Welcome to Nanaimo, the Jewel of the West, the Sun-porch

of Canada and the Bathtub Racing Capital of the World, for the 50th Nanaimo Marine Festival and the 50th Great International World Champi-onship Bathtub Race!

The tubbers will be chal-lenging the Strait of Geor-gia northwest and around Maude Island before finish-ing in Nanaimo Harbour adjacent to the Frank Ney statue. Having the Quality Foods Start Line and Pepsi Finish Line in one location was an instant success last year, allowing Bathtub fans to see the exciting start and finish take place without leaving the park.

The 50th anniversary is the theme of this years’ Bathtub Sail Past on Wheels Fun Parade, sponsored by Shaw, on Saturday, July 23, starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Old City Quarter and ending at Maffeo Sutton Park.

There will be lots of fam-ily events in the park, with a Marine Festival Food Fair, the Harbourside Playdock, the Kiddies Karnival and the Mid-Island Co-op Arts & Craft Tent. The Marine Festival Free Community

Entertainment Stage at the Lions Pavilion has an assort-ment of music for every day of the festival.

On Friday, starting at 4 p.m. is King Neptune’s Bath-tub Weekend Launch Party featuring Trooper, Chilli-wack, The Kings, Valdy and Dark Horse. Also this year the beer gardens will oper-ate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

We have lots of action planned in Swy-a-lana lagoon for the weekend. For the first time the “Born on a Board" Wakeboard Winch Session demonstration will be making a splash Satur-day morning. The society is very excited about the return of the Paddle Wheel Bathtub Boats that Frank Ney popularized. Built in-house with high quality materials, the Paddlewheel-ers are sponsored by Royal Lepage Nanaimo Realty and will become a new annual component of the weekend festivities.

Don’t forget the Pancake Breakfast on Friday, Satur-day and Sunday 7-10 a.m. courtesy of Grill It. And don’t forget the downtown will also be a buzz on Thurs-day, Friday and Saturday

with activities at Diana Krall Plaza during the day and the farmers' market on Friday and the Downtown Bathtub Weekend Events organized by the DNBIA.

Saturday evening Van-couver Island’s largest and most spectacular fireworks display the Quality Foods Festival of Lights at 10 p.m. and the music is simulcast on The Wave 102.3 FM.

On Sunday, at 11 a.m. sharp, our signature event, the 50th annual Nanaimo to Nanaimo International World Championship Bath-tub Race begins. After the start, ongoing race informa-tion can be heard on the WAVE 102.3 FM and The WOLF 106.9 FM.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the dedicated volunteers who work year round, the Golden, Silver and Bronze Plug sponsors and corpo-rate members who make this festival possible. I also wish to recognize the tre-mendous commitment from the safety and communica-tions side of the race.

We thank the United States Navy, Canadian Navy, Cana-dian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Guard, Coast

Guard Auxiliary, BC Ambu-lance, Nanaimo Amateur Radio Club, Nanaimo Port Authority, Nanaimo Yacht Club, Nanaimo Power & Sail Squadron, RCMP Marine Division, Airspan Helicop-ters, Petro Value Products Canada Inc, B.C. Ferries, Protection Island Ferries, Harbour Ferries, Harbour Air Seaplanes and Seair Sea-planes.

Please join us July 20-23, 2017 when we celebrate the 51st World Championship Bathtub Race. Once again your attendance and partic-ipation will be our greatest reward.

4 Nanaimo Marine Festival - World Championship Bathtub Race 2016 1GATEWAY

I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 2016 Nanaimo World Champion-ship Bathtub Race.

This year, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Soci-ety proudly celebrates 50 years of Bathtub racing.

You don't want to miss this world class, internationally-recog-nized event!

The Quality Foods Festival of Lights fire-works with simulcast music is the largest fireworks display on Vancouver Island this year.

It's taking place at around 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. This event is also not to be missed.

Don’t forget to take in King Nep-tune’s Bathtub Weekend Launch party

featuring Trooper, Chilliwack, the Kings, Darkhorse and Valdy!

There is also planned the “Born on a Board” Wakeboard competition, and a special Bathtub Tug-of-War!

In addition, the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improve-ment Association will be holding a special Bathtub Days Street Fair, Shaw Sailpast on Wheels Fun Parade, and of course, the big event on Sunday morn-ing at 11 a.m.

For the second time, the finish line will be at Maffeo Sutton Park on Sunday, July 24 to welcome all tubbers ashore.

The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has arranged activities for all ages

and the City of Nanaimo encourages everyone to visit Maffeo Sutton Park during the festival. It is the premier festival park in the city, and with its beautiful waterfront trails, destina-tion playground and sprawling grassy areas, it is easy to see why it is one of Nanaimo's favourite public spaces.

A special thanks to the many com-mercial sponsors who step forward every year with a huge donation of staff, product and equipment, and lastly to the many volunteers, with-out whose help the Nanaimo Marine Festival Weekend simply would not be possible.

For our visitors, I trust that you will enjoy your time in Nanaimo and we encourage you to please come back again to enjoy our warm hospitality, great scenery and entertaining family events.

Sincerely,Mayor Bill McKay

To commemorate 50 years of Bathtub Racing in our fair land, this year the City of Nanaimo

designated the month of July as Marine Festival Month.

In addition to the World Champion-ship Bathtub Race and Bathtub Week-end (July 21-24), the Nanaimo Marine Festival celebrated the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival (July 8-10) and the Silly Boat Regatta (July 17) as well.

We kicked things off July 8-10 with the 14th Annual Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival. It was a weekend of fun for the entire family. Proceeds went to the Nanaimo Hospital Foundation and Nanaimo Community Hospice benefit-ing breast cancer patients.

On Sunday, July 17, we celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the Nanaimo Child Development Centre’s Silly Boat Regatta. Fifty teams and upwards of 10,000 spectators joined together for a spectacular day full of teamwork, camaraderie and good clean fun – all

in support of a great cause. Every year the centre raises upwards of $100,000 to run their programs supporting Nanaimo families.

Finally, July 21-24, Nanaimo cel-ebrates 50 years of Bathtub racing with the World Championship Bathtub Race and Bathtub Weekend.

The weekend gets going Friday with the Born on a Board Wakeboard com-petitions, a huge Molson’s Beer Gar-den and King Neptune's Bathtub Week-end Launch Party featuring the iconic Trooper along with guests Chilliwack, The Kings, Darkhorse and Valdy.

On Saturday, July 22, the action at

Maffeo Sutton Park and Swy-a-lana Lagoon continues with a full Kidz Zone, activities in the lagoon and wakeboard finals in the afternoon.

Bring the kids to the Paradise Island main stage for a free concert with the multi award-winning children's enter-tainers The Kerplunks. All weekend Maffeo Sutton Park and Swy-a-lana Lagoon are full of food trucks, vendors and Island artisans.

We wrap things up Sunday morning with the 50th World Championship Bathtub Race. The excitement in the harbour starts after 10 a.m. with the starting gun at 11 a.m. Fifty bathtub teams tackle a gruelling 36-mile course on the Sailish Sea in hopes of being the first to ring the bell. The course takes between one hour and several hours to complete and both start and finish line are in front of the park.

We hope to see you down at Maffeo Sutton and Swy-A-Lana for some Bath-tub Weekend fun.

This year, the 50th annual Great International World Champion-ship Bathtub Race will begin

in Nanaimo Harbour near Mafeo Sut-ton Park and take a circuitous route past Gallows Point, around Entrance Island, around Maude Island, around Five Fingers Island and Gallows Point and back to the finish line in Nanaimo Harbour.

Each year about 50 tubs take part in some thrilling and dangerous racing. To keep the tubs and the drivers safe, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has an extensive safety and communi-cations program. Each year we meet well in advance of the race, assess the conditions and ensure a plan is in place for a safe race.

The organizations included in the race activities include City of Nanaimo, the Canadian Coast Guard,

the Coast Guard Auxilliary, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Res-cue, the Nanaimo Port Authority, the RCMP, St. John Ambulance, Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association and CFMETR. To coordinate all this activ-ity requires a great deal of communi-cation.

All the tubs must be accompanied by an escort boat, to ensure the tub driver’s safety. Each escort vessel must have a Marine VHF radio to com-municate with Bathtub Control and the coast guard. In addition, a sepa-rate Bathtub control station is set up on Gabriola Island to ensure communi-cations with escort vessels all the way to the mouth of Nanoose Bay.

Each tub must also pass various checkpoints, including Gallows Point, Entrance Island, Checkpoint Three (a CFMETR vessel moored just north of Maud Island), Checkpoint Four (just east of Imperieuse Rock), Checkpoint

Five (Five Fingers), and the Big Tub at Gallows Point before entering the harbour.

tion, operate from each checkpoint. The spotters and radio operators or “hams” are all volunteers who bring their own equipment for the task. The “hams” communicate through the club UHF repeater at Lost Lake, to provide links over the entire race course.

All these activities are linked to Bathtub Control at the Coast Bastion Hotel. There, four or five radio opera-tors monitor Marine VHF channels and stay in contact with escort ves-sels. It is vital that an escort vessel

notifies Bathtub Control when a tub has dropped out of the race so that extensive searches are not undertaken for tubs not accounted for.

As each tub and escort passes a checkpoint, the “hams” notify Bathtub Control that the pair has passed that particular checkpoint so that bathtub trackers can update the status board that shows the location of every tub. The trackers at Bathtub Control ensure that they know when each tub has reached each checkpoint.

This communications system, which

connects all the participants in the race, ensures that all the tubbers get back to the beach safely, and that we minimize the risks to the tubbers and everyone else on the water. The Coast Guard, RCMP, RCM SAR, Navy and Harbour Patrol vessels can all com-municate with Bathtub Control to deal with problems on the water. The race simply couldn't happen without it.

Bob Smits is communications and safety director for the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society.

Vancouver Island’s largest fireworks show with music will be held in Nanaimo Harbour during this year’s

Nanaimo Marine Festival. The show starts at about 10 p.m. on Satur-

day, July 23. The fireworks are set off from the Nanaimo

Harbour and can be seen from both the land and the water. Hundreds of people on boats anchor in the harbour to watch.

Quality Foods has sponsored the light show for many years and they are back again this year. The post-explosion bang is huge, but for an extra sonic contribution, the Wave 102.3 FM will broadcast a musical simulcast. The radio station will have a vehicle and speakers on site for the thousands who gather at Swy-a-lana Lagoon, or find your favourite vantage spot and turn on your radio.

The first sanctioned race was held in 1979 after a request from The Kelowna Regatta to expand their

water activities. The Tubbers who had participated in The Great Race were invited to attend. The Daily News World Cup Trophy was created with points being earned for each race. The first place finisher receives 50 points, then decreasing by two points and 10 points for not finishing. At present, Tubbers are allowed to drop points from one race so that they are not penalized if unable to attend.

The mandate of The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society is to publicize the sport of Bathtub Racing so as to encourage more participants. Races are held at various locations through-out British Columbia and Washington State. Races have taken place as far

away as Sylvan Lake, Alberta. The Oak Bay Tea Party Race in Victoria has traditionally been our first race of the season; they will celebrate their 47th race this year. We always complete the season in Bremerton, Washington on the Labour Day weekend.

The majority of these races are cir-cuit races, the entire circuitsbeing visible for spectators. Port Moody was one of our longest running races, a distance race running up Indian Arm and a ‘warm up’ for The Great Race. Presently, there are ten races in six locations during the summer months.

In the past there have been as many as 13 races taking place in one year. Our website can be referred to for info about when and where current races are being held.

Sanctioned racing can be a family affair, with parents helping their chil-dren and other members of the family working as pit crew or helping to orga-nize the race.

It is an opportunity to learn to repair motors and fiberglass tubs. It is also a time for families and teams to social-ize with each other and to share expe-riences and knowledge.

Santioned racing has it's rewards too. The Tubbers race for points and at the end of the season the winners in each class are presented with the Nanaimo Daily News World Champion-ship trophies.

BY BILL THORNEYCROFT

I FIRST got involved around bathtub racing 30 years ago when I moved back from Australia.

I found myself bored and searching for an interest to fill my spare time. That's when it all started. Over the years I met and made lifetime friends. My wife Lori and I travelled to many races all over the province during the summers and our kids grew up loving the races and growing up with other tubbers children. My family were my pit crew and my biggest supporters.

In the beginning I was a real novice and through the years learned more and more about building my boats and acquired more skill as the years went on. I learned the value of being competitive. I also learned to stay true

to myself and run a good race always respecting the rules as laid out by the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society and respecting the other tubbers.

With three world cups, one Com-monwealth Games win and many seconds and thirds to my name, this is the only way to go fast and not get a speeding ticket. I also had many flips, engine breakdowns, aches and pains from harsh conditions, an oldest tub-ber award and a couple of plugs for last to finish. I also was awarded the most sportsmanship awards which meant the most to me.

Many thanks to the Bathtub society for their many years of dedication and fun.

Bill Thorneycroft competes in Tub 93 and is from Cloverdale, B.C.

Over the years, many materials have been used to construct a racing bath-tub.

Early tub hulls were predominantly wood with a moulded fibreglass tub attached. There have also been some very innovative designs built of alumi-num and other metals.

As bathtub boat technology advanced, fibreglass has become the material of choice for almost all tub-bers. With its ease of being formed into any shape, inherent strength, lightness and relatively low cost, it has dominated the scene when it come to building a competitive racing tub.

With this in mind, here are a few ideas and hits that will get you on your way to ruling the waves on the outside of your bathtub.

Whenever building your own tub, read the rules over several times before, during and after your build to ensure you're conforming to the guide-lines of the race. CONSTRUCTION OF THE TUBUsing an old bathtub, make a fibre-glass copy by laying a combination of PVA release, E-glass mat material and E-glass cloth material to the inside of the tub.

Be sure to wet out each layer with resin and use a roller to remove air bubbles and wrinkles. Reinforce criti-cal areas such as the rear of the tub where the transom will attach and the rim where your hand will hold onto, with more glass material. After the resin has set, pull the copy out of the old tub. If it is hard to release, use compressed air or water to help loosen the fiberglass part. If you used the PVA release properly, it should come out with just little water to dis-solve the PVA.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE HULLThe tub hull can be made by several different methods. By far the easiest is to get on the phone and borrow one of the many molds lying in backyards around Nanaimo.

2 BETTER COMMUNITY THROUGH BETTER BUSINESS

For the more industrious individual, designing your own mold is the answer.

Wood and filler are used to develop the shape. After you have the mold, laying up the hull uses the same mate-rials and techniques as the tub itself.

Remember to cover all corners and make sure no air bubbles are present to prevent weakness in the structure. After the mold is built or procured, the same layup process as the Tub portion ensues. TRANSOM DESIGNTransoms can be made out of wood, foam, aluminum or other materials. Wood and fibreglass are the easiest to work with. Engine heights vary between 15 and 25 inches, depending on propeller design, so remember it is easier to reduce the height than add it on later.

This is a very critical area. Be sure that it is well built and strong. Quar-ter-inch plywood uprights and two pieces of laminated half-inch plywood engine supports covered in mat fibre-glass work well and are easy to build.

GLUING IT ALL TOGETHERAfter making the tub and hull, join together using fibreglass strips, mak-ing sure it is well reinforced.

Eighth-inch door skin works well for side supports. Remember to leave six inches of the tub exposed. Alignment is critical for handling, so measure it, don’t trust your eyes.

Use at least three layers of mat when attaching the transom to the back of the tub. An engine 300 feet under water won’t win races, not to mention the hole in the back of your craft. There must be enough floatation to support the complete craft in an upset: a minimum of three cubic feet.

Most builders rely on attached foam or sealed air chambers. Use which-ever suits your design, but be sure there is enough. Although fibreglass has been the mainstay of tub building for many years, the introduction of the 350 pound maximum weight rule has opened the way for the handyman carpenter or fabricator to get his or her feet wet in the great sport of bath-tub racing again.

FIBREGLASS HANDLING HINTS

Fumes and dust are toxic and irritating so work in a well ventilated area and wear a dust mask when grinding.

All molds must be clean and smooth. Wax and PVA should be applied first to prevent fiberglass stick to molds.

Grind all attaching points and rough areas to facilitate pieces staying together and prevent cutting crew and/or driver when handling the tub.

Get a glass roller. You’ll be lost without it.

Acetone is used for cleaning. Make sure you have lots on hand for brushes, rollers and yourself.

Using gelcoat before laying glass in molds prevents pinholes and adds to smoothness of finished pieces.

If in doubt, the friendly staff at Industrial Plastics in Nanaimo can always answer questions and supply materials and tools.
