3GATEWAY

Welcome to Nanaimo, B.C., the Jewel of the West, the Sun-porch of Canada and the

Bathtub Racing Capital of the World, for the 49th annual Nanaimo Marine Festival and the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race.

Once again, the tubbers will be challenging the Strait of Georgia, but with a new twist. Instead of the Winchelseas, they’ll be heading northwest to and around Maude Island before the home stretch. Also this year, for the rst time ever, the race will be nishing in Nanaimo Harbour adjacent to the Frank Ney statue. Having the “Great Race” start and nish in the one location will allow people to see both the exciting events take place without having to leave the park.

is year the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society (LNBS), and the Nanaimo Marine Festival, are saluting the 50th Anniversary of the “Joint use of the Test Ranges” at CFMETR (Canadian Forces Maritime Experimental Test Range) by the Canadian and United States navies. e salute will also be the theme for this year’s Bathtub Sail Past on Wheels Fun Parade.

On Sunday, our signature event of the Marine Festival, the 49th

annual Nanaimo to Nanaimo Great International World Championship Bathtub Race begins in Nanaimo harbour. Follow all the coverage from the Quality Foods Start Line in Ma eo Sutton Park and Nanaimo harbour as well as ongoing Great Race coverage and the Pepsi Finish Line now at Ma eo Sutton Park. Ongoing race information can be heard on the Nanaimo Bathtub Race and Marine Festival radio stations e WAVE 102.3 FM and e WOLF 106.9 FM. After the tubs leave the harbour there will still be lots of activities in the park.

At this time I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the dedicated volunteers – and we would love to have more – with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society who work year-round to produce this festival and event. I also wish to acknowledge all the Golden Plug, Silver Plug and Bronze Plug sponsors, and corporate members who make this festival possible each year. We truly value your relationship and look forward to your continuing support in the coming years. I also wish to recognize the tremendous commitment made by all the individuals participating each year in the Safety and Communications side of the race. Without their assistance

we could not possibly put on a race of this magnitude as safely as we do.

We thank the United States Navy, Canadian Navy, Canadian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, BC Ambulance, Nanaimo Amateur Radio Club, Nanaimo Port Authority, Nanaimo Yacht Club, Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadron, RCMP Marine Division, Airspan Helicopters, Petro Value Products Canada Inc., BC Ferries, Protection Island Ferries, Harbour Ferries, Harbour Air Seaplanes, SeaAir Seaplanes and the many volunteers who are always there when needed.

Please come back and join us in Nanaimo from July 21-24, 2016, when we will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Great Race and the Nanaimo Marine Festival. Once again, your attendance and participation will be our greatest reward.

4 Nanaimo Marine Festival - World Championship Bathtub Race 20154 BETTER COMMUNITY THROUGH BETTER BUSINESS

I am pleased to welcome everyone to the 2015 Nanaimo-to-Nanaimo World Championship Bathtub

Race. Join us as we celebrate our 49th annual world-famous race. is year the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society proudly salutes the 50th Anniversary of the Joint use of Test Ranges by the Canadian and American Navies.

e Quality Foods Festival of Lights reworks with simulcast music is the largest reworks display on Vancouver Island this year. It's taking place at around 10pm on Saturday, July 25, 2015. is event is not to be missed.

For the rst time, the Finish Line will be at Ma eo Sutton Park on Sunday, July 26th to welcome all tubbers ashore. e Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has arranged activities for all

ages: displays, a beer garden, concerts and food services at the park for the entire weekend. e City of Nanaimo encourages everyone to visit Ma eo Sutton Park during the festival. It is the premier festival park in the city, and with its beautiful waterfront trails, destination playground and sprawling grassy areas, it is easy to see why it is one of Nanaimo's favourite public spaces.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Canadian Navy, the United States Navy, the Nanaimo Port Authority, the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, the Nanaimo Marine Search and Rescue volunteers, the RCMP (Nanaimo Detachment and Marine Division) and all the other safety and communications personnel who

faithfully assist every year. Your help and dedication is truly appreciated. A special thanks to the many commercial sponsors who step forward every year with a huge donation of sta , product and equipment, and lastly to the many volunteers, without whose help the Nanaimo Marine Festival Weekend simply would not be possible.

For our visitors, I trust that you will enjoy your time in Nanaimo and we encourage you to please come back again to enjoy our warm hospitality, great scenery and entertaining family events.

6 BETTER COMMUNITY THROUGH BETTER BUSINESS

After 48 years, the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race

will nish where it starts for the rst time. e Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society announced in April that the Great Race Finish Line for this year and future years will be at Maeo Sutton Park in downtown Nanaimo.

“ere are so many advantages to having the race start and nish in the same spot,” says Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society Commodore Bill McGuire. McGuire has been involved with the LNBS since it was formed in

1967. “Spectators don’t have to move from Maeo Sutton Park to Departure Bay to enjoy the nish line antics anymore,” said McGuire. “Tubbers will, in fact, ring the bell right underneath the Frank Ney statue, an iconic symbol of Nanaimo’s former mayor who was largely responsible for inventing this crazy sport.”

e LNBS is looking forward to building on the successes of the past, while establishing new ones through community partnerships with the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, including the Old City Quarter, e City of Nanaimo, e Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce and the Nanaimo Port Authority, plus many others.

e new course is 32.13nm, virtually

the same distance as the previous course. at’s equal to 59.5 kilometers, or 37 miles.

“e race is actually going to be a more challenging one for our tubbers,” McGuire says. “e roughest part of the entire course has always been Entrance Island and this new route has tighter turns and more activity in that area.”

e 2015 Great International World Championship Bathtub Race and Nanaimo Marine Festival has been a agship event for residents and visitors to the Harbour City for the past 48 years.

A new nish line will allow for an exciting festival nish for spectators and tubbers and will set the stage for another 50 years of bathtubbing.

Great Race begins and ends in same spotTubs will race for the bell at the foot of Frank Ney's

waterfront statue

Communications vital to tubbers’ safetyCommunications vital to tubbersBY BOB SMITS

is year, the 49th annual Great International World Championship Bathtub Race will begin in Nanaimo harbour near Ma eo Sutton Park, and take a circuitous route past Gallows Point, around Entrance Island, around Maud Island, around Five Fingers Island and Gallows Point and back to the nish line in Nanaimo Harbour.

Each year about 50 tubs take part in some thrilling and dangerous racing. To keep the tubs and the drivers safe, the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society has an extensive safety and communications program. Each year we meet well in advance of the race, assess the conditions and ensure a plan is in place for a safe race.

e organizations included in the race activities include City of Nanaimo, Canadian Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxilliary, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, Nanaimo Port Authority, Nanaimo RCMP, St. John Ambulance, Nanaimo Amateur Radio

Association and CFMETR. To coordinate all this activity requires a great deal of communication.

All the tubs must be accompanied by an escort boat, to ensure the tub driver's safety. Each escort vessel must have a Marine VHF radio to communicate with Bathtub Control and the Coast Guard. In addition, a separate Bathtub Control station is set up on Gabriola Island to ensure communications with escort vessels all the way to the mouth of Nanoose Bay. Each tub must also pass various checkpoints, including Gallows Point, Entrance Island, Checkpoint ree (a CFMETR vessel moored just north of Maud Island), Checkpoint Four (just east of Imperieuse Rock), Checkpoint Five (Five Fingers), and the Big Tub at Gallows Point before entering the harbour.

Spotters and radio operators from the Nanaimo Amateur Radio Association

operate from each checkpoint. e spotters and radio operators, or “hams,” are all volunteers who bring their own equipment for the task. e “hams” communicate through the club UHF repeater at Lost Lake to provide links over the entire race course.

All these activities are linked to Bathtub Control at the Coast Bastion Hotel. ere, four or ve radio operators monitor Marine VHF channels and stay in contact with escort vessels. It is vital that an escort vessel noties Bathtub Control when a tub has dropped out of the race so that extensive searches are

not undertaken for tubs not accounted for. As each tub and escort passes a checkpoint, the “hams” notify Bathtub Control that the pair has passed that particular checkpoint so that bathtub trackers can update the status board that shows the location of every tub. e trackers at Bathtub Control ensure that they know when each tub has reached each checkpoint.

is communications system, which connects all the participants in the race, ensures that all the tubbers get back to the beach safely and that we minimize the risks to the tubbers and everyone else on the water. e Coast Guard, RCMP, RCM SAR, navy and harbour patrol vessels can all communicate with Bathtub Control to deal with problems on the water. e race simply couldn't happen without it.

Bob Smits is communications and safety director for the Bathtub society.

THE FIRST RACE was held in 1967 as a Centennial project. It was supposed to be a one time event but we are now coming up to the 50th.

SIX-HORSEPOWER outboard engines were used until the late ’70s when engine size went up to 7.5hp. In 1991, because of the di culty of purchasing the 7.5hp engine it was changed to maximum eight hp.

A PARADE is held the day before the race as well as reworks with music in the evening.

THE BATHTUB coins have been minted since 1969 and are the longest running trade dollar in Canada. Each year they depict the current Salute.

AN OFFICIAL SOUVENIR

program has been produced each year since 1980. is year, it's published by the Nanaimo News Bulletin.

IN 1967, there was only one class, then in 1991 it was changed to Stock and Modi ed. Stock being an outboard as it comes from the manufacturer and Modi ed meant you could

run a racing propeller. In 2007 a third class was added – Super Modi ed.

IN 1980, the sanctioned racing circuit started and some years there were as many as 13 races in one year at various locations.

IN 1987, a minimum weight rule was introduced, e Tub, motor, pilot and all

equipment must weigh at least 350lbs.

1989 WAS the roughest race on record and only six Tubs nished.

IN 1997, the race changed from going to Vancouver to nishing in Departure Bay.2003 was the roughest race on the new course and only 16 out of 41 Tubs nished.

Nanaimo's harbour was the scene of a bathtub racing extravaganza for the rst Bathtub Race

in 1967, the year of Canada’s 100th birthday.

As the City of Nanaimo's “centennial event,” more than 200 tubbers in every type of watercraft imaginable entered the fun competition and amazingly, 47 completed the 36-mile course to Vancouver's Fisherman's Cove.

e race continued crossing the Strait of Georgia (nishing at Kitsilano Beach) until 1996. In 1997, the nish line was changed to Departure Bay in Nanaimo covering a very grueling course that starts in Nanaimo Harbour, goes around Entrance Island, northwest to Winchelsea Islands, around a naval ship, past Schooner Cove and then back to

Departure Bay beach. In the early days, it was indeed a

challenge to just get past the starting line in the choppy confusion caused by an extra 785 small and large observation and escort boats in Nanaimo Harbour.

From the confusion of the rst race in 1967, the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race and four-day Marine Festival has evolved.

Where once a select band of tubbers were the highlight they now share the spotlight with many other land and

water events.is year, for the rst time, the

course will be altered slightly so that all bathtubs end up in downtown Nanaimo, at the base of the Frank Ney statue in Maeo Sutton Park.

e length of the course remains unchanged – the route itself is just modied slightly. is historic change makes sense for many reasons and will help ensure the sustainability of this wacky sport and the Marine Festival that has grown around it.

is crazy, quirky sport is becoming a yearly tradition on the other side of the world, too – in an area called the Bay of Islands on New Zealand's North Island, just three hours north of Auckland.

e rst race took place May 24, 2014 with a 1,200-strong spectator crowd turning up to enjoy the event and the festivities. In 2014 John Booker won the race and ew courtesy of Air New Zealand to race in Nanaimo's International World Championship Bathtub Race.

Jamie Garcia supplied him with a

boat and o he went. He didn't make the podium in Canada but did nish in the top 10 for his class.

e winner of the second annual Bay of Islands Bathtub Racing Classic is John Fagan and he'll be ying up to Canada to check out how we do it, courtesy of Air New Zealand again.

e course that the New Zealanders race isn't quite on the same level as our 50-km route in the open water, but it's still great to see this crazy sport popping up in another part of the world and gaining interest in other communities.

Bathtub racing catches on in New Zealand The mandate of The Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub

The Tubbers race for points and at the end of the season the winners in each class are presented with the Nanaimo Daily News World Championship trophies. For information, please visit www.bathtubbing.com.

NYLA Fresh Thread has been voted by our local community through Best of the city in the Nanaimo News Bulletin, #1 Destination for Menswear! They would like to thank the community for all the support in making this become a reality. Without the community coming together and making the trip to down town Nanaimo to check out the store, they wouldn’t have realized this goal so soon after opening.

“Every day we have new guests coming through to check out our store, looking for something specific and filling that need.

The biggest compliment to us, is the repeat business, returning and bringing their friends and family. I never thought when I opened our doors late last summer that we would be accepted so quickly into the community with open arms.”

- Leon Drzewiecki, Owner Principal, NYLA Fresh Thread Inc.

Owner Leon is born and raised in Nanaimo and over the last few years has seen the lack of locally owned menswear. He personally hand crafted a man-driven environment that gives his clientele a comfortable place to shop for trusted brands with unwavering quality. With love of the rich history of Nanaimo, every month Leon releases a new limited edition Heritage Nanaimo t-shirt. These t-shirts are meant to peek interest, inspire, and invoke emotion over Nanaimo’s colorful past. He spends countless hours working with the Nanaimo archives, museums and private images, looking for images that make Nanaimo unique. With eight Heritage Nanaimo t-shirts to choose from, in men’s and ladies sizes, you’ll be sure to find the one that suites your style and personality.

Featured Heritage Nanaimo T-Shirt is of Black Frank in a homemade bicycle bathtub paddle boat, dressed in his full pirate costume, in Nanaimo’s Newcastle Island channel, on bathtub weekend 1980. This picture is from the Ney family archives.

Frank James Ney, (Black Frank) (May 12, 1918 – November 24, 1992) was the mayor of Nanaimo, British Columbia, serving for twenty-one years. He was known for his outgoing personality, his habit of attending civic events and dressing up like a pirate for the appearances, and playing a central role in initiating the bathtub races across Georgia Strait from Nanaimo to Vancouver.

“Vancouver Island’s newest store for men of all ages is NYLA Fresh Thread. Fresh Classic and Casual Menswear. Thanks for your continued support!”

- Leon Drzewiecki, Owner Principal, NYLA Fresh Thread Inc.
