengercompartment connection unit.

Do not carry out fault finding using a substitute compo-nent from another vehicle as the higher mileage will bememorised and will be displayed on both vehicles.

SPECIAL NOTES FOR TESTING A CODED SOLENOID

VALVE

IMPORTANT

When testing an u ncoded solenoid valve electro-

nic unit borrow ed from the store (test par t), the

unit MUST NOT be fed d uring the op eration.

Switching the ignition on w ill send a coded signal

from the d ecoder u nit to the solenoid va lve elec-

tronic unit (the code is pr ogramm ed).

To avoid m emorising a code which could disable

the electronic un it of the coded solenoid valve af-

ter testing, the blue 26 track connection unitconnector must be disconnected. The coded signal

will therefore not be sent w hen th e ignition is

switched on (the solenoid valve electronic un it

will remain uncoded).

SYSTEM FAULT, ENGINE RUNNING

Petrol or direct injection diesel vehicle

If a fault in th e system is n oted by the injection

compu ter when th e engine is runn ing, the injec-

tion w arning light on the instrument p anel will

flash during d eceleration and at idle speed (speed

less than 1 500 rpm).

IMPORTANT: In this case, after repair, the fault

mem orised in the injection comp uter w ill have to

be erased by entering comman d m ode G0** using

the XR25 or by d isconnecting the battery (ap-

proximately 2 minutes), to allow the engine im-mobiliser system to op erate again.

NOTE: This fault m ay be shown by th e XR25 (in in-

jection fault find ing).

Conn ect the XR25 and enter the injection code.

The fault is indicated by bargrap h 2 RH side.

After entering *22, the term "1def " on th e XR25

d isplay indicates a coded line fault.

Direct injection diesel vehicles

The fault is indicated by bargrap h 15 LH side.

After entering *15, the term "1def " on th e XR25

d isplay indicates a coded line fault.

Diesel vehicle with coded solenoid valve

If a system fault is detected by the p assenger

compar tment connection u nit BII wh en the en-

gine is run ning, the red imm obiliser warn ing light

will illum inate un til the ignition is switched off.

IMPORTANT: In this case, after repair, the fault

memorised in the p assenger compartment

connection u nit BII will have to be erased by ente-

ring command mode G0** using th e XR25 or by

d isconnecting the battery (approximately 2 mi-

nutes), to allow the engine imm obiliser system to

operate again.

NOTE: This fault is show n by the XR25 and by the

fault finding for the passenger compartment

connection u nit BII (fiche N°68).

IMMOBILISER

Passenger compartment connection unit (BII) 82

After entering the 4th figure of the security code:

• If the code is correct, it is possible to start the

engine.

The red immobiliser war ning light shou ld illu-

minate for approximately 3 seconds , extinguish

for approximately 3 seconds and re-illuminate

for approximately 30 seconds .

This warn ing light illumination cycle will repeat

wh enever the ignition is switched on and as

long as the vehicle is un protected (up to ap-

proximately 10 minutes after the ign ition is

switched off). This serves to remind the custo-

mer th at his vehicle is no longer protected.

The vehicle will again be p rotected either:

- approximately 10 minutes after the ignition

is switched off (automatic starting),

- after the battery is disconnected.

• If the code is incorrect, the engine cannot be

started.

The red imm obiliser warn ing light flashes .

Switch off the ignition, then repeat th e proce-

du re for entering the code.

IMPORTANT: You m ay make th ree attempts to

enter the code. If, after the third attemp t, the

code is invalid, you mu st wait for app roximately

15 minu tes before making another attemp t.

When th is period has expired, switch the igni-

tion off and on again and 3 more attempts

may be made.

NOTE: This procedu re does not decode the in- jection compu ter or the coded solenoid valve

(depend ing on engine), it only authorises the

starting of th e vehicle.

REMINDER: The ignition m ust be tu rned off

and on again between two code tests.

Using the central door locking button

After determining the secur ity code num ber, carry

out the following operations:

1. With the ignition switched off, the red imm o-

biliser war ning light sh ould flash (slow flas-

hing).

2. Switch on the ignition, the injection w arning

light (petrol or direct injection diesel vehicle)

illum inates for app roximately 3 seconds then

extingu ishes whilst the red immobiliser war -

ning light flashes more rap idly.

3. Press and hold the central door locking but-

ton (it does not m atter which side), the redwarning light extinguishes.

4. Without releasing th e button, the w arning

light w ill flash very slowly (every 1.5 seconds)

to generate a coun ting sequence.

Count the nu mber of times the red w arning

light illuminates and release the but ton when

the value of the 1st figure of the security code

is reached .

5. Press the door locking bu tton again.

Count the nu mber of times the red w arning

light illum inates and r elease the key when

the value of the 2nd figure of the security

code is reached .

6. Repeat op eration "5" to enter the last tw o fi-

gur es for the security code.
