PARADE

Year after year one of British Columbians’ favourite May Long Weekend events takes place: the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade. Don’t miss it this year for the Cloverdale Rodeo’s 70th anniversary on Saturday, May 21 at 10:00 am between Highway 10 and 60th Avenue.

WORLD FREESTYLE SKATEBOARDING ROUND UP Come watch top professional and amateur freestyle skateboarders from all over the world compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. This free event takes place inside the Cloverdale Curling Rink within the Cloverdale Fairgrounds and is a must-see.

CONE ZONE Located outside the Kidz Zone, youth can drive go-karts around an obstacle fi lled track; traffi c markings, hazards and other drivers help these drivers gain valuable self-driving knowledge.

MUTTON BUSTIN’ Tiny tots get their chance to become Rodeo superstars in the exciting Mutton Bustin’ event. In true rodeo fashion, children ride and race sheep as the crowd cheers them on and your child could be a part of the show!

BOOTS & BUCKLES – BC COUNTRY MUSIC SALOONFor the second year, the BC Music Association will have their impressive pavilion set up by the Longhorn Saloon. This pavilion will host a meet and greet with over 50 BCCMA Artists as they perform during the long weekend. The outside show case stage will provide live Country Music greetings to the Country Fair attendees as they arrive at the South Gate entrance all throughout the day. This pavilion is open to all ages and is free until 8 pm when it will transform into “Boots and Buckles”, a live music dance hall showcasing outstanding lighting and sound productions. This is a 19+ event.

CLOVERDALE ✶ 22 ✶ RODEO 2016

The Cloverdale Rodeo is offering the second largest payout and is one of the most popular rodeos on the professional tour. This makes it no surprise that the Rodeo draws in the top athletes in the sport today. Featuring saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, as well as ladies barrel racing, the Cloverdale Rodeo is one of the most exciting and fastest paced in the pro rodeo world. These 4 events are very unique and have their own rules, techniques and methods of scoring.

In addition to all the other factors that come into play, the cowboy’s performance as well as the animals determines a winning score. In the roughstock events (bareback, saddle bronc and bull riding) the horse or bull accounts for half the score. Barrel racing contestants depend on their horses to assist them in a good run.

Like any sport, it is to the spectator’s advantage to recognize what judges are looking for in any ride or run.

Saddle Bronc Riding Timing and control are the defi nitive factors looked at when scoring this event. A rider who synchronizes his spurring action with the animal’s bucking effort will receive a high score. Other factors considered in the scoring are the cowboy’s control throughout the ride; the length of his spurring stroke and the length of the ride – a perfect rodeo ride is eight seconds. Model spurring action begins with the rider’s feet far forward on the bronc’s point of shoulder sweeping to the back of the saddle, or “cantle”, as the horse bucks. The rider then snaps his feet back to the horses neck a split second before the animal’s front feet hi the ground. A bronc rider will be disqualifi ed if he touches the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand, if either foot slips out of a stirrup or if he drops the bronc rein.

Bull Riding Bull riders are not required to spur. Staying aboard a wildly kicking bull that weigh a ton or more is usually enough to

impress the judges. Offi cials watch for bull riders to remain over the middle of the bull without tilting or leaning back. In addition to a good body position, other factors considered in scoring are use of the free arm and spurring action. Although not required, spurring will add points to a rider’s score. As in all the roughstock events, half of the score in bull riding is determined by the contestant’s performance and the other half is based on the animal’s efforts. A bull rider will be disqualifi ed for touching the animal, himself or his equipment with his free hand. Like other roughstock events, the perfect ride is eight seconds.

Bareback Riding A bareback rigging, made of leather and rawhide and roughly resembling a suitcase handle, is the cowboy’s grip during his eight-second ride and the only equipment allowed in bareback riding. The rider must hold on with only one hand; he will be disqualifi ed if he touches his equipment, himself or the animal with his free hand at any time during the ride. A bareback rider must begin with his feet above the break of the horses shoulder. This is called a “mark out”, and failure to have the feet in proper position at the beginning of the ride results in disqualifi cation. The rider is judged on his control during the ride and on his spurring technique. The horse’s performance also accounts for half the total score.

Barrel Racing Barrel racing is pure speed – the fastest time wins. Times are so close that only an electronic eye timer measuring to the hundredths of a second can record the differences. The horse and rider start in an alleyway, gaining momentum as they approach the fi rst of the three barrels, placed in a cloverleaf pattern, that they will circle. A rider may touch or even tip a barrel, but a fi ve-second penalty is added is the barrel is knocked over. A barrel racer looks for a supple, athletic horse that can make turns around the barrels without pausing or stopping.
