v What is Restorative Discipline? It is a unique approach to bullying prevention that is built on thebelief in the dignity of the human person. By fostering personal understanding and practice of character through timelessteaching on virtue, we can more fully experience personal growth, and in turn, integrate kindness in our interactions withthose around us. When harmful behavior occurs, restorativepractices enable all parties to repair relationships and makethings as right as possible.
v How Do You Know Restorative Discipline is Effective? Two significant outcomes in this work are:
1. Decrease anti-social behaviors2. Increase in virtue and character development
Many existing programs address misbehavior without exploringthe needs of the whole child for all parties involved in harmful behavior. Traditional discipline is generally punitive. Thestrategies provided in the RD training, once implemented, areevaluated by surveys and tracking behaviors to determine theeffectiveness in achieving its goals.
v What Preparations Do I Need to Make?Reflect with others in your school community. You will learnabout roles/responsibilities and review the checklist forimplementation. Invite staff and parents who share yourenthusiasm for maintaining a positive school climate and form aschool team. Register your school and plan to attend the upcoming Summer Institute for training. We recommend theInstitute for a minimum of three adults: an administrator and atleast two teachers. The most successful teams train their entirestaff.
v Why Should Our School Register a “Team?”Each team member can be trained for specific roles. This is acollaborative process that values every person’s contribution toa peaceful, safe, and productive learning environment. Parentscan be trained to assist with implementation at home, providingconsistency in the approach to solving conflicts and cultivatingcharacter and virtue.
