Pollinator Parks in the cityLocated at City Hall Park Gardens,
4914 - 48 Ave., Red Deer
Pollinator Parks are areas that promote and preserve
the natural habitat of pollinators. The City has
selected four parks as Pollinator Parks: City Hall, Snell
Gardens, Maskepetoon Park, and Bower Ponds.
A demonstration pollinator garden and interpretive
signs have been installed at Bower Ponds to teach
residents about the role pollinators play in our
ecosystem and what people can do to enhance their
own yards and gardens to include pollinator habitat
and food sources. The City Hall park has installed
markers to indicate the gardens and a pollinator hotel
for insects to nest.

It was here in Red Deer in 1924 that Alberta’s first federal migratory bird sanctuary was established on almost 118 hectares of protected land within the city limits. Today there are more than 100 kilometres of trails inside the city and almost 3,000 kilometres more in the region connecting communities and people with nature.

6 Insider’s Guide to Red Deer and Beyond
KERRY WOOD NATURE CENTRE
All Natural AdventuresIt was a sunny Saturday afternoon and my son and I buckled up our rented snowshoes and headed out into the woods behind Kerry Wood Nature Centre. Always a favourite family stop, we have spent many fun hours visiting the small animals and displays in the nature centre and exploring the trails and the woodland of Waskasoo Park in every season. In winter we liked pretending we were trappers searching for animal tracks. In spring or summer we’d hide in the bird blind and be naturalists counting the different kinds of birds we saw in the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. Regardless of the season, it never feels like you are in the middle of a city when you visit this place.
Nature PlaygroundsChildren love walking along the trails in the sanctuary, participating in the naturalist programs at the nature centre and just being outdoors, but two new all-season outdoor nature playgrounds have made Kerry Wood Nature Centre even more fun. At the Nova Chemicals Imagination Grove, kids can climb on a giant spider web, slip inside a bear cave made from stone, walk on logs and learn about nature in an outdoor classroom. The Kiwanis Harmony Garden is an accessible interactive outdoor music park with wood and metal percussion instruments that allow children to share the joy of making musical sounds outside in nature.
Adventures for All Ages In Every Season
Whether you participate in a naturalist-led river rafting trip in the summer, join a guided snowshoe tour in winter or just explore on your own, Kerry Wood Nature Centre and Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary are a treat to tour in every season. Whatever your age, discover the power of nature to soothe your soul.
Alberta’s First Federal Migratory Bird SanctuaryRed Deer region has a very active group of local naturalists that first became organized in 1906. Through their efforts, the generosity of the J.J. Gaetz family who originally owned the land, 118 hectares of land was protected and in 1924 this land became Alberta’s first federal migratory bird sanctuary.
Despite its protected designation, there were many threats to the survival of the bird sanctuary over the years and Kerry Wood, a noted naturalist and writer, was its greatest champion, constantly working with other local naturalists to maintain and enhance the sanctuary. When the City built a nature centre at the edge the sanctuary, it was fitting that it be named Kerry Wood Nature Centre.

Michener Aquatic Centre
Water and fun are the abundant at the Michener Aquatic Centre (51A Street & 38 Ave). The facility boasts a six-lane, 25 metre indoor pool, a therapy/play pool, a separate dive tank with one and three metre diving boards. Central Alberta Communities
Central Alberta has agriculture at its backbone and many of the over 9,100 farms surrounding the city of Red Deer are found in Red County. Visitors are welcomed at many area farms where you can get eggs, honey, vegetables, fruits, meat, preserves, and cheese right from the farm gate or at a farmers’ market. Great agritourism attractions like U-Pick farms, corn mazes, sunflower mazes, greenhouses, antique shops and museums dot the peaceful countryside.
On a country drive you’ll discover rural attractions, historical sites, enjoy festivals and special events, and visit local farms to meet the producers and purchase food right from the farm gate. The list of participating producers and attractions is big, so you’ll want to download a map before you head out. countrydrive.ca
Red Deer County
Alberta’s largest non-mountain downhill ski resort is ten minutes east of The City of Red Deer in Red Deer County. There’s a snow tubing park, a terrain park and plenty of great runs to explore.
Whether you enjoy boating, fishing, watersports or swimming, there’s a lake in Red Deer County that perfectly suits your purpose. The three major recreational lakes in Red Deer County are Pine Lake, Sylvan Lake and Gleniffer Reservoir.
Did you know that the “Shakespeare of Iceland” was an Alberta homesteader? Unable to sleep at nights, Stephan G. Stephansson wrote poetry in his native tongue and became famous in his homeland. Today you can visit his original homestead along the Scandinavian Trail. Other wonderful attractions include the Danish Canadian National Museum, the Dickson Store Museum, Historic Markerville and the Markerville Creamery. scandinaviantrail.ca
There is a diverse range of accommodation options within Red Deer County. Relax at a lakeside resort, explore the outdoors at a campsite or cabin, or unwind at a lovely country B&B.

Music soothes the human soul and ignites our passions and creativity. It is a vehicle of expression and at its very best, it is an art form. Plato wrote, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” We celebrate music in all its forms. Red Deer has an enthusiastic community band society and there are five adult community concert bands that are active from September through May playing everything from classical to jazz-rock, funk, and Latin music.
